********need help********

Ok guy's I need help here. Tonight I was wet sanding the sides of the hull on the blue paint like I have been doing sinse the begining. Now on the portside I am having CLUMPING in the sand paper and the coat of paint that I just put on last night is coming off. So what the fart did I go wrong?

Ok so I am using Brightside one part marine paint by Interlux.
Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202
Brushing liquid 333 to improve the flow of the brightside.

So ofcourse I ran out of the 202:eek: in which I have been using the entire time. But my local supplier has been out so what does a desperate guy do:confused: I go out to Blowe's and buy TSP-PF All Purpose Heavy Duty Cleaner. Now it clearly states it is used to clean surfaces in preperation for painting!!!!

WTFART, no it is not working, my 4th coat is shedding like a dog in blotches in random places. But it is not doing it on the starboard side.:( So now that Murphy has finally showed up to the party and I have gone back two steps what do I need to do to fix the problem?

If I cannot get anymore Interlux 202 what can I use to wipe down the paint surface in preperation for the new coats?

And, sadly, if it's doing it on one side, it will do it on the other as well.
Shake it off, though. There should always be a slight hiccup or two just to
keep us honest!

Looking good so far, btw.

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Ok I spoke with Interlux and it seems I have been misinformed on how to apply brightside 100% correctly from the begining.

When using any brightside paint the only two solvents that can be used to prep the surface before applying the paint is either 216 or 333 NOT 202.

You may also substitue using Xylene.

To properly apply you must dampen the applicator rag and wipe the surface evenly and quickly to not hold the rag or applicator on the surface for more then 20 sec. With another rag or applicator go behind the coated rag with a clean dry rag to wipe off any excell product.

When applied allow to dry for atleast 45 min to an hour to allow any gases to evaporate and clear before apply your paint.

So now he told me to go back over the side that is contaminated with 220 grit paper to knock off any of the contaminated parts. He also stated that if any of the paint is not showing signs of solvent pop, blistering, or peeling that it is ok. I would of known that there was a problem with that area if it was removing the paint in clumps and not as fine dust.

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Okay an update!!!!

I had sanded the blue on the sides with 220 grit which took off a good two layers of paint. I just wanted to make sure I got whatever was contaminating the paint. I applied a new coat of blue and back on track. I am going to put on atleast 2-3 more coats now...

I took a break from painting to finish up on the transom. I sanded and prepped the area for the new 1/4 plywood piece. After bonding the plywood to the origional transom. I sanded everything and prepped for the first of two layups of 1708 glass. Here are some pics. of what I have done...

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

I have finished grinding away all of the old fiberglass from the transom and prepped for the 1/4" 5 ply wood to be epoxied on and then glass in the 1708 Biaxel glass.

You do super work and the end result will be a thing of beauty! However, that only looks like 3 ply material. Any chance I could talk you into adding one more layer of 3 ply before you begin to finish that great old boat? I think the number of plys is important. Good luck!

You know it is funny you said that, I was thinking the same thing. I do have one more piece that I can throw on there. That is why I am on here, to get good advice from great people who are do it yourself people like me.

So if I understand correctly, I should rough this up really good and use fiberglass mat to bond the two pieces together right?

It took a while for my Resin to kick. I was using the pro measurements and at 104 degree's I was at 1% MEKP. I may add one or two more CC'S to get it to kick a little bit sooner.

FUN FUN FUN, I sure cant wait to get her back on the water. Everybody in my family thinks I am going to sell her when I am done to get another project. Man I sure hope that is not true and I can prove that I really love this boat because I really do and besides that doesn't meen I cant buy ANOTHER project boat...:D

I wouldn't add another layer and thus screw a zillion more fastners in there. You've already added to OEM I'm sure you're good. If you're concerned, add more glass.

I agree with EZ!!

Another layer of 1708 will give you the strength you need. Make sure your tabbing to the sides is 8" to 10" and you will be good. Sand the sides to BARE glass before tabbing.

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Just to clear things up here. I only used the screws to hold the plywood to the shape of the transom while the epoxi cured in place. So the screws are only there for that purpose. I did not think keeping the screws in would cause any problems, but I did think having to take all of them out just to fill each one was more of problem then it was just leaving them in place.

As for applying another layer of 1708. I was definately planning on adding the second layer and it was going to go past the previous layer by 4-5 inches. This would spread out the energy atleast 10" from the transom through the floor. I am also going to finish ripping up the origional fiberglass flooring cover and replace with new fiberglass matting which will start at the transom and go all the way to the bow!

So should I add the plywood or not?

UPDATE****

The last two weeks have been real slow. The wife was demanding my time and a huge honey do list. Now that I have her happy again Daddy can play in the garage.

Last week I went and picked up most of my parts for the motor. Walet a little lite!

Installed all new gaskets for the top end.
New thermo's and over flow valves.
The crappy little restrictor hoses that go in the heads which were designed to fail and cause the serious overheat to begin with $5 total to create $1000 in damage, PRICELESS....
NEW Coil packs, wires, and spark plugs.
Carberator rebuild kits.
New Water Pump kit

After putting the motor back together and tripple checking everything here is a list of what I still need to buy.

NEW VRO Pump $406 YIKES but great insurance and comes with a Warranty from BRP!
NEW Starter $180 OUCH, once again a warranty!
Waiting for the two hoses that go from the thermostat housing to the heads.
And one of the heat temp. sensors wich was $69 HOLY SMOKES.

After giving a complete wash I can now do touch ups with Evinrude Blue.

Here are some pics.
