Antifreeze research was a significant part of my past.

pure Ethylene Glycol has a freeze point of -83F, however doesnt help much for thermal transfer so it is not good at high ambient temps. Pure water has the highest heat transfer. hence the 50/50 mix which is the best of both worlds for freeze protection and thermal transfer.

Propylene Glycol has a freeze point of -55F and really has crappy thermal transfer properties, however is GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) meaning you could drink it

If you can bum a water tank for the back of the truck you could use the muffs. You just need the bottom of the tank in the truck to be above the impeller on the boat.

Re: Running boat on Muffs

Is it ok to run the boat on Muffs without hose pressure? I mean can I stick a Hose in a 5 gallon bucket and run the boat on muffs that way. The reason I asked is my boat is at an off site storage without water hookups.

Oh if your wondering I havent winterized. Mid 70's and mid 40's this week. Monday it suppose to be 79. I may head to the lake.

Well if it don't get down to 32* and stay there for two days.......Don't worry about it!
If you are done boating this season......Then just pull the plugs on the engine and pull the hoses and let them drain.

Gotta love Arizona.

Check out the ratings on the antifreeze bottle. Pure antifreeze freezes at -10F; 50/50 freezes at -30F; 70/30 freezes at -60F.

Okay,we have two differences of opinion in where it freezes.

Re: Running boat on Muffs

Hey Thalasso, all antifreeze (pure or mixed) will freeze if it gets cold enough. While it is true that a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water freezes at a lower temperature than pure antifreeze, pure antifreeze diluted with whatever residual water remains in the engine block will have plenty of protection, at least here in New Jersey.

Perhaps a much colder areas would need to use some other means of protection, say 70/30, instead of 100% antifreeze. That way if residual water dilutes it, it will still have some protection against freezing.

.

Hey Chris. If you drain the block and then add antifreeze, I dont think you will have enough water left to dilute

Thalasso, I find that after you drain the block, and then pour in antifreeze, more water is then pushed out the drains, before you see the color of the antifreeze. The obvious question is whether there is still residual water in the block, after you drain and fill it with AF. if so, the residual water will hopefully mix with the AF.

In NJ I use straight automotive AF, which I capture in the spring and save for reuse next year. In colder climates, it probably makes sense to make an 80/20 mix of AF and water to use to fill the block. If you get some dilution, then you will achieve a 70/30 or 60/40 mix which has a very low freezing point.

BTW my freezing temps came from Wikipedia. They appear to be the same as what I have seen on the bottls of auto antifreeze. I cannot speak to Scott's info.

I don't think it snows or freezes where he's at........
or the boat? As long as it's not above 5000'.
This is all moot.

You don't think it freezes or snows in N.J.? Better look at the maps. I doubt he would winterize if that where the case. I know i wouldn't waste the money on antifreeze if that where the case. Im in PA and it snows and freezes here.He is a little farther east and north from me. Heck it snows and freezes in N.C. at times. Thats what, just above sea level? ( Figuratively speaking )

Re: Running boat on Muffs

Jeez...What does NJ have to do with Gilbert AZ?  As far as I know it never really gets lower than the 40's there.

He already stated he isn't asking about winterizing and half of the posts are now talking about anti freeze!

The topic of Antifreeze started on post #15, or did i miss something there?

If you read the post #26 Chris1956 says (Quote)In NJ I use straight automotive AF,(un Quote)

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that in post #27 Pierutrus was referring to Gilbert AZ and not NJ
I am sure he was too. That is what prompted my post.

Is it just me but I hate it when someone quotes me in their post and then puts their own words in there like I actually said it! Post #31

So basically, the guy lives in Gilbert, AZ.
He wants to just run his boat on muff's for a few minutes.
The boat is in a different location about 3 hours away. STORED!
I'm pretty sure NJ is a little bit more than a few hours away.

If I'm wrong, then I need to go get my rebate from the IOWA school system!

Somebody is an idiot........

I don't think it's me!:D
