Re: seven_magnum's 76 Starcraft Islander 221 rebuild

I will have to check out that SEM paint in the morning. It seems highly regarded around here, and if the price is right I will go with that! I am not stripping the entire hull, but I did the joints and rivets below the water line. I want the gluv-it to really do it's job there. I didn't think putting it over old flaking paint and gobs and gobs of 5200 would be a good idea!

I do have a question. I remember reading in another thread about the lapstraking causing leaks in the early hulls. I belive it had something to do with the flexing of the hull and no relief hulls for the water to go in and out of. I read that this was fixed later by adding a hole in at the stern and at the bow of each lapstrake. Does anyone know anything about this? I can't find the thread now, but I will try and dig it up. I remember the conversation started because of someone sealing this area up tight. Right now, my lapstrake doesn't have any holes. The keel has one hole at it's deepest area, but that is it. Now Im off to bed! I just finished the prep for gluv-it and i need some sleep!

I thank everyone for your help!

That was a big flip, MD. Sounds like you owe the crane guy a beer or two. After he flips her right side up, of course. :p

I'd avoid the Gluvit on the outside as it kinda runs a drips as it dries which will make for a rough looking paint job.

I think you will smoke me, my help is hit and miss also!!! Next ten days in Kentucky for work is gonna bring me to a stand still. Looking good and I like the flip. Keep it up.

Also I will be using Viper Grip self etch check it out

Re: seven_magnum's 76 Starcraft Islander 221 rebuild

I haven't logged in for a while, but I have been making progress. I wound up coating the outside of the hull on the rivets and seams with Gluv-it. It did run a bit, but I sanded them pretty well and it looks decent. You will probably be able to see them a bit if the light is right, but I'm not going to be to concerned about that. Im just glad for the little bit of extra leak protection! I put two coats on everything, and a few areas I wanted to be extra sure about I used a bit more! Long story short, I need another gallon of gluv-it for the inside! (It better not leak!)

I bought a gallon of SEM Self etching primer and shot that on. I am impressed with this stuff. It went on easily and seems pretty durable.

Now the problem- I have a 2k high build epoxy primer I wanted to shoot over the SEM primer. (Macropoxy if your wondering.) I tried to shoot it out of my 1.8mm hvlp primer gun but it's not happening. I messed with the gun for a while but gave up. I ordered a 2.5mm setup for it and It should come in the next day or two. If all goes as planned, I should have the paint on the bottom complete by the end of this weekend. In the mean time, I am paying a bit of attention to my trailer. I am replacing the keel rollers, bow stop and getting rid of those goofy roller bunk contraptions that are on there now and replacing with plain carpeted bunks.

On a side note, I am also fixing up an old project boat I have had for some time now and hope to have it out for sale to help fund this project. Somehow I keep selling boats, but the number in the yard never seems to change? Is there a cure for MBS?

Re: seven_magnum's 76 Starcraft Islander 221 rebuild

Im finally making some progress on the paint Job. I got the 2.5mm gun and guess what- I got clumps out of it too! I called Sherwin Williams up and they told me to thin it more, up to 25% (Macropoxy) I thinned it pretty hard and just finished putting my second coat on tonight! The first coat dried for 24 hours and it turned out great! It's some tough paint. Tomorrow I am going to scuff the hull and shoot a coat of Acrolon 218 and let that dry for a day too. Sunday I will shoot the last coat and get ready to flip it right side up again! I can't wait!

Now I have a dilemma- I have been planning to get a rebuilt motor to drop into this girl. I found a deal on craigslist for a 22' glasser that the guy needs rid of. He sent me some pictures and everything looks to be in half decent shape. The motor is a 6cyl. mercruiser 165 with fresh water cooling. I asked for some history and this is what he told me.

Boat was kept in indoor storage for 12 years. He somehow acquired it two months ago and needs it off his property. I asked if it runs and he said he didn't know, he would have his son try and start it. (He's disabled and can't get in the boat himself.) He emailed me back and said it wouldn't start, he thinks the battery isn't any good in it. If it sat for 12 years I guess I would think so too. He said the engine is free, his son turned it over with a wrench to check for me. It has the MC-1 outdrive on it like my islander I guess I could use for parts? It looks a little rougher than the one I am working with now.

It is on a trailer that appears to be home built from a house trailer or camper frame. It looks like I could give it to my pop to make a good firewood hauler if we put a deck in it. The glasser would probably go on craigslist for free, and if it didn't move there it would find the dump.

What would you think a fair price on the rig would be?

http://scranton.craigslist.org/boa/3074191066.html

I am heading up toward Allentown tomorrow for a big picnic and I could go the extra hour to take a peek at this pretty easily.

What says the Starmada? Should I stick with the plan of a reman 250, new manifold, risers, and starter program or would you look into this rig?

Oh, and I see some people have a never ending love for PL. I found this stuff at Home Depot, but I don't know what seems to be so popular? there were about a dozen kinds of PL adhesive to choose from!

Many thanks,

Foster

Rotted glasser, unknown engine, $100 maybe? He won't go for it though.

Here's the PL version you want...

It actually now comes in a new blue tube, I buy it by the pallet these days:D

Re: Well, I did it!

What's the deal with this manifold and riser package? It seems cheap compared to what I have been finding. If these are ok I will probably snatch them up.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-cylinder-..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item20c6bf38d9&vxp=mtr

Good to see you got the paint gun working and the finish is turning out good for you.

On the donor, since a seller can never be trusted (exceptions are few and far between - like me ) and the chances of the motor starting to check for water in the oil, Jason is on the money for buying a pig a poke.

I would ask over in the Mercruiser forum about the manifolds. A forum search pulled this up http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=549175&highlight=barr and the eBay item includes the riser so the price is real good for a new Barr kit.

Great work flipping the beast. I think you'll be happy with the se primer and high build epoxy primer route. I used Interlux VC performance epoxy for the bottom paint. As tough as nails but meant for freshwater trailered boats. Not sure where your boat will get used but though I would mention it as it was one product I'm really happy with.

Excellent work on everything... You are making incredible progress in a short period of time.

Re: Well, I did it!

Re: Well, I did it!

I need some input on a possible 4.3 package.

It sounds like a decent deal, but one red flag came up when I called about it.

It's a 4.3 mercruiser with all the trimmings (Gimble assy, outdrive, ect.) and I was told it's an excellent running engine, with minor outdrive damage. The skeg is apperently partly broken and it needs a new prop. (Propshaft is probably bend too would be my guess, but who knows.)

The problem? It came out of a boat that hit an underwater object and sank!!

The owner said the boat was recovered, fluids drained and replaced and started back up. Supposedly it still runs fine. It was sunk in fresh water so I know that helps a bit. The accident happened last year, and it's been sitting in his garage since then.

I guess I don't have to say what Im worried about on this one! He is asking $1200 for the engine package. It's in his garage on a chain hoist right now. Is there any way to test something like this out and be able to buy with confidence? Obviously I would want to run it but I have no idea where problems may be hiding. (I guess if it runs that is a good sign!) He says it is a great running engine, fired right up after it sunk and it has very little corrosion. He is sending me pictures so I can take a look at it.

I am really trying to find a no B.s. boat with a running motor right now, but they aren't easy to come by this time of year it seems. It's starting to look like I should just bite the big bullet an buy the new 165, manifold and riser, starter, waterpump and do what I can to get the rest of the system going.

Any help would be appreciated! I am at a loss right now it seems. Im going back out to sand on the hull some more and hopefully something will turn up.

Re: Well, I did it!

A lot is going to be obvious by physical appearance alone. Is there a lot of rust on things that would normally be dry and inside the boat? Was the distributor emptied out or is it still full of water? or inside the carb?
Engines can be easily started in a driveway sitting on some blocks, with water to the thermostat housing, a battery, couple of battery cables, and some jumper wires.

Price wise, who knows. What is the year of the package? Any engine and drive serial numbers? BEWARE believing what the seller tells you. Sellers want to make your money theirs, and will leave out information, or "mis-represent" a fact or two now and then.

I just got some pictures from the guy. It looks like the lower unit on the outdrive is pretty beat up!

I will ask about the year. I did not get any of that kind of info when they emailed me.

I thank you for your help! Im lost with this kind of thing.

Re: Well, I did it!

Re: Well, I did it!

I just got in from sanding my boat on lunch break. There sure are some perks to having your boat at work!

I saw Jas's reply on Magnumdeke's thread about the other engines. What do you think about a 3.0 pushing an islander? I would think it would be fine for fishing, but I am also going to want to do some tubing/wakeboarding/waterskiing and it seems the consensus is it works but you can't have a lot of people on the boat. i would like to have 4-6 on the boat and still be able to drag someone behind.

My next question- how would the extra weight of a sbc affect the islander? I have been finding quite a few 302's and 305's. I don't know if I would want to go with a 302 because #1 its a ford! (Kidding!) and #2 I hear parts are hard to get a hold of with them. It seems a little underpowered from what I have been finding too, everyone I found is listed as 188hp? Seems like a lot of extra weight for not much Hp gain.

I would like to keep this as fuel efficient as possible but still have some backbone when I need it.

Here are some examples of what I have been finding

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/boa/3072124446.html
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/boa/3022780619.html
this one is a little far away, but I would go for it for a decent running engine
http://wilmington.craigslist.org/boa/3040981473.html
this one has a 4.3 for $1500 says complete
http://annapolis.craigslist.org/boa/3024038996.html

Heres two on ebay I was looking at

http://www.ebay.com/itm/mercruiser-..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item1c282ed458&vxp=mtr

Other than these, Im not finding much. Hopefully something will turn up. What do you guys think?

I thank you for your help.

Re: Well, I did it!

The 3.0 would be a total turd. Forget that idea. A V8 would not be at ALL out of place in that boat. I would recommend against a Ford motor due to them having gotten out of the marine business over a decade ago and parts support thing things other than the short (or long?) block is going to be more sparse.

Yah, sorry about that:redface:

Based on what you mentioned there pass on the 4 cylinder engines. I think you have found a few nice V6'sthere. Though, if you can help it you'll be better off finding a donor boat as it'll have all the pieces you need all at once. Piecing everything together can end up being a budget buster, ya know.

Re: Well, I did it!

Re: Well, I did it!

No Problem Jas! I had to chuckle a bit when I saw that. it seems these 76 islanders are a popular boat these days!

I just found a guy about an hour away that has 2 of the merc 165's for sale. He took them out of a Bertram they rebuilt and replaced them with new engines. He says he doesn't want to scrap them, he would rather they went to someone who can use them. They don't have oil pans and he removed the heads from them. They supposedly ran well when they used them and were taken out when they replaced the transom in their Bertram. He said one had a valve that looked burnt but other than that they were ok. He said they could probably use a head job, but only have about 400 hours since they were rebuilt last. He said he would like a few hundred each for them and he would through in the gimble assemblies because he has no use for them. He also has the mc-1 outdrives for them but would like $400 each. I don't think there is anything wrong with my outdrive so I would be more inclined not to take them unless he wanted to make a deal...

This would put me back on the track of rebuilding an engine myself and plunking in. I have a good lead at a local machine shop so I can get quality work done for cheap. It sounds like these might just need a head job, new gaskets and seals and bee good to go. Obviously I would want to measure them up before I did any of this, but It seems like it may be a good path to a quality motor.

My biggest concern would be if they were bored out excessively. I believe I saw pistons available up to .060 oversize. Being they were rebuilt before I wouldn't be surprised to see them already .030 oversize with polished cranks and honed connecting rods with oversize pistons and bearings. I would be tempted to pick the better of the two blocks, buy an appropriately sized rebuild kit and just freshen her up a bit. (New rings, bearings, pistons if a bore would be needed.)

What do you think? I do have a soft spot for the old 250 and it would be a lot less work than a 4.3 to get to fit. I have really tall floors in my islander compared to Jasoutside or Magnumdeke's islanders, and I have been thinking I would have to cut the stringers in the back and fab up some other supports to clear the width of the 4.3. the 250 would just drop straight in.

Who knows? I guess if he wants to make a deal on the package I would go with it and see what I can put together.
