Hey guys :)

Ok so my steering is stuck, i've read up and followed old threads and pretty much know what to do except i've hit a hurdle.

With reference to the linked image, i have removed the clevis pin , i can then move outdrive quite easily so all good there. I've tried undoing the attaching nut but it all turns at the same time, the steel rod and the black piece of pipe after the nut (in image it has a yellow dot on it).

Should i just get my grips on this section of black pipe to hold it whilst i undo the nut? ofcourse i wouldn't on the steel rod because it would damage it, but it ofcourse also would this black pipe.

any advice would be appreciated :)

thanks

Fantastic, thanks.

It's so cramped in there i can barely get my head in to see the full length of the steering mechanism, i would have never seen those flat spots

thanks :)

Re: Removing steering cable

Hi guys,

ok i need to clear some things up...

got the locking nut off, but cable won't come out and when i turn wheel i can see the cable trying to move and loose nut moving back and forth, which ofcourse means the cable is, but it's the rod end stuck in the tube.

i've read Don S saying about applying heat to remove, do i apply heat to the black tube or to the steering rod?

is the rod, right to the end with the hole in it all supposed to come out, ie is it all part of the cable?

am attaching a pic, do i heat red or gray :)

Re: Removing steering cable

If you remove the nut end and the cable part moves then yes, the rod part is corroded in the tube . Apply heat(gently) to the red colored part and apply a penetrating oil to the end of the red tube. Once removed the tube must be cleaned of corrosion by a long wire brush, a 12Ga. shotgun brass brush, plumbers brush, etc.
When servicing steering cables yearly, a handful of grease is applied to the rod while someome moves the cable in and out a few times.
