Re: Restoring 1986 Sea Nymph SS155 (pics)

For my dash I am think of doing plexiglass/lexan and painting the back side with matching red auto base paint. The clear material should act like a clear and make the color pop. I have been doing reading on the best ways to do this. Using steel wool or 1000 grit wet sand to prep surface and then paint...

I have been told that lexan is better than plexiglass as its more sturdy.... but according to fshngho in a recent thread he states "Plexiglass...NO, Lexan yes. Similar in most ways but lexan will not break. That means you can use 1/8" thick lexan, which means you can bend it..in a break if you want, just like sheetmetal. You can get it in all colors & tints, dark gray or dark bronze, black, red, blue, etc. Plex and lexan are an oil based material which means paint will not stick. Maybe for a short while but it will peel off. Ever tried painting something after you coat it with WD-40?"

I have done some reading and many people have painted plexiglass with success for many applications... plus all high end R/C cars are made from lexan and people custom paint these all the time.

Questions: Has anyone performed this with success? Good application? Paint to use?

Thanks

Yeah I thought painting the back side of a piece of plexi for an application such as this was pretty standard.

That's what I was thinking too... put a couple of nice layers to help protect from scratches but it'll be on the backside so risk is minimal... Plus touch ups would be a cinch

Figured some lexan from HD/Lowes... Then question is paint... Like I stated earlier I did some researching and heard automotive base paint meant to be topped with clear really adds depth to the color as the lexan provides the "clear". The applications ranged from custom computer CPU towers to snow mobile hoods. Should work great for a dash IMO

Are you putting the lexan over your existing dash's? Hope so, because 1/8th would be pretty flimsy by itself.

Another layer of lexan on the back side over the paint would prevent peeling possibly.

Im in the process of making up a port dash for my stereo and one of the 6.5 speakers to mount into.

@bouttime: Yea i was gonna do the dash in lexan... Not sure the sizes i can find local ill have to start looking... buddies dad who has the machine shop may be able to get some thick stuff for me. But doubling it up sounds like a good idea. I'm starting to sew the vinyl for the gunnel pads and hopefully today finish the bow seating. Guess we'll see what gets done

Well the trim and tilt has been mounted. Now just need to get the motor attached to her. I used the high setting when mounting the TnT so I had a little more play with the motor when I finally attach it. Well that's the plan... hopefully i didn't screw anything up. A buddy's step dad works in a metal shop and cut use some 6061 yesterday. Used Bouttime's set up and got 3 pieces; one 16x3x 1/4", and two 3x3x 1/4". Then all the transom holes and bolts were sealed using Loctite Marine epoxy. Searched a couple of places for 3M 5200 but couldn't find any... So hopefully that marine epoxy will work well. Did some research and all people says it works but removal is difficult. Hopefully the only time to remove this thing would be when the transom needs to be redone. Here's a couple of pics of the progress... another post shortly

Ok here goes my attempt at sewing... Wish me luck... Ill post the results

Red and white marine vinyl... exact match of seats purchased through overton's
Heavy duty sewing machine needles and outdoor uv resistant white thread from walmart
Sewing machine... on loan from the parents

Time to youtube and learn some helpful hints... so far i hear vinyl likes to stick to the foot. A quick fix is a piece of scotch tap to the underside of the foot to prevent sticking..... any other helpful hints?

Just a suggestion, but you may want to redo that seat base ply and 45 that inside corner instead of just having it 90.

I couldnt get the wrinkles out of my vinyl on that inside corner being 90 degrees.

I dont have any good pics that show them well, but the tops of mine (not counting the wood piece) are flush with the top of the alum trim.

@bouttime: Thanks for the bits of info... Yeah I saw the wrinkles and was wondering how to maybe prevent that... ill looking into the 45 rather than 90. For some reason the consoles didn't want to go back in straight. I mounted them flush but they are torqued just a hair. Guess its due to the cedar floor... but it works just gonna fill the gaps of the windshield with weatherstripping. If I find any helpful hints on how to cover an inside corner ill let ya know

Hey Piece, make sure you mock up everything including the windshield when you go to permanently install your consoles. I didn't do that, installed the consoles, then cut out the back pieces for them (these: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2582.jpg) then went to try to align my windshield and had to so some major moving of the consoles. Darn near made it so I had to recut the panels.
