Re: Reinforcing Gunnell

Just a serial number. But from it I'd guess a 1979 Sea Nymph of some sort.

It says
SEA79792067-7R

This boat maybe?
It's the only one listed w/a 78" beam

Re: Reinforcing Gunnell

So based on what I can find this boat is rated for a 100hp.....I found a few posts about this hull, one using a 50hp and saying it was MORE than enough. The other didn't say much, but the boat was rigged with a 70HP.

My question is, is a 65HP Johnson going to be enough for this boat?
I sure hope so because that is what I'm getting, and will have to use for a year or two (unless it is plenty of motor in which case I'd keep it)

I got the thing inside the garage this evening, so tomorrow I have to clean up my mess from the deck/interior removal, and then I can get on with cleaning the rest of it out.

Luckily it passed the garage fit test, and I think I should be fine getting it in the garage even when the motor is on......By getting it in the garage I mean in and out of the way so it's not in my wife's way.:p

Personally I think the 65 is to small,........I think you'll end up having trouble getting on plane,...

On the port side of the transom, isn't that riveted tag the Hull ID#? I would think that somewhere on that hull should be a HID# that would greatly help in determining the year and model.

Re: Reinforcing Gunnell

I believe that hull is older than '79 for a couple reasons...first the side rub rails are the older style seen on boats from the 60s. My '79 Starcraft has the newer rub rail style built into the gunwale edge.

Also that globe style light is not '79 vintage...again 60s motif there.

Also the fact that the hull at the stern is fairly flat across(minimal V) indicates that this is an older hull, as the newer ones have a more pronounced, deeper V.

The last thing that makes me wonder is that the last two numbers in the hull ID are typically the year of manufacture, in your case '67.

Not sure if I am right about all this...but figured I'd throw it out there for discussion. This applies to Starcraft hulls, but since Sea Nymph was started by the same family it may all be the same for the older hulls.

I/d of boat, and gunnell storage

I/d of boat, and gunnell storage

As far as I can tell, they weren't built that long ago. I've been searching for info. I wish someone could decipher the id on this one. The S/N section gets little traffic so I haven't posted anything there.

In looking at newer versions of this boat this one looks very similar. I did find some pictures of a 78 with the same rub rail, steering wheel, and lights.....But I still can't be sure....I guess it's not 'that' big a deal though.

Edit: I found where the cap tags are supposed to be so I'll check those tonight. I'm hoping they are just carpeted over is all.

BTW anyone have ideas on how to utilize the space under the gunnells? I thought I would convert the port side to a rod box, and I'm not sure on the starboard side. Being that this boat isn't that wide, I'd like to utilize that space as much as possible without intruding on the open space in the boat.

I would try and contact SeaNymph, with that # they should be able to tell you something I would think.

From what I've just found Sea Nymph is owned by Lowe and Brunswick Boat Group.

Gluvit, and Contacting Lowe

Gluvit, and Contacting Lowe

I e-mailed them about the serial number. I didn't want to call and bother them with info on a boat built long ago that they had nothing to do with.

How much Gluvit do I need for this boat? I'm in process of searching but there are literally pages of threads about the stuff..... Is 1 quart enough?

Best place to buy? Any reason to not buy off E-bay?

One quart JUST did my 18'. Start from the rear and work forward. Not sure on the shelf life of the stuff in order to answer the ebay question.

Re: Gluvit, and Contacting Lowe

OK one other question....

The transom has what looks like some form of foam or rubber gasket between the transom, and the bottom of the hull. In between the riveted joint.

It's actually sticking out, close to 1/2" in some spots. Do I just trim this back with a razor knife before I apply gluvit?

Any other special attention I should pay to areas receiving gluvit other than a thorough cleaning?

Iboats of course, lowest price guaranteed...even if you see it cheaper somewhere else they will match the price. And help pay for the free forms of course.

Well I will tell you....... gluvit requires Hazmat shipping (ouch) and if you can get it locally and order it from a marina I would do so.

BTW That is a proper HIN and I will guess it is a 1977 I am not sure what the R is for.

Check JMS Marine, best price I could find on Gluvit! I think if you are careful you could swing a quart on your rig. Cheers!

There is a place selling it in the 1 qt size on ebay for $38, plus 14.50 shipping.....I'll check if West Marine carries it because I drive by or near one at least once a month.

If it is indeed a 77' that makes me feel better about putting a 65HP engine on it, as the max HP in 77 appears to have been 85HP.

Deck Hardware, and Trolling Motor issues.

Deck Hardware, and Trolling Motor issues.

Finally, last night I got all the deck hardware removed. The bow floatation foam is being very stubborn but that is what I get, because the rest of it just pulled right out.

When I was done I put the trolling motor on the bow cap to see if it will be long enough......I don't think it will. It's a 48" shaft.

I called Minn Kota, and it turns out you CAN buy just the shaft, and a 60" shaft is $30 plus shipping and handling.

They said it is threaded into the motor, and of course recommended a service center do the work.

Re: Deck Hardware, and Trolling Motor issues.

That is a bummer about the Minn Kota being too short. I believe 54" would be the minimum to keep the prop wet, especially if the bow is bouncing in some waves.

I'm really torn on what to do with my setup, since I have a kicker bracket on one side and will have a swim platform/ladder on the other side which leaves no room for the electric.

The quick-access bow-mounts look pretty good if I go that route.

Did they say it will void the warranty if you switch the shaft on your own?

Re: Deck Hardware, and Trolling Motor issues.

He didn't say it would but I didn't ask either. He did say that the service shops do it pretty regularly though.

My trolling motor is a unique situation. It's new, still wrapped in plastic but otherwise no original packaging. I don't have a receipt for it because it was given to me, by the engineering director I worked with.
It was bought direct from Minn Kota when they first came out, and then sat around the shop not getting used.

So I can't take it back, can't really get warranty work done, and it's not the ideal length, but it was also FREE which 'is' ideal.:)

Once the boat is "done" and I start using it and decide I need or want a transom electric I'd like to get one of those too. I've found situations they would be really nice to have.

EDIT I called D&R Sports in K-zoo and they want $135 just for labor in changing it....So I'm going to order the shaft and give changing the shaft a shot my self.

Re: Deck Hardware, and Trolling Motor issues.

Got another question......I'm fully aware this is the cheap way out and isn't doing things right or how I want. But we all have decisions to make to keep us within budget.

Is there a way to loosen up the steering cable....It's almost frozen. I would LOVE to not have to buy a new one.

Any info on pulling apart the helm and cleaning and greasing it?

I'm going to try saving this steering setup. If not I'm going to look at the possibility of removing the console and converted the boat to a tiller.
Or, at the least I'll move the console back a little for a longer front deck. (since I'll have to buy a new cable I just buy a shorter one.)
