I "rolled and rolled" mine. Lay the paint down and smooth it out. Then, if you have a bunch of bubbles, just go over it with quick motion of the roller. I have found that it knocks the bubbles down but is moving too fast to lift up new ones.

Huron: Appreciate it! The wood shouldn't swell too much as cedar is naturally water resistant and then the penofin on top of it but i spaced about 1/16" just in case. Doesn't seem like a lot but its a decent sized gap.
For the price of the CMC unit i better love it ;) and the consoles have 2 coats of primer which was sanded and then this was the first coat of top coat which is a gloss finish. I plan on sanding and putting a new coat on today

EZ: Ill try the roller trick today. I actually was thinking that it looked smooth with just the roller but kinda figured the tip was to get the air bubbles out. We will try the quickness... ill let ya know how it goes

My SeaNymph didnt have the panels on it any more, but I assume they are on a thin piece of plywood and screwed to the gunwale. A snap button would hide the screw when done.

I planned on using the snap button ones where the receiver part has the screw and then the button covers the screw. The ones I took off where matched to the vinyl. Are there ones that allow u to match? or am i stuck with the silver... Know of where i can get some?

Lowes and HD has some pretty strong velcro sold in lenghty rolls. It won't be cheap, but it should do the job. If you go the screw routes, although it's a meticulous job, you could punch material and glue to the caps to hide the screw. It would be alot cheaper than velcro and the panels will lay flatter.

Great job so far on this restore. It doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as it gets finished the way you want it done. The good news is you'll have something to be proud of for a long time to come still.

Question about the cedar, (which looks amazing btw), does it shrink up as it ages like treated decking material? If not, there's some really great spots in my "soon-to-be" resto project to use that stuff.

Woodonglass: Thanks for the info! Much appreciated! Ill check into it, may have to use screws as trying to stay away from rivets, never used them and don't know where to begin. All i know is they are a pain in the arse to drill out

emoney: I'll look into the home depot/Lowes stuff. I would like it to lay as flat as possible and was steering away from Velcro for the reason but didn't really know how gripping the industrial stuff could be. The cedar boards are not pre-treated decking boards, the natural oils in cedar make it resistant to water. I just picked it up at Lowes, they have a section just for cedar boards, not in the decking section. The hardest part was trying to find boards that weren't warped with the fewest knots. I not sure about whether or not it would shrink. There may be some wood guys on here that could help ya there. I don't anticipate any shrinkage maybe slight swell but even that is kinda unlikely due to the stain and cedars natural properties. Good yearly maintenance should keep her sturdy for a good number of years... *crossing fingers*

For the side rails I'm using a thin laminate type board that I am hitting with the left over Penofin stain. I am trying to stay away from the button attachments as I don't want to screw through the vinyl and the buttons on the back would leave a good gap that would be too noticeable and I am waaaayyyy too OCD for that. Any body use a good set up with bolt/nut/rosette type set up. I will weigh that against the industrial velcro. Thanks

Ok another question for ya guys and gals... Whats the best way to clean the windshield aluminum frame, I have a can of nevr-dull that I have used in the past for multiple applications, but I have seen a lot about steel wool, mother's aluminum polish. I also have 2000 grit sandpaper... would that do anything... just don't want to ruin it. I'd love to bring it back to a healthy shine. I do know that it has some corrosion on it but its not inundated. Any help would be great... Ill try to snap some pics after I give it a thorough scrub down.

Id start with WD-40 and fine steel wool.

Give it a light scrubbing while wetting it with the WD-40.

Woodonglass: What type of compound did ya use? I used nevr-dull on one piece last night and it came out decent... My buddy told me it looked a ton better but all I could see was the corrosion spots. Would 200) grit sand paper or the steel wool work better for that stuff?

Thanks for the replies!
