Re: Restoration Project.

Hey All,

Trip to Melbourne coming up so my wife has made me grow my facial hair back for the photos. No good seal on my respirator means no work on the boat for a while.

I did get a brainwave however - While reading through another restoration post, (think it was Jon Sob's MFG - Nice work on that one btw mate) a mention was made of the title paperwork for licencing. This boat was a deceased estate sold by the sister of the fellow who passed away.

It has a lot of sentimental value to the family and I was happy to get it for $600, with the agreement that I would actually use it with my family instead of restoring and selling for profit (which was always my intention - not putting in this much work for someone else to enjoy it) and that I keep the name 'Bluey' as it meant a lot to the family.

All history aside, I got a signed statement from the sister for transfer of ownership but there was no record of any title papers or documentation for the boat itself. Just the rego number on the side.

So this morning it hit me - maybe the licencing centre might be able to trace what type of boat this is from the rego number. Email was sent this morning and they say 24 hour response, so should have an answer within 2 weeks or so (they are a government department after all).

All cynicism aside, I will keep you all posted when I find out what they do have.

You can put vaseline (petroleum jelly) on your face to get a good seal and you will be fine.

Re: Restoration Project.

OK
Surprisingly fast response from Licensing Centre saying that they cant help me but to try the marine licensing dapartment and giving me a phone number to call. Called tehm and they had the boat listed as unknown cabin cruiser. It was first registered in 1979 and has had 12 owners since then. It has been unregistered since 2001.

So I am Lucky 13th owner and am not much closer to finding out what type of boat this is....

Back to the drawing board. I think I will email the seller for the advertisement I saw in Queensland to see how sure he is that it is a bellboy...

I'll keep you posted.

Well at least your government was good enough to tell you they have no clue! I'm sure ours would just tell me that they are "researching" it and will be back to me in a few years, lol!

Re: Restoration Project.

Ok back from Melbourne.

More pics to come of the hull with the floor removed. Next step is to get stuck into it with grinders and sanders to clean it up a bit. then the stringer will come out when i can afford materials to re-stringer it. I'll upload more pics tonight if i can get past this jetlag...

Turns out that the wedding I went to was at a motor yacht club. The club president was very helpful and I am going to send him some pics. He might know a guy who can identify my boat :)
very excited...

Re: Restoration Project.

Hey Guys,

Been a hectic week, so much on with job interviews and work rosters :(
Finally have had a chance to upload the pics of the floor removed. can see some rot in the stringer where the transom was up against it but the rest seems pretty good. Regardless though I am going to replace the entire stringer (following all the insructions from previous threads of course...)

I have a mate that works for a hardware place here who apparently can source some marine ply for me. They import it from the UK and hoping to at least take advantage of his staff discount if nothing else. I'll be looking into lengths and thicknesses and seeing how close a fit i can get from the marine ply, though it should be fine because i can layer it.

The stringer looks to be made of some sort of hardwood so not sure whether it would be best to replace like for like or change it out for the treated stuff. Any suggestions? The floor was screwed directly into the stringer in 5 places, and knowing how poorly plywood takes screws through the ends of the panel, not sure if this would be better with one solid section of hardwoord rather than the layered ply??

Here are the photos.....

Notice that after removing the floors, there is still a puddle sitting in the front of the hull from the moisture in the wood.

Re: Restoration Project.

While i'm asking stupid questions... The inside of the hull is very rough and bumpy, I'm assuming from the matting/cloth used for the glassing. is there any way to smoothe this a bit? I am worried that if I sand down the bumpyness to a smoother surface I will expose the matting and if I add a layer of resin to it it may lose some of it's flexibility?? any thoughts?

Cheers

Re: Restoration Project.

Hey Bluey,

Welcome back...

First off, the pics didn't come through, try again and make sure you use the "Go Advanced"...

Second, there is no such thing as a stupid question, only people who make stupid mistakes because they didn't ask a question...

Third, the roughness down inside shouldn't be much of a concern, once the deck gets put back on, you'll hopefully never see it again...plus some or most of it will probably disappear when you start grinding to get ready for the new bits...

And fourth, Resin by itself does absolutely nothing in a structural sense, basically it is just liquid glass, and when it hardens, it breaks like glass... the real strength in a boat comes from the fiberglass Matting that gets impregnated with the resin...there is some great info in "friscoboater's" thread, and in the sticky at the top of the forum page titled,"How To's and Other Great Information"...#2 and #11...

Re: Restoration Project.

Hi and welcome back,Yep advanced button when you post pics..
Question; Why would you want to sand the inside of the hull?
Rot travels,if the stringer against your transom has rot,Most likely you have got rot in your transom and other places,Have you checked your transom?Tapping,or even better drilling a core sample?Sometimes you cant even see it but its there,Since you have gone so far already why not do a complete gutjob and be sure all the rot molecules are gone,Again I havenot seen the pics but for a boat that old I would not take any chances.

Ok
Here are the photos

281111 009.jpg

You can see from the photos that the white part is above the floor line. it is not really pleasant to look at and being that this is going to be almost the internal side walls of the boat, i'd like to get then relatively smoothe. Any suggestions?

Mike, I found the rot in the transom and started tearing it out. That is when i noticed the rot in the stringer. This led me to the rot in the floor/sole and inside the box seats.

What started as a simple cut and polish and repaint, became a MUCH bigger job...

But I am happier finding it now than after I have it all looking nice and having to pull it all apart again...

Re: Restoration Project.

Hey BB,
My .02, couple different choices...
1-Sand, prep, cover with a layer or 2 of CSM, then maybe gel-coat or paint [lot of work] 2- sand, prep, paint with a textured paint,[a little less work] 3- clean real good, and cover with a marine carpet or somesuch covering material, using some industrial strength contact adhesive,[still some work, but costly]

Others will prolly come up with other ideas...

Re: Restoration Project.

Carpeting on the walls... Something I hadnt thought of... sounds good.

I'm not quite up to deciding what I'm going to do with the interior yet. Stringer is hopefully coming out this weekend and then timeframes are all depending on how much money I can scrape together to buy materials

I do like the idea of carpeting up on th interior thought so that is looking like the plan - It will look good and be nice and easy to get in. I'll have to price it up though....

I was originally looking at doing carpet on the flooring section and then some poly paint with a sort of flick speckle run through it up the sides. My wife is better at this interior design stuff so i might get her opinion (chances are she'll tell me to do whatever is cheapest :D
