3 things.... I did a bunch of grinding in summer..... Vegas summer 110-120 deg.
1. Cut tyvex into long sleeve knickers, like Daisy duke almost. The worst is the forearm when you are crawling around. Levi's will breathe better than tyvex and any heat you can evaporate the better.
2. Get a pop-up of some sort to keep shade. When done just throw it in the boat when you clean up.
3. Gallons of water!

Just catching up to this thread . . . I'm aboard for this. :)

I haven't read through all of the posts . . . mostly looks at the pictures.

Rebuilding a boat is enough work, but a boat and motor . . . that's being crazy busy.

froggy1150 i never thought of that. I wear Levi’s and a pair of military issue beauville boots under it every time I’ve been grinding anyways. Lol
tpenfield welcome aboard! Rebuilding both the boat and motor has been keeping me busy to say the least. Especially since I decided to do a repaint on the motor. I’ve been soda blasting everything to prep for new paint/glyptal. Add that to the fact that we’re just now starting to get back to work with the Army, my project time is soon to be limited to virtually just the weekends. Only reason I decided to do the motor as well was bc of the ridiculously low hours for its age.

I managed to get most of the transom/float boxes done. I’d estimate I got about 5-6 hours left of grinding before she’s ready for a good scrub and new wood/glass. I’m hoping the weather plays nice with me this week so I can hammer it out in the few hours I have of sunlight after work every day. After I get this grinding done, I gotta work on patching a few booboo’s I made in the hull before I can start adding new anything back into it.

Almost done with the grinding. Got a little bit left of the old tabbing for the stringers, the port side float box, and the lower half of the transom. I’m thinking I may just be able to get it done today. Thank God. Also, finally managed to get ahold of RDS Aluminum’s supplier so I could get my fuel tank ordered. Ran me about $600 for an OEM tank to be custom built and shipped. That stung a little bit, but at least I know it will fit. If I manage to get this sucker finished up today, I’m going to try to clean it up real well tomorrow if the weather’s nice. After that, it’s finally time to start patching the booboos and getting the new wood/glass in.

It is a nice feeling to get the grinding done! Only problem is you just think you are done lol! Ask me how I know! Well at least anything from here on out will be minor.

Glad to hear you got the tank ordered, you will be glad you did that later. Safe, clean and one that fits counts for a lot in my book.

You are finally getting to the fun part, seeing it start to go back together is the rewarding part!

You know you could have always taken the braces out of the way while you grind . Then re-install when you start glassing ..
A little to late I assume .. :watermelon:

sphelps hindsight is always 20/20. Lol. I know the boat “sunk” a bit on the trailer, so I’m gonna have to get the cap back on then jack the boat off the bunks and lay it back down. Figure I could get it back in place then build a proper frame. I didn’t manage to get the grinding done today . archbuilder you don’t lie when you say there’s always more. This whole grinding process is starting to feel an awful lot like a childhood song I used to always sing.... “this is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friends.” Lol

Grindhog Day .. ..
At some point you reach a level of grinding “ Zen “ You just except the grinder as a part of your appendages ..
‘The best thing I did was buy a full face respirator for grinding . Worth every penny ...

archbuilder That is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time. The fact you dropped that reference is awesome. Bill Murray is legit one of my top 3 favorite actors. And for real this grinding is about like that movie, I wake up excited to think that I’m gonna be done and moving on....just to find that it looks like the 5 hours I put in the day before just seems to have been magically undone by a stroke of the “backspace” key on a keyboard.
sphelps the full-face mask I bought is legitimately one of the best purchases I ever made.

sphelps I can’t decide if it’s the restoration or not that is making my hair fall out and what’s left of it to turn gray. Between the project, the weather, the Army, and my kids, it’s a solid toss up.

I still have yet to make any progress on the grinding. Between the crazy SeaTac weather we’ve been having and being back at work, I haven’t been able to get any time to finish the little bit of grinding I have to do. As far as grinding goes, I only have about 1/4 of the transom, the port-side float box, and the edges where the deck will be tabbed in. That being said, when I’m able to find time to grind, it’s raining. If the weather is nice enough for me to get out and do it, I’m working. This has to be what hell feels like. I can see the end of the grinding in sight, I have everything I need to start putting it back together, but I can’t seem to make any headway on the project. Lol. I’m thinking that if the rain keeps up, I’m just going to cut the pieces for the transom and get them glued together so I don’t have to wait as long to slap the transom in. Thinking I may get the stringers cut as well while I’m at it. Maybe cut them a bit bigger than they need to be so at most all I’ll have to do is trim them down when I get ready to get them installed.

On the plus side of everything, I finally got the tooling in that I needed to start rebuilding the gearcase. I also got the fuel tank in today. Happy that got here before I got done with the grinding. I’m chomping at the bit so bad to start getting all the new stuff in that I probably would have made the fuel compartment too small. Lol

I’m hoping to get the stringers/transom installed soon so I can start removing all the gelcoat and fix any damage to the hull before the floor starts going in. Figure this way I’ll have access to the inside of the hull if need be. I also decided to change it up a bit. Instead of using gelcoat, I decided to go with Alexseal. I know it’s a topside paint, but I’ve read many reviews of people who did their whole boat up in Alexseal and had no issues with it after leaving their boat in the water for 1-2 weeks on end. I figure since this girl is going to be a trailer queen, it should be just fine. On top of that, I saw a video from boatworkstoday on YouTube where he did a side-by-side of Alexseal rolled out and rolled and tipped. The results of rolling alone were enough to sway me. It’s also salt, water, oil, and UV resistant, sandable/buffable, and pretty durable. Repairs are easy enough on it as well. I also liked the fact that it has a much longer working time than gelcoat and will be easier for me to roll out the old design with nice results. Only downside is that it’s not exactly the cheapest.

I would guess the Alexseal will be fine as long as it isn't in the water more than a week or two.

I think I would glue the two pieces of the transom together in the boat....that way you know it will conform to the fiberglass.

Anyway you can rig up a tent? May not work there....sure as hell wouldn't here, it usually rains sideways with our wind lol! Hang in there it is a jog, not a sprint! The turtle usually wins the boat rebuild race....as frustrating as it is sometimes!

archbuilder the rain acts close to the same here. And the small section of glass that the transom mounts to is flexed outwards right now from the lack of support. Fiberglass is malleable/flexible enough that it should conform to the new transom just fine as long as it is clamped together tight. And given I’m not gonna have the boat in the water longer than a day or two, I figured the Alexseal would do just fine as well. I liked the idea of being able to apply it with great results without having to spray it. That and it’s salt-resistant. With a lot of waterways out my way being salt or brackish water, I figure it’d give me a bit of benefit over gelcoat. That and it’s more water-resistant.

I managed to get a blessing in disguise yesterday. Last week, I got exposed to somebody who had a positive result on a COVID test. Yesterday, I got told that anyone who was around him needed to be tested and had to spend 72 hours in quarantine. Luckily enough, my test came back negative but I’m still stuck at the house. They never told me that I couldn’t be out front of my house, just that I couldn’t leave. So since the weather is supposed to be nice the next couple days, I’m finishing the rest of this grinding and scrubbing the hull. I just got it out of the garage and I’m about to start hammering it out. Hopefully I can finally post some actual progress. This project has been on “standby” for far too long. Bout to start burning rubber and getting this bad boy back together soon. Pics will be soon to follow. Wish me luck.

Glad to hear your test were negative! We had someone in my office building that tested positive last week. Fortunately I wasn't there the day she was in (company next to me, not in my office) and neither was my staff. Spooky times. Hopefully you can make some productive time out of it!

archbuilder I definitely took advantage of the time off. Lol. I still have tomorrow and Friday on quarantine, then I get my whole weekend to myself. Don’t gotta be back at work til Monday.

So I can finally say that the major grinding is done. I’m sure I’ll have to bust it out again here or there, but I’m happy I finally got the time to hammer it out. Definitely made more work for myself in a few spots, but I have plenty of glass and resin so it’s no biggie. Hoping to go through and remove every last bit of hardware on her tomorrow, and then she’s getting a good bath. Gonna hit her with some Dawn and a scrub brush, then give her a good pressure wash. I plan to hammer it out early so she can spend the next couple days in the sun drying out really well. I’m hoping to get a template done up for the new transom by Sunday so I can get it cut and ready to go in next weekend. I am so friggin happy that I can finally start getting around to the fun stuff soon.
