On one hand, that sucks. I hate to see anyone get taken for a wad of cash.

On the other hand, that's kinda like financial Darwinism. That particular boat, for $1600? Money wired to someone in the UK? C'mon now. . .this guy is $1600 poorer because he deserves to be.

He lives in Michigan, right? Any idea how many clean used boats are currently for sale in Michigan? It's in the ZILLIONS. The fact that he went shopping on a brokerage website instead of his local newspaper or Craigslist is just plain stoopid!

I flag these on Crag's list all the time . . . eBay too. All you have to do is ask for an address so you can go look at it and they go silent . . .

My question is how did the scumbags get a ".org" website. I thought that was reserved for non-profit organizations.

I have been thinking to myself that as many scams as I see on craigslist similar to that one, there has to be some takers. Seems that they're so obvious noone would fall for 'em. Most of the time the kicker is that they don't list a phone number and won't accept cash. Pretty obvious there's a sardine aroma when someone doesn't want cash and doesn't want you to come get the boat or truck or whatever.
What a shame those thieves get away with it and do it so flagrantly.

Its amazing that people fall for these scams, especially seeing how much info is available about scams.

"There's a sucker born every minute" does not begin to describe this guy.

Well said, this guy is an idiot and deserves what he got. I hate that he was taken advantage of like that but come on no title = no sale!

No one would waste their time running a scam, it there were no takers. There are plenty of "victims" out there.

This guy was scammed, because he had at least one trait of the scammed - Greed, Gullibility, Ignorance.

Some people actually feel they are getting scammed, but go ahead with the deal anyway, hoping that their feelings were wrong and that they will get "something for nothing" or the "deal of the century"

The only scammees I feel sorry for are old people, who lived their lives trusting people, but are also now a little soft in the head. They are the favorite target of scammers, who will keep returning to clean out their life's savings.

Re: Psst, wanna buy a boat?

The ironic thing is, I got a title with my boat, but they won't let me register it without a notarized bill of sale (they couldn't care less that I have a title). It's laws like these that confuse people like that and allow theives to take advantage of them.

They only want a notorized bill of sale so they can squeeze you for as much sales/use tax as they can. Unlike cars, there are no reasonably sources for taxable values of boats, especially older ones.

It is interesting that they demand it be notarized. My state requires the bill of sale but not the endorsement.

What makes my jaw drop is the unbelievable stupidity of some people.

I spent a while telling ebayers when I spotted that auctions they were bidding on were scam auctions. Some of the replies were truly unbelievable. Some people actually refused to believe they were being scammed.

any fool with a credit card can register any top level domain. .com .net and .org .... you do not have to prove anything to a government agency to register....

Re: Psst, wanna buy a boat?

Hey.

Want a 1997 Crestliner 1750 sportfish LIKE NEW!!! - $5300

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/boa/715321192.html

Complete scam. Guy does the ebay escrow thing but will ship it to your door for that price, as long as you pay first. Of course the ebay page he sends you to is fake and he won't give his location and went pretty silent when I tried to set up and inspection and get the trailer vin.

Was trying to get any real info out of him to send to the cops, but nothing useful came up.

Anyway, this same boat was on about 30 Craigslist pages when I first saw it, everywhere from Miami to Edmonton.

Really wish something could be done but even reporting it to craigslist, the listing is still there.
