Re: Restoring my MFG

Yea I do...... It's been really hectic 'round here. I've been meaning to post my last out door project for a few weeks now. Hopefully I'll get it up on the board soon!
Thanks for asking Jon!

Hey Edc, Any clue where I can find a steering wheel? I really like the one you have with the circling sharks. If not an original maybe a repo for my 64.. Thanks!

Sphelps..
Here is a little info on the MFG steering wheels.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=293497

There are only a few options available to get one.....Keep checking eBay of course, You can set up a search in eBay for daily emails.
Second, Keep an eye out on Craigslist. Google has a search feature that does Craigslist nationally. A lot of times they will list a free boat or something really cheap. Keep in mind, the mfg wheels were used on many different boats. Just the center hub were changed.
Lastly is a scrap yard. iboats has a "sticky" posted on the main forum, that lists several.
Hope that helps

Hi Jon and everybody,

Still here and kickin' Not too much going on being winter and all. Haven't had much snow, and the temps are decent, but not good enough to do much outside. Got my boat up on blocks and all covered up. If the weather keeps going this way, I'll be able to get an early start back at it. Thanks for asking. In the meantime, I'll be lurking Ha!:)

Thats an amazing job your doing with that fine boat Edc , the attention to detail is amazing. I am currently fixing my Seacruiser up not quite as good as you are but she should look nice when im done with her, did you gelcoat the dash, paint it, or just buff it up?

The original gauges and wheel were all removed. then the openings were filled and the dash was gelcoated. Here is a link..

EdC, you mentioned that you spot putty'd the transom to fill in spots, 2 questions , what did you use for putty and what did you use to fill the upper left and right side of the transom where it kinda wings up there on the sides?

Adoseth,
I first put forms in the sides. They were made from 1/8" Masonite (red arrow) Then I drilled 3/4" holes in the top (black arrow) and poured it there. I used a hole saw and just patched the plug back in. Another way would be to make a large notch in the top of the form(big enough for a good size funnel) and pour it at a slight angle that way. I had alot of patches to do so a couple more on the top side wasn't a problem.. Hope that helps you out...

Re: Restoring my MFG

Well now, ....... It's been awhile since I posted anything on my project. With all the "down time" winter causes, it's hard to remember where I left off. The weather has been pretty good here. So I'm itchy to get back at it!
Where do I start??? Perhaps a re-cap is in order........

Last fall, I finished the cockpit's port side. AKA "ski racks"

Next up was the starboard side.

Finally the starboard ski rack is complete and installed. The vertical pieces are the glove box ends. The original MFG's were sheet metal and had too many gaps for me. So, I made these. What the heck, I had the mahogany anyways.

Next, was the cockpit's fiberglass starboard side panel. Like the port side, the DI-NOC vinyl wood grain was applied. Much easier the second time around!

Time to rough fit the panel and see how things look. More to come... Soon I promise!

Great work EdC!! I like the fiberglass ski racks my 64 has the aluminum side's with white and black texture tape on them. I was thinking on maybe using the composite decking material for the bottom. You think that would work?

Re: Restoring my MFG

I think composite decking is a good idea..... But there are a few things to consider. First, it's expensive. Second, I needed a full 8" wide board. Don't know if decking comes that wide. Lastly, I needed to plane mine down to a 1/2 thickness. A local woodworking shop planed my mahogany for a few bucks. I would image, most shops would be a bit hesitant to run decking through their planer. Worth checking into though.

I thought that I had read somewhere that composite decking was kind of heavy and would add extra weight to the boat. Never used the stuff so I am not sure if that is true or not.

You are right Jon, it is heavier.. er... denser. But, what sphelps wants to do, it would be negligible. My guess would be less than 10lbs. additional for 2 boards
