I JB welded then ground these down..There was so much damage it wasn't funny..

Then had this nice perfect sized piece of 16 ga aluminum..So I will use this as reinforcement to the area..

Best transom I've seen all week :)

Extra aluminum panel looks good too.

Thanks 64...
I sure did! It will get etching primer and I'll paint the whole stern plate and all.

Re: SS 180 transom question

I drilled the big bolt holes for the motor mounts way oversize and then sealed completely and installed some homemade aluminum bushings....actually have to hammer them in....great fit....no exposing wood after the seal job..... I actually drilled all the holes for the knee brace as well before hand, but left them oversize....no bushing there. I think the holes that people drill to match the sheet aluminum is where they set themselves up for a rotten transom sooner that expected.bob

Re: SS 180 transom question

So here is the frankenstiened panel with holes drilled.
I attached in all four corners, then drilled out from inside the boat.
I tell you, I wish winter would get here so it cools down into the 80's.
The garage is a sweatshop, it's so hot in there little kids should be making Nike's.

Oh..lesson from shop class that hit me upside the head..PILOT HOLES KEV!!! (they kinda help ya think?)

are you installing the top portions of the wood transom??? I made mine full height and width from solid pieces....... I would think since the wood is through bolted below onto the knee brace as well as up top and all along the side, that a full "U" coverage of the wood on its lower shelf rest isn't that important...a simple 90 degree angle riveted below and angling inwards.....would be enough.....the transom will rest on the horizontal portion of the angle.....and the trough bolts will sandwhich it towards the transom skin.....bob

Hey BJ
Yep, I am also using the "L" shaped separate pcs in each corner if thats what you mean..I was going to IKEA them, lol with holes and dowels to join them..I should have just done the entire transom as a solid unit but ehhhhhh...
I know SC didnt join the corners, but I may throw some gorilla glue on top of the base wood to seal up that joint..

IKEA them

A kit boat! LOL Did you get some meatballs with it? :)

The plate should be plenty strong, Kev. Much better looking than the tin worm holes..

lol..no but I made my own..Only ones I like..100% sweet Italian sausage, egg, Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, brushed in olive oil and baked..Ok, enough Martha Stewart for now..

The BEST part of that alum plate? It was FREE..Our IT guy came to install about 20k worth of vid conference junk in my office and we got this locally to use as a mounting plate (cost $35.00) but turns out he didnt need it so I was all.."Yeah, I'm keeping that" :D

Re: SS 180 transom question

Knee brace JB welded for 2 small cracks, installed last night..
Because this thing leaked like a sieve..I plan on a coat of gluv-it across the entire transom then paint over that.
Now for the question..
Any problems applying gluv it over 5200?

Re: SS 180 transom question

That's a good question, CBK. 5200 cures to a very hard rubbery state and maintains some flexibility. I don't have an answer, but If the area doesn't flex it should work. Just guessin' here.

Re: SS 180 transom question

Well gluv it flexes as well, I am trying to see if they are compatible.
I can always take a scrap piece of alum and put a little smear of. 5200 on it then mix a little bit of gluv it and see what happens!

Re: SS 180 transom question

Just let the 5200 cure for about a week, unless you have fast cure.
