Project: General Lee Miss behaving, Question about jackplate

Hey guys over the winter months we are beginning a project speed boat using our 16' bow rider. The boat is a 1987 Edson bow rider. We have aquired a 1989 150 hp evinrude outboard off of a bass boat for it and are creating all the proper reinforcements for the transom etc by welding up some supports etc. My question to you guys is what is the proper jackplate size needed for our project? We are unsure as to the proper size we figured a 5" but was wondering what you guys may suggest. I have attached a picture of what the boat looks like to give you an idea. Any help is needed

Why do you think you need a jackplate?

to better stabilize my boat and allow me to adjust my motor height to get the perfect setup for top speed

Is it just me or does that hull look to have a horrendous hook in it from the rollers? Also, what's the max HP that boat is rated for?

Well....if you go with a jack plate you have to make sure you have the cable length (steering etc) to accommodate safe operation.

Just my opinion but mounting properly is half the battle and every motor has adjustments....... there will be no extra stability offered from a jack plate but it will stress the transom and make the stern ride lower from the weight and leverage of the larger outboard.

Re: Project: General Lee Miss behaving, Question about jackplate

well the max hp my boats rated for is 75 but as I stated I am a welder so I am fabing a 1/4 steel plate/supports to totally reinforce the transom for this project, it is not going to be an everyday use boat only special occasions etc so please don't jump down my neck about it being highly over powered I already know this etc. but my concern was a jackplate seems to offer extra adjustments so i was wondering if this a good idea or bad as this will be my first really project boat, and the hull does not have a hook from the rollers she is solid picture doesn't show my boat well.

check this site out

i have no experience here but would think if your overpowering and looking for speed i would get as close to the transom as possible

Good we have some info for a future obituary !!

The transom being re-plated by a piece of 1/4" steel is only a portion of the problem. It must be tied in and work in conjunction with the rest of the hull.

Your jackplate idea is really putting the cart in-front of the horse. First overpowering with twice the HP is not a good idea......

You just should find a hull that will accommodate that power which will be cheaper, safer and easier in the long run

yes it will be tied into the hull basically were caging it in an aspect if that makes sense so it will be all tied together to provide the support needed, basically you could hang 2 outboards by the time im done with it figuratively speaking obviously

I think I speak for the forum when I say...we need to see a video of this running when you are done.

Not like things like this haven't been done before...heck, look at some of the stuff guys have run into rebuilding their boats just on this site alone ( a particular glastron that weighed in at 3000lbs instead of the 1500lbs it should have comes to mind ).

Good luck!

Oh, and I see the same thing everyone else is commenting on...the 2nd roller from the back looks like it's not on the same plane as the rest of the hull should be....might want to take a string line to the boat and check it just in case....if you have a hook, all that extra motor is going to do is try to push the nose down and porpoise the boat....may not notice it now, but the extra power is going to enhance any flaws in the hull.

Re: Project: General Lee Miss behaving, Question about jackplate

well right now we are running a 115 on it and it does around 40 mph with 3 guys in it, we didn't get to run it wit jsut one guy in it but id assume you might get a few mph more out of it with the less weight but the 115 is an old and tired 1969 115 so its definately not performing as it should be. The motor on the boat in that pic is not mine it was the previous owners I bought the boat with no motor. So all in all the jackplate will not be very beneficial for our boat then I assume?
