It's called "useless piece best omitted". Seriously though, newer tin boats don't have them, fiberglass boats don't have them, I've eliminated that piece from both my restores. If wood, it's only function is to eventually compress, the plys open up, rot and let water in the boat. Replace it with aluminum plate or starboard as suggested or just leave it off altogether.

Knee brace welding done and "coat-it"epoxy of the hull done. The welding definitely beefed up the braces and fixed the stress cracks. I am very impressed with how the epoxy bonded and how robust it is...wow. Next on the list is to build a new transom and install it. Then i plan to suspend the boat (got a novel way to do this) and prep and paint the hull.

Many choose to do a leak test after the Coat-It/Gluvit cures to make sure there are no remaining leaks, prior to doing paint/prep on the outer/inner hull.

Yes indeed, tomorrow morning I am filling her with water and see if any leaks remain. I do have a practical question, on these old tinnies is it practical to expect absolutely no leaks?
