Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Link, my hats off to anybody that is not scairt to try something new whether or not the project is successful. Looks like your buddy did well. Even now I toss out boards everyday that I misscut. $180 in lumber should buy you enough to build a couple dozen of those, but them afore mentioned stores know how to stick it to you. Next time have your buddy go buy some redwood or cedar fence boards for his planter projects. He can get alot more practice, and if it don't turn out well toss it and try again...Chief, oh yea, don't be sayn nuthin about guys in their 60's. ;)

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

A pastel stain will make red oak look like maple. I have used Minwax 'Summer Straw' pastel stain for my kitchen cabinets to match maple in the past, not sure if its stil availabe, but check the pastel line of Minwax or others. Pastels stain are not transparent like regular stains, they cover like a solid exterior stain. Other brans may use different terminology than "pastel".

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

I (like most) can ruff cut anything to function but when it comes to a nice finish... forget it. In the pics by Mark and OMC... I wish I could do that
Ya right....I am terrible at finishing wood. I just ran the router around it , smoothed it out a little (not enough)with fine sand paper drilled some holes and inserted pegs , stained it and brushed on a couple coats of polyurethane. wala a 6 foot coat rack is born.

Worth the read.<br /><br />OMC<br />Down play it as much as ya want but your coat rack looks great. :)

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

This thread is killing me, I have a 32"high wainscoat around my basment family room. It is red oak 3/4" X 3" tounge and groove. Man I think I should rip it down and sell it as planter material.

neumanns, look on ebay, folks are selling wook like that, one piece at a time. Maybe you can get in on the "gravy train". Then you can go to the "box store" and buy some more materials to fix up where you removed the boards, it'll only cost you twice what it should that way...Chief<br />Link, you just keep your buddy makin' stuff. If you need any help figuring projects just hollar....Chief ;)

Chief<br />"Link, you just keep your buddy makin' stuff. If you need any help figuring projects just hollar....Chief"<br /><br />Well he has been wanting for the last couple years to get into it. A year ago he had tools NONE. Except for a rusty skill saw from the 70's<br /><br />Which he was amazed that it could actually make beveled cuts.. he only thought it went up and down. LOL<br />I'm glad he is getting into this. Now I wont have to make his wifes bird houses and Squirrel feeders :) (Even though I really enjoy this)<br />Plus I'm getting into FUN wood working again.. almost as fun as cooking to chill out.<br />Wood Working is a chill .. worth working for .<br /><br />Link

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

I called around to the big lumber yards and got prices on 1x6 maple. Prices range from $3.85 to $4.73 per lineal foot. <br /><br />I need 30 linear feet. At 3.85/ft the knee wall tops will run $115, and 4.73/ft = $141!<br /><br />I will have to measure exactly to ensure that I pick out boards that fit my continous length needs. The longest continous piecs is 8' 6", the other pieces are between 3 and 6 feet.<br /><br />This is the office. It was painted yesterday. It's 6'x8' inside the wall. The maple top goes on the top and left side vertical at entry. Counter top is L shape on left and forward walls. I have two 36" wide x 31 tall wall cabinets for the forward wall, and 3 under counter file cabinets in maple. The black pencil line on the wall is the desk top height. I like that the file cabinets are all wood with full extension ball bearing drawers. The door on the left is to my workshop.<br /><br />BTW the cabinets came Fed Ex yesterday. Two cabinet doors were damaged. But I expected that cabinets shipped from Texas to NJ would suffer some damage. The driver called it in, gave me a claim number. I gave that to the cabinet rep and new doors are on their way UPS right now.<br /><br />

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Mark, the price of maple should be price by the "board foot". A board foot would be 12"x12"x1". If you look in the yellow pages under "Hardwood" you might find a store that sells what you want. You should pay about $2-$4 per board foot. I pay the $2 here, and if you find the store that specializes in hardwoods you should pay a little more, but not over $4. The list I gave you was a list of "woodworking clubs" in your area. I thought if you contacted someone there, they could tell you where you could buy the wood you are wanting. You need about 20bf and that should cost you around $50. Chief

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Chief,<br /><br />I did find one place that sells by board foot. I would have to visit the shop to see what sizes they have, I believe it was random lengths and widths. Then I have to glue it all up to make long pieces and rip to right width, etc. Does that sound right? I thought it would be simpler to buy by the linier foot, no?

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

If the boards are ready to use then the price isn't so bad. If you are happy with it go fer it. If I had to rip-glue-rip-plane-joint-sand rough boards to do your job it would cost more than than you're gonna pay by the foot price...go for it. I always look at this stuff from a diferent perspective, but then I have all the equipment to do the job. Chief ;)

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Another option I am looking into is to get one nice maple board, 1x6 x 8ft and a piece of maple veneer plywood. Then rip some 1/2" strips off the board, rip the ply into 4 3/4 and glue the board strips to the edges of the ply. Then a 3/8 round over bit in the router smooths it all out.<br /><br />I have a few weeks to get it all figured out.

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

That's not a bad idea Mark, but the cost will be about the same, and the labor will be more, alot more. I think your solid boards will look nicer. <br />You can make the joint at the corner better and sand it flush without sanding thru to the ply...just my opinion...Chief ;)

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

hello Mark, quite a thread yu have going, one thing that has a lot to do with the color of oak is how it it cut. the trick is to get quarter sawn oak rather than the slab sawn.. the grain is much tighter on the quarter sawn.. more expensive tho.. but less color variation and it takes the stain much more evenly.....good luck

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Mark, I forgot to mention, there are more than one brands of maple tree. The red, or soft maple is the one that you are looking for. Take a sample to the lumberyard with you, maybe a door off the cabinet or somethng like that... Chief ;)

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

one thing to note here Mark.. <br /><br />"ALWAYS wipe your rear with the same hand.." :p ;) <br /><br />If maple.. stick with maple.. the graining pattern differences will be bogus no matter what you do with a different species.<br /><br />I tried to let ya go but I just had to open my mouth and let out my .02  <br /><br />Have you tried the regular "hometown" lumber yards yet?? where you're able to talk to a professional?<br /><br />see these places purchase and sell mostly under the same old "margin" principle.. If you're able to talk with a guy that services builders (on a moderate scale) and has a decent account list he's not going to gouge you for an extra 15-20points.. my purchasing is @ 24points across the board on "whole house" packages.. If the salesman can slide your 3-1X6X12's (or whatever your LNF break down is) into a trim package order .. there's no reason he can't give you the same or CLOSE price as what the builder is getting..<br /><br />just something to ponder I guess

Re: Question about red oak and white oak

Barlow,<br /><br />Ok, ok, ok!!! I'll stick with the maple. I know it will look best. Professional, even!<br /><br />Chief, For some reason, the little helpers don't seem to speed thing up much. In fact, everything takes 3x longer! <br /><br />Not sure what to put on top of the cabinets for the TV. Granite would be nice, but just way too much! Probably formica. I still have to do flooring. Thinking of a combo of carpet and vinyl tiles at this point.
