sound deadener under the bow?

a Q for those who have restored closed bow boats:

on the 65 Holiday, SC used some sort of material between the oak bow-support ribs and the tin closed-bow skin, i assume for padding/support/sound deadening. it appears orig was some type of fiberboard. what have y'all used for this? i want to be sure the bow skin is well supported since i may be walking up there. thanks!

Ya know what I did? Well, I pulled out all that foam that was in between the support stringer and alum skin.

Then I ran a bead of PL along both sides of the support. I'm really glad I took the time to do it as it really firmed up that bow deck nicely.

While a tad bit different, my islander bow deck is supported with plywood from the factory, but my 74 chieftain is cribbed with wood similar to 2x4's, Personally i think the cribbed method is better than the sheet of plywood

thanks guys. sorry i been MIA for a bit.....big trial at work, then flu, then hacked open my achilles tendon with some expanded metal mesh. hopefully i can get the Starchief side panels done this weekend

You know that oops is still gonna blame a tinny for wacking your achilles, barato. Careful climbing in and out - might reek havoc with the tendon.

On the bow padding or whatever SC had in mind, my Nassau has thin strips of styrofoamy type stuff between the wooden supports and the AL bow cap. My stuff is still OK, so I haven't looked for a replacement.

I used the sill foam that they put between a studded wall and the foundation.

nah, it warn't the tin....if so, the cut would have been neater and closer to sterile. it was the grill i use to cook fish....... and wound was starting to get infected so now my doc has me on Antibiotics of Doom, and devil take the intestinal flora worse, no beer for a week......how am i supposed to work on an old boat in hot weather without beer?

Jas, the problem with the padded suit is that it gets a mite warm down here. but jeans would have stopped this one. the good news about how often i injure myself is that i heal fast due to so much practice. you can hardly see the scars from when i fell on the roll of barbed wire last summer........

on the boat.....my oak is in great shape so i'm going to just reuse that for the support. i like Jas' solution to fill the gap altho the sill foam is also a great idea.

I plan on doing something similar with the PL.... I was going to take some of the left over "doublebubble" insulation that I used under the tin on my roof of my pole barn in the cabin areas to help with reflecting heat out....
I Know it sure helps in my dads pole barn, hence why I did it as well.

SMG--are you talking about Reflectix(looks like 5/16" bubble wrap with mylar on both sides)? i'm debating putting it into the cabin roof on the starchief for the same reason. did you leave an air gap between the roof and the insulation?

Yup.. Not sure if it was that name brand but the same thing yes.. "Reflective insulation double bubble foil on both sides - Reflective insulation - reflects 97% of the radiant energy that strikes its surface " We just rolled it out over top of the trusses and put our tin roof right over the top. Soooo, I'm gonna say no airgap I guess.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know jack or squat about boats, which is why I'm diving headfirst into a restoration project. I'm funny like that, ask me about my RX-7 hobby sometime.

Anyhow, the entire reason I was going to chop up the bow of my Starcraft was because the aluminum up there didn't really seem like it could support any weight. Now, I see that it most likely had some factory reinforcement and it all starts to make sense.

In the interest of never again having to mess with it, I was thinking of bending some aluminum struts and riveting or welding them into the boat, but using some wood would be a lot faster and with the right sealant on it, would be a 10 (or more) year fix.

Thanks for the ideas. Now I'm just going to think about how to tie any framework into the bow of the boat so it can support me.

look at any closed bow boat, cabin or Holiday. they'll all have some wood reinf under the bow, mostly tied into the structure of the tin with angle brackets and machine screws. i think i have a good pic lookin up at it in my Starchief resto thread. but let us know if you'd like some closeups of the factory reinf.
