I guess I just wasn't looking in the right places. That is a very good price.

Stripping old carpet glue, and Scrubbing is in my future.

Stripping old carpet glue, and Scrubbing is in my future.

Finally got everything out of the hull. There is a bunch of carpet glue residue. It looks like in some places they used some liquid nails type glue.

Also there is a orange coating. I hate to call this paint because it really doesn't seem like it is. Maybe it's some sort of protective "stuff" the factory sprayed.

Anyhow I'm all ears on ideas for removing the stuff on the sidewalls and prepped it for paint....Actually I'd like to just carpet the sides, but I definitely want a good clean flake free surface to glue the carpet too.

Other than that I'm ready to scrub things up and wait for some Gluvit to get here.

Tomorrow is going to be a cleaning up my mess in the garage, and outside day.

Here is how she sits now.

Wow that is a lot of orange on the side of the hull. Is that adhesive for vinyl?

The stuff I have leftover from my vinyl is real tough to remove, and since the aluminum is only so thick I opted to leave it alone rather than thin out my hull with a wire wheel.

The longitudinal stringers are weird compared to the two lengthwise stringers on the Starcraft hulls. You could do smaller sections on the deck if you wanted storage with hatches. Not bad, just different.:)

Yeah I wouldn't know myself out trying to remove that stuff. I had adhesive for vinyl all over mine. I hit it quick with a wire wheel on a grinder and glued new vinyl over it. If you're using carpet I'd be even less worried about it.

I think all that orange is some sort of adhesive that was used back in the day.

Someone also used what looks like some liquid nails in a couple spots too.
I feel the same way about the wire wheel, so I'm leaning towards sanding down any loose areas and then wiping down with acetone and calling it good enough.

Before I saw those stringers I was planning on some in-floor rod storage, but that's not going to work on this one...

I'm going to move the starboard console back about a foot so that I can have a longer front deck. At least that's the plan.

Re: Stripping old carpet glue, and Scrubbing is in my future.

Major decision time. I need to make it in the next week or two.

Tiller or single console.
Based on the fact it's 17' long, and only 78" wide, I'm leaning towards tiller. Cost really isn't an issue because the money I spend to convert to tiller will be about the same amount of $$ spent buying a new steering system.

Any thoughts?

I just do not get the whole tiller thing with a boat over say about 15'. But there certainly seem to be tiller enthusiasts like Teamster.

X2...

I have had a few tillers and they were great, 4, 6, 8, 10 hp is what I have run. Perfect on the back of a 12 footer. My last one was a 25 on the back of my 14'. It was awesome, pushed the boat to 30 mph (definitely didn't want to go any faster than that), just great for that boat.

I will say that for long runs in that boat I really wish I had a console, especially when I was running in rough water. It's just kinda hard on the body a little being in "tiller position" vs. "driving position", ya know? And for trolling, man that was tough! Holding a tiller in one hand while tending a rod in the other was really difficult (I often times fish alone).

If I had your rig Lon, I'd definitely go back with the dual console. But, if you have nixed that plan, side console for sure buddy.

Have fun!:)

It's all about boat control,...

It's easier to follow tight contours back trolling than it is forward trolling,..

I forward troll on the Great Lakes and go backwards on inland lakes,....

And the lack of a console opens up the space to give you more room,....

A Ranger 620 Tiller with a 175 Merc ProXS and a 9.9 four stroke kicker would be my dream machine,.....

Nothing to it Jas,...

I fished as a co-angler in Detroit in 2007 and found myself fishing with a pro in a Ranger 620 Tiller,...We ran from Detroit Metro Boat Lauch down near Bass Island I think it was called,...We were still in MI waters, But the Toledo skyline was easy to see,....

Is that considered a long run??

Heck yah that's a long run! One I'd sure want a steering wheel for;):D

Got any ideas what to do about the splash well?

Got any ideas what to do about the splash well?

Maybe look at some tiller boat pictures to get some ideas,..

I'd almost have to see it in person to have any real thoughts,...

Does the ID plate give a horsepower rating for that boat in a tiller??

I will admit that dual consles can be nice when your running a bunch on miles on a cold spring morning,....

Re: Stripping old carpet glue, and Scrubbing is in my future.

Most newer boats have a deeper V, and the transom drops down further where the motor is. Then the splash well is much lower, and much smaller.

I think I'm just going to leave the one console in, and then hunt down a windshield from a single console boat.

The room would be nice, but I'll mostly be fishing by myself or with one other person. It won't be three until my boys are a little older.

In that case, I will lower the current splashwell that is in there, and try and build in some jump seats. Like this.Targa-V-18-Combo_img5573_700_800x533.jpg

Sounds like teamster is converting to a helm boater:D

I agree, my 12 footer has no protection at all running a tiller, and I really appreciate the shield from bugs and wind on my SS.

I vote for a small side console or a small center console. Either way you get protection and comfortable seating. And a small console is great for putting gauges on, or marine band radio, fish finder etc.

That's what I'm going for on mine. I installed two regular jump seats and will be building a box between them.
