Is it possible to flip over your average runabout? I have a 1986 Regal medallion 18' 140hp 17pitch and it seems no matter what I do water doesn't even enter the boat no matter how hard I handle it at any speed. My friend has a 21' 1990 Maxum with an L-drive 120hp 17pitch and It almost seems like his was going to flip people almost jumped out but it just bobbed back out of the water. Is it possible to sink these boats going at insane 40mph speeds or is it the slow speed massive whirlpool donuts that we need to be watching out for?? Please help I need to know if I'm going to sink! Should I be operating as a lesser throttle??

i would say yes its possible.Hit a wake or wave at the wrong angle and you could.I think the bigger question is why are you and your friend operating your boats in such a manner that it could be an issue?!?! I,for one, will never know how my boat would react to such handling at such speeds since, one,I like my boat and(usually)the people in it,and two I dont have the extra funds to keep repairing issues from operating in such a manner.I would suggest at this point a boaters safety course. And please.could you kindly boat nowhere NEAR Ohio or kentucky.

If you are doing something that makes you think you are going to sink your boat stop doing it.

It is more likely that you will throw someone out of the boat than flip it or hit another boat, that would cause it to sink.

Recreational Boating Statistics - United States Coast Guard

PRIMARY CONTRIBUTING FACTORS OF
ACCIDENTS & CASUALTIES 2009

Sharp Turn: 50 accidents, 4 deaths, 45 injuries.

Yes, you can flip it. Yes, you or your occupants can die. It happens every year. Sharp turns is actually higher up the list than I thought it would be.

More dangerous than flipping is ejecting the driver or a passenger out, then having them get caught up in the prop. Happened here recently, the person didn't make it. My take - find another way to get your kicks. Too many people on the water that can get hurt from your actions.

Is this is very large lakes because I just go to a nice small lake one of the cleanest in the WORLD.. Newfound Lake, NH and sometimes it's as smooth as glass.. well until I make some serious waves. But I know of how you say you can be ejected but usually I brace myself (as do my passengers) and the boat almost makes a pocket in the water, giving the illusion that the waterline of the lake is higher than the boat, but the boat is in motion so it never comes in. If I handle too hard I just ventilate so It limits me. The lakes isn't packed either so other boats aren't a problem. Just wondering what would happen if some tens of gallons of water came in the boat. and if I would "bob" out.

It's harder to flip a Geo than a Mustang, but it can be done. It's harder to flip a "slow" runabout than a 70-90mph boat, but it can be done. Be careful, my friend. You seem to want danger. Get a jetski or something (in a couple of years :D) You are going to hurt someone, and think of how much fun it's going to be to right a capsized boat....or pull it from the bottom of the lake.

Well your only young once right? The kids love boat donuts isn't that what sea-doos and jet-ski's are for? What a boat can't have fun? I've been driving like a madman for 4 years safely and never had anyone get hurt. Everyone knows what is about to happen and it saves a trip to the amusement park.

Just wondering if anyone has had some close calls. Nobody has told me of near flip experiences themselves.. My friend said he has seen the waterline on his side window. I've witnessed this before he was like 90 degress plus 10 for a split second.. then right back to normal. Didn't even take any water in. What can be expected from these sea beasts? Like I said I was looking for responses about taking on water from extreme handling.. low or high speed and what close calls people have had and what massive bilge waters has been pumped. Let's not all act like we just cruise around at 10mph now. Let's hear some real fun SAFE stories. DID YOU RIP IT TILL YOU FLIPPED IT???

Obviously an immature boater with total disregard to the safety of your passengers and others on the water. You say you brace yourself. What if a passenger isn't paying attention and just happens to go over and drowns, you willing to live with that? I'm sure you're all wearing pfd's. Honestly, you make me think of the jerks on their PWC that have to do stunts in a recreational area thinking they're impressing everyone. I will say that I'm glad you're up there and have a short season.

hmmm........sure.....a few hard turns are fun.......but I wouldn't even think of doing any Bat-turns to the point of capsizing.....pleasure boating is one thing......but thrill seeking on a boat is another......just no place for it on the water. JMO

Driving like that in my area would get you put in handcuffs...

Sooner or later you will flip the boat or someone will get thrown overboard and die! Just stupid man! Grow up.

Hey, get a jetski or a little jet boat that is designed for that type of shenanigans.. A pleasure boat is not meant to be operated like that.

wow...well on the more fun side I used to have a seadoo jetski.. in my younger years and not caring for others (18 years old and dumb) I would be driving about 15mph and slam the thing in reverse and the whole ski would submarine it self. Pretty fun to do and fun to watch as the whole ski goes bye bye. It pops up and is good to go.

Never had a small fast boat. Just a big 33 ft boat that my dad would drive like an old man..so no crazy driving stories there. I was on a jet boat once and the guy drove that thing pretty hard. Donuts and such but never took any water on...

Youtube " submarine move" if you are really into watching and wondering what people do to jet boats.

Re: *** rip it till u flip it??? ***

yeah, people die. I hit some wake in a 14 foot AL and it got crazy in a hurry, people on shore said I was airborne...completely. Lost the motor off the back. I wasn't screwing around, just freak event. A couple years back I was out, lake was like glass, some of by brothers friends (40years and older and extremely experienced in off shore racing) flipped their 20+ foot boat about a mile from me, one died, he was a great guy. I almost got run over by a jackass in a speed boat, he put the hammer down, bow came up, he couldn't see me, I had to start my motor and run like hell to stop from being run down. Two years ago on Mille Lacs some idiots "having fun" ran over a friend of mine, all 3 in the boat have permanent injuries.

So yeah, driving crazy is really cool. Kill yourself if you want, just stay a long ways away from me.

I now carry a flare gun, and not just for conventional problems. Anybody driving like that near me who endangers my family will learn it's true purpose.

Finally someone who knows what I'm talking about. Did that guy cut it hard w/ the bow low or did he go into a huge wake of someone elses. That Video is the best!!! Boating is so fun! People seem to not understand when I say people are braced for G-forces and alert. It's all safe fun Why would they have a hull design for handling (floating) if nobody ever did? As for jumps in the air... who doesn't love that too??!!
