Hi There. Yesterday I purchased a 1971 24' Reinell cabin cruiser for $800 on a caukins trailer. The motor is a Mercruiser 165 straight 6.Everythingis actually in good shape and appears to be complete. I would like to make some modifications to it,i.e add baitwell and fish boxes, rod holders, downriggers, Alaskan bulkhead. I need to re-wire the thing and the outdrive has some issues. I noticed that there is damage to the fiberglass from where it was tied to a dock and got chaffed. Also the keel paint is chaffed down to the point that I see fiberglass abot 1/2 inch wide on either side of keel up to bow eye. I this a major problem or just a matter of repainting? Any one have more info on this boat and maybe some ideas on the mods listed above? I can post photos as soon as I upload them to photobucket. Thanks in advance.

Re: Reinell Restore

The hole in the bow keel is actually above the water line below the winch eye bolt. It had fiberglass in it and I dug it out. The hole doenot appear to penetrate through to the inside. ad seemed solid when probed. My guess is that the previous owner beached it alot and had it in a slip because some of the damage looks like up and down gouges. Over all I think I got a real good boat for $800. There is no rust on the engine so I don't think there have been water in the bilge issues.

Re: Reinell Restore

on the back side of the eye bolt there is a really big block of wood there that is glassed to the hull.....its mondo important !

the thing i cant understand is how the bow eye got thru in the first place....unless the bolts came off from the back......and thats highly unlikely.

but....no matter......it will just take several layers of glass from the inside to patch.....then a layer or two on the outside.

but.......you really gotta know how the boat actually is under the floor.....just read a bit on here and you'll know what im talking about.

then search core sample

Sorry for the mistake the hole is actually about 8-10inches below the eye. The winch eye is just above the pic

Re: Reinell Restore

So I am thinking I would like to raise the aft deck up about 18" as the the gunnel comes to about my chest. Then maybe put in fish boxes for salmon and tuna and lingcod, seabass, and halibut. Need a livewell too. Any thoughts. I can take more photos if necessary. Thanks

Really check out that hull core samples of transom,If you want to raise the deck cut out old, check stringers and repair or replace whats rotted. As old as she is there is bound to be some rot.Fix it right the first time and you'll have a boat to be proud of for a long long time.Id paint her instead of gell unless you are going to leave it in the water for long periods of time.Great looking boat and a steal of a deal.Cant wait to see how she turns out.

I have been reading some of the core sample threads but am still not sure as to the best way to get a transom sample. I will probably just paint as the boat will not sit in the water for extended periods of time. That is why I joined this site , to get ideas and such.:D

Re: Reinell Restore

take drill .....bit......flashlight ......masking tape....measuring tape......and 3m 5200 into the motor cage and weasel your way back till you can see the transom.

measure and tape a 3/4 inch ring around tour drill bit.....dont go deeper than the tape "ring".......

in various spots....close to any thru hull openings......drill into the transom.....the wood that comes out of the bit is your core sample....if its damp or wet .....what color is it.....uh....black is no good.

as far as raising the aft deck........wow i have never seen a gunwhale that comes up to someones chest .........unless your a "little person".....no probs raising it......but at 19 ins ....you will need another set of staris from the cabin

Does it matter what drill bit size? The gunell comes to the bottom of my chest which is 46 inches. Yeah I figured that I would have to add another step. Just have to be careful when "Fish On":D
