Re: Musky livewell

Yeah, I see what your talking about.
The two things I don't like about putting the live well off to the side where the port console is/was is the balance of the of the boat across the beam and seating arrangement.
I just started since the weather broke and have to finish the demo first. Lots of thinking  and measuring to do.

After taking some measurements, at this point anyways, I think I am back at putting it under the front deck.
I was going to avoid that route because I wanted to put under deck bow rod storage. Problem is I need at least 7'6 if not 8' of rod storage, and I think that is too much for a boat that is barely 17' long.

Re: Musky livewell

I prefer having the live well width ways at the back of the boat,.....It gives the fish the best possible ride,...

Of course that is when tournament fishing and the safe live release of the fish is a big deal,..

I probably would do that except one problem....I don't have a built in fuel tank, and it's going to be a tiller.
I wouldn't be able to have a fuel tank and batteries, and then a livwell, and still be able to operate the boat.

by built in tank, I mean in floor tank.

progress

progress

Finally some decent progress. Built a new bow area board to reinforce that area, and make installing lights, and trolling motor an easier/more solid affair.
And cut a new brace that matches the factory one I took out. Both out of Marine plywood (I had a few small pieces laying around)

Also got most of the paint stripped off on the starboard side.

And, got the splash well out, and the transom board out. Luckily I was able to get most of it out in once piece. This is going to make it MUCH easier to make a pattern!!
Later today I'm going to make that pattern, and cut my new transom boards.
I may also work on shortening the splash well.

My new goal is the end of March. If I don't make it my world won't end, but I'm going to shoot for it.

Prop advice

Prop advice

I NEED A PROP RECOMMENDATION

65hp Johnson. (73') It currently has NO prop.
Boat is right at 17' long, Bottom at the stern has a very shallow V. Tiller operated.
I have a set of automatic trim tabs, that are spring loaded. They are approximately 8" wide but only protrude from the boat about 5" or so.

Corrosion??

Corrosion??

I need some help here guys.

Specifically what you did to "fix" corrosion. I found a few places on the transom.
I'm comfortable with not having them welded, or adding more aluminum, but I'm not comfortable doing nothing.

Any ideas?

I was thinking of filling the pits with JB Weld.

Oh yea, and ideas on Prop's would be great too.:)

Re: Corrosion??

You could rivet in a new patch of good aluminum if it's bad, or just hit it with a wire wheel and paint over it to protect it.

iboats has a prop selector, maybe post a new thread in the "props" forum for good advice.

Re: Corrosion??

Post up a shot of it Lon, sos we can take a look, eh!:)

Well, I just tried. I'm sure it's probably my skills are lacking, but I couldn't get a decent photo.
EDIT That actually turned out better than I thought it did. That's the worst spot.:(

I did measure my aluminum thickness on the transom and it looks like it is .110 according to my calipers.
I would say the worst spot is close to 1/2 way through, and is about the size of a pencil eraser, the others are less than 1/4 through. Maybe 1/8. But bigger-about the size of a quarter.Picture 040.jpg

Re: Yikes

I think you are going to be aok, no sweat. I am thinking a quick wire brush, scrub with vinegar/water, etching primer, primer, and some paint to protect it. The other guys may chime in with some other thoughts though.

Transom boards

Transom boards

One other thing.

Given the option of Spar Varnish, or POLY resin which would you guys choose?

Also any local sources carry the Z/C primer?

Re: Transom boards

Poly resin is useless unless you add glass to it. It will crack and peel. Epoxy resin can be used without glass.

Re: Prop again

Sounds like I'll start with a 17p prop.

BTW I NEED SOME SERVICE MANUAL INPUT

Would you buy one of the universal Seloc manuals, or a manual for a year newer engine and 5HP more.
My engine is a 73 65hp 3cyl Johnson. I found an original OMC service manual for a 74' 70hp 3cyl Johnson.

Go for the Universal, or the OMC Service manual for the 74' 70HP?
