Does anyone know anything about this topic, how dealers do it, if they really put in the correct block, how not to get screwed. I have the remanufactured block number, how do i go about finding out what size the block is.

The casting number on the block will tell you its history.
Several websites out there that you can find the info.

This is a GM block....Mercury does not make engine blocks.

ditto.. and add that there's nothing special aobut a marine engine block... just brass casting plugs, usually put in after the fact rather than at the beginning by design...

Re: Remanufactured Mercury Blocks

Mercury does make engine blocks. Mercury is outboards.
Mercruiser, a division of Mercury Marine, does not make engine blocks. Well, except for the 470, and they gave that up.

So I guess the question is, which block are you talking about.

Does anyone know anything about this topic, how dealers do it, if they really put in the correct block, how not to get screwed.

All you have to tell them is you want a Mercruiser remanned engine, not one from some aftermarket reman factory. It will have a Merc serial number plate on it.
If you go in and tell them you want a remanned engine installed, there is no way in the world of knowing what they put in. You have to tell them what you want. From there it can be verified.

Re: Remanufactured Mercury Blocks

I did tell them that i wanted a merc remanned engine. I have the serial number from the dealer for the block. It is 8 numbers long, but with no letters like the new engines from merc have. How do i go about verifying it. I had a 350Mag/Bravo 1 in the boat originaly, and i want the same put back in. I was told a long block alone would cost 3500. So i'm hopeing they didn't just order a block from somewhere else, and throw it in for cheaper and pocket the rest.

You might try posting the SN of the block you received. It may or may not be Mercruiser number. You should have received some warranty information from your dealer if it was a Mercruiser reman. Did you ???????

Re: Remanufactured Mercury Blocks

Mercruiser uses GM truck blocks. But like Don S. said, If they used a Mercruiser reman motor, it will:
1, Have a mercruiser serial number riveted to the block on the STARBOARD :) side, right above the starter. And,
2, Come with the warranty paperwork. With Mercruisers name and logo on it.

If the shop says it didn't come with that stuff, the motor didn't come from Mercruiser. Period.

I had recently replaced my GM 350 due to improper winterizing from previous owner. This motor had a mercruiser serial number plate on it. Upon removing the motor it turned out to be a two bolt main. These reman guys are going to try to sell you on this issue and justify the price. (4 bolt main, high tech connecting rod bolts and main bearing cap bolts etc.).

Your 4 bolt main info is a bit flawed, Mercruiser, Volvo, and OMC (when they were in buisness) all used 2 bolt mains in their engines, not 4 bolt. Look in all of the OEM service manuals at the engine specs. all say 2 Bolt mains.

Re: Remanufactured Mercury Blocks

Thanks for your help and posting you guys, you dont know how much i appreciate the help. the new number that he gave me is 92012842. I was told that merc reman numbers didn't have letters in it like the new motors from the factory, hopefully this is true. the thing that gets me is i was told that i needed a new engine coupler, so basically he could order any motor and just match it up with my bravo 1, right?

Wow,

the word "remanned" and GM really polarize an audience!!. Actually Brunswick purchases the GM sourced blocks from Tonawanda engine plant 1 in Albany New York for Mercruiser. The earlier blocks were the same units used in G Vans (Gen I). they had 4 bolt mains and cast numbers included 010. Brunswick sonically tests these blocks for cylinder core shift and discards about 50% of them to rebuilders (good enough for passenger car service). Originally Brunswick Marine specified High Tin alloy block for added rigidity. These blocks were sought after by the racing community as a foundation for Pro Stock motors. The newer Gen II and Gen III (Scorpion) are regular production due to better casting and machining quality.

I've worked on PS cars.....PS hasn't used a production block since I was in HS.

What you need to do thumbdoctor, is post some proof of your statements.
Nothing worse than a Newbe posting wild claims that can't be proved.
And NO, links to some other forum isn't even close to proof.
