Re: Prospective boat purchase...

Drive lift raises it all the way up to trailer, the trim allows you to control the angle however if you put it in reverse the lower will actually pop up out of the water.. Surprised me on an old Sunbird.... It has to be down to lock into place... I hated not having an actual trim... I actually has the 270 outdrive.. So I am not 100% sure the 275 is the same.

80 Baylinners are no worse than any other boat. I have seen Sea rays rotted as well as many different brands. Intrusive water rots. They did have funky dashes but I like them. I have an 88 cuddy and just flat love it. Yes I have heard the Baylinners are crud argument I just motor away taking in the comments. Never had mine out with out an offer to buy it or being told how nice people think she is. Different strokes for different folks.

I had a 280. Solid strong as all get out outdrive but no trim (I believe they added later). I once Read that they were originally designed for utility boats but made their way into runabouts.

No trim equals either no hole shot or plowing bow into water at plane. I had to set the out drive up a hair and control with powered trim tabs...what a pain

Lock for outdrive constantly broke so every time I put in reverse outdrive would pop up and slam down eventually causing cracks in housing for hydrolic pump and leaks.

The boat itself you are looking at looks good with a good motor combo (usually bayliners at that time were under powered causing a bad rap). I would pass strickly because of the outdrive.

Re: Is a 25 year old Sea Ray or Whaler that has been abused and neglected going to be any better than a well maintained Bayliner of the same vintage?

Yes, as to the Whaler. No question.

I think we can all agree that 80's Bayliners, especially Capris, weren't the best built. I think we can also all agree that pretty much ANY 80's glass boat that spent any part of its life exposed to the elements there's going to be a real good chance it's rotted. I would hope that we could also all agree that if it's solid, a 21' with a Volvo V8 for $3k is a pretty nice deal :)

Here, here!!

THANKS A LOT!!! That is the kind of feedback I was looking for!! That said, I will likely pass on this one.

Is a 19 foot Renkin with a 140hp Mercruiser going to be underpowered for what I want to do?

No problem!

What do you want to do? 4 adults 2 kids little bit of playing? It would work. I would try and find at a min a six cylinder....but I understand costs and the 140 will run good.

Man, I'm trying to think positive about your boat choices, I really am. Though the Renkin has a much better power plant and drive than the Bayliner you posted up....the Renkin boat itself wasn't made very well. What year is it?

This is why I am asking for advise ;) I don't know much about boats...

The Renkin is a '85. It is a one owner boat, always stored indoors... have not seen any GOOD pictures yet, but from the ones I have seen, the boat is CLEAN...

Wow, why does everyone have to give people a hard time? Welcome to the world of budgets and smart spending!

That combo sounds good. Make sure structurally sound and doesn't hurt to have a boat mechanic look at it. Water run is a must so you have no supprizes with performance when you buy it. Run it with close to the regular load that you will have on it.

Good luck in your ventures :)

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

I've been an old boat owner for a fairly short period of time but here are my observations for what it's worth (probably not much)!

1. Anywhere that a hole has been drilled through f/g and into wood is a potential source for water penetration and leaks
2. Inboard engines have far more places that this is likely to happen
3. The older the boat gets the higher the chances that sealing has failed and water has penetrated

If an older boat has been well maintained it's worth looking at and if it's an outboard then there is far less chance of it being rotten

See my sig - my 84 Bayliner Capri with 125 Outboard has solid transom and stringers - why? It was well maintained and doesn't have a great big hole in the transom for the outdrive, nor does it have an inboard engine that is bolted into the stringers.

In my case, the stringers are fiberglassed from stern to bow and unless the fiberglass is compromised then it can't leak water into the wood core.

So if looking for an older boat, I would always start with an outboard model.

Re-read my post, not giving the man a hard time...just that he's picked probably the two worst 80's era boats to look at. Renkins were just as cheaply made as the Bayliners were back then. The one positive of the Renkin is it has a Mercruiser.

I am in the Chicago area. I have been watching craigslist as well as other sources for Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago areas... I am not afrain to travel for the right deal ;)

We're glad you're asking.......keep asking and don't be in a hurry to buy a boat. If the boat you pick is the right one for you....then you'll know it.

Also, to address someone elses comment about a budget. With boats you either "pay me now or pay me later". With that said, he can buy a cheaply built and cheaply priced boat now only to dump a ton of $$ into it later or.....he can spend a little more $$ and buy a better quality boat and have less worries when it comes to seaworthiness and mechanical condition. Either way he's going to spend a "Boat load" (pun intended) of $$ to get on the water.

Though IMO Renkins are a step above junk, have the Renkin surveyed and if the guy said the hull, transom, floor and stringers are solid and dry....go for it.

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

Trust me... I am in no rush... However it is frusterating to me the number of "tire kickers" out there... Because of this type of buyer, many sellers do not respond to e-mails... Before I can seriously consider driving 3+ hours with fuel well over $4 a gallon I need some basic questions answered and some detailed pictures. This should only take a serious seller 5 to 10 minutes, however so many of them are sick of wasting their time fore someone who is only "thinking about buying a boat"... Me ,I have cash in hand and I am just waiting for the right boat... IMO any major purchase (especially long-distance) should be done something like this:

1) basic questions answered/detailed pictures (e-mail)
2) phone conversation, more detailed questions/set up time for inspection
3) in person inspection, road (lake) test, more questions
4) professional inspection
5) make an offer

This offers the most peace of mind for both parties with the least wasted time/money...
[/end rant]

Anyway... still looking at other options... will be calling on the Renkin later tonight... also hoping to look at a 20 foot Rinker today or tomorrow...
