Re: Quadrajet Blues. Who can help?

It's my understanding they work in conjuction with the fuel mix in the idle circuit of the primaries.

New carb options:
- Edelbrock 1409 w/ squarebore to spreadbore manifold adapter.
- Holley 650 cfm spreadbore.
With both, expect some fuel line change.

What is the general consensus of the better carb setup? Who's useing them and what do you think? Thanks

I went with the Edelbrock 1409 with the spreadbore adapter plate. Also bought the Edelbrock 8143 braided SS fuel line from the fuel pump to carb. Total cost from Advance Auto Parts was $412 and should be here in a couple of hours from their warehouse. Thanks "imported_John_S" for the carb suggestions.

Thats the one I would have recommended, even though I don't like the adapter. Merc used it for many years, and a few posters here at iBoats have reported good results with it.

While you certainly have the ability to teardown/assemble carbs, the Edelbrock will probably not require tuning. Even if it does, there is high liklyhood it could be accomplished with a primary rod or spring change, which can be done without any dis-assembly.

PS: I hope you can get on the water soon and start to get some fishing time in.

Installed the Edelbrock today and fit is very good. Rain caught me so had to stop work. All I need to do is find a 90 degree fuel pump fitting for the fuel line and improvise the throttle support at the back of the carb. "Tomorrow is surely a brighter day!" I'll get some pics up as soon as possible. (Raining)

This darn fuel/carb situation is killing me. It's fighting me every inch of the way. Put the new fuel line on and the fuel line nut bottoms out before it tightens the fuel line to to the fitting. Back off it came and wrapped a lot of teflon tape around the fuel line so it would pull up tight. Don't like doing it that way but is the only way I could get it to work. "HOWEVER" she sure runs "SWEET" with this new Edelbrock carb on her! Now just gotta figure out how to make a bracket for the throttle cable. Maybe take the carb back off and thread the spare holes in the carb's flange and use bolts to secure it. Here's couple of pics.

Which end of the fuel line is giving you fits? pump or carb? I had no issue using a Merc fuel line at either end, or bottoming out on the 1409 or Q-jet. My Q-jet was tempermental at the threaded fitting at the carb. It needed a little dope.

Putting two studs next to each other, there will not be enough space between the carb stud w/nut and the round portion of the throttle bracket.

Can you just use longer studs and put the bracket over the carb hole flange? Maybe there is an obstruction I can't see. If it not by much, grinding the bracket might work.

Not very pretty but is functionally steady. I took the studs out and and used two 2" SS bolts instead. It will work until I find a better way to do it. I had problems at both ends of the new fuel line. Took the fuel line back to the parts house and exchanged it for another but had the same problem. I put lots of teflon tape at both ends and it pulled up tight.

Take a pic of the fuel line fitting and fuel line apart I am thinking you are putting an inverted flare fitting into a pipe thread or vice versa.

You cannot use tape on hard line threads they do not seal anything. The flare must seat on the inverted flare or it will go boom!!!!

This might help your throttle bracket problem

Wish I had a nice shiny new Edlebrock sitting on mine.....just sent the POS rebuild I got back to the builder, they are supposedly going to send me an origional number carb rebuilt to my specs. From what I've heard of the re-builder on forums, I am not holding my breath and fear I will be forced to purchase a new Edlebrock in the near future....now that the season is almost over and I am about out of money for this one (I gotta be ready for my new snowmachine when it comes in:D)

You are probably correct about it being a double flare fittings. I put the tape around the fuel line and not on the threads of the nut. That is why it pulled up tight and a double flare fuel line will probably cure my problem.

"SUCCESS" Took it out this morning and she ran smooth as silk and idled perfectly every time! Now I'm happy! Ran it up to 4000rpm @ 34mph. I didn't want to push the rpm's any more than that at this time. Hurrah for Edelbrock!

Re: Quadrajet Blues. Who can help?

Did you, by chance, get that carb from I-5? If so, I know what you are going thru......many on here have cursed themselves for buying from them.

I looked thru my reciepts and I did buy it from I-5 on eBay back in Sept '08. Looks like I'm out $272.
