Re: Starcraft I own, but haven't picked up.........

Thanks for the tip! I didn't do much of the flat hull areas, mostly just the ribs, and no sign of deflection. But I'll look after a bit. Being a '63, the water line & down hull is all fairly stout aluminum. But mama don't want any stretch marks!

Except maybe where my head deforms under a flying frying pan, and I don't want that, outward actions not with standing:facepalm:

Thanks again!

Good luck getting rid of the ugly bedliner stuff... Also, be careful with the 3500 psi... One of the first lawsuits I ever handled was representing a guy who took his airplane in for a paint strip and they blasted it off... The metal completely "stretched" and waffled under the pressure...

Took the words outta my mouth...some guys have sand blasted instead of soda blasted and wrecked hell on their hulls

Re: Starcraft I own, but haven't picked up.........

I checked several areas after it quite raining & no damage evident. Perhaps the rotary nozzle makes it less severe, but I will be careful. It lifts an edge of the liner, I can grab it & it peels off in 4-6" wide sheets.

Won't be back on it tomorrow, but maybe Fri, or over the weekend...

Thanks again, 1 & all!!

Hey JBC, you could open a peanut farm with all those...

If you get most of that bedliner off and are left with the ribs you could try a wirebrush wheel on a drill for the ribs. Fun new project man!

I think the ribs are going to be good, it's the space between each rib, where the hull might distort under the pressure washer that will prove to be a challenge. All I need is for it to lift an edge, then it's less direct pressure. We'll see later this week.

I think the peanuts were growing some funky stuff, but nothing I'd want to cultivate:p

I read thru a thread @ iBoats on building new internal wiring harnesses. I may need to go that route, the motor's wiring is a wreck, esp at the plug or lack there of.

You can get new internal harnesses from ebasicpower.com They have a good selection but are a bit pricey.

Thanks, & yeah peanuts, spray foam & bed liner are not ideal boat rebuilding materials:facepalm:

I won't be making any progress this weekend, but w/ a little luck, I may still get it back in the water sooner then later...

Be sure to find Jasoutside's Jet rebuild thread, changed it quite a bit, but solid boat work, tips & etc will be found there.

Have a great weekend!

Looking good so far, I kinda had a mixture of loose an solid styro, what a mess!!! Hopefully I can pressure wash what i need out as far as residual glue just like you are going after the bed liner, I have a 2500 psi hot water Pwasher at work. Good luck and can't wait to see the results of your washing!!! " kind guinea pig style" LOL sorry!!

Re: Starcraft I own, but haven't picked up.........

Yeah, not so great results, going to have to get the grinder out w/ a wire wheel. Currently it appears an angry raccoon clawed up 90% of the liner on the ribs only. Along the double rivet seams, the transom knee braces, the deep V in the bow, and most of the flat hull areas between the ribs, it didn't really do much other then get my shoes wet:facepalm:

But the spray foam all came off great. An possibly after a good rough up from a grinder & wheel, it will succumb to the pressure washer. The turn for the colder temps doesn't help I don't figure. So back to the drawing board....

JB.... just a thought... have you tried paint stripper? Don't know if it will penetrate that far.... but if you've got some handy and a metal drywall trowel... just a thought man!!!

Watchin' the progress up here!

Hi JC...looks like some progress is better than none...hope you find a way to get rid of that bedliner...seems like a royal pain...

BTW, I had a vision when I saw the packing peanut floatation system...what it would have looked like if the unfortunate catastrophy had ever occured...

Woulda made it easy for the USCG to find...

PS- If I didn't have to use this every other day, I would ship it to you...make fast work outa that liner carp...

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

Well, the new crewman has signed off for the night:
BonnieBleu.jpg

Being a 4month old puppy can be exhausting. 17.5lbs, Catahoula Leopard hound mix, they are the state dog of Louisiana. Leggy & 14" at the withers. Headed to 50lbs+ and 20" +/-.

Now back to the boat building, or there abouts:facepalm::

The bed liner will succumb to a combo of the wire wheel, some epoxy paint stripper, and the pressure washer. I should have that project behind me by the weekend, & start to assemble the plywood seat slats that I cut today. Need a quick screw job to get the panels aligned and ready for coating w/ epoxy. Epoxy the pieces individually, then rough & scuff, assembly, and cover the epoxy coating w/ epoxy paint.

This may end up a 2 seater, I have the swivels, and some seats for patterning. Haven't sold the Admiral on WOG's donor couch, wally world baggie slip covers, and using the old funky for patterns. But working on it.

As for the deck, that will depend on the advice I get for replicating the central stringer that is no longer attached, and based on the spray foam & packing peanuts, it's been gone for a while.... I currently have neither a welder or a metal brake, and limited access to places that might bend & brake a replacement stringer...

Suggestions? My least favorite is to replicate the metal stringer in wood. 1/2", 5/8" or 3/4" about 4.5"-5.5" tall and try to find aluminum 'L's that I can rivet down to the ribs & screw into the wooden stringer.......

As for the motor, I am not going to try & fire it until I have a chance to go thru the manual & do some service 1st. It took awhile to find one, but I finally ordered a manual 9 days ago, shipped, eta unknown.

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

if you do end up going the wood stringer route, Lowes and Home Despot carry 2x2" alum L-channel....think i paid about $13 for 4 ft. with a metal blade in the jigsaw, you can turn out all the alum angles you want for cheap in 15 minutes.

BTW, just looked at your thread on the plyboat. pretty cool, and i see why nothing about resto of a tinnie would faze you.

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

Thanks Barato

The little project to keep me busy for a month or so last summer turned out pretty well, & took about 5weeks longer then a month. Still not to bad though. I intend to get it wet again soon, the water temps here are still a tad low to want to go for a swim. Actually, it's the wading in to launch it that's the bigger hang up. But it did turn out very well. Ken was very helpful, nice guy.....

I just need to get some stuff off my plate & get on the Jet, another week of decent weather, & I may rethink the ply boat re-launch!

Have a great week!

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

Well, it's official, I am losing the battle with the bedliner:

JC 0 ~ Bedliner 2 :(

I can make some headway with:
  1. grinder & wire wheel (but not much, except to ready it for step 2)
  2. really nasty epoxy stripper softens it a tad, but it can be scrapped of in smaller areas
  3. once I get it 'mostly stripped', hit it again w/ the big MF pressure washer....

It will be a process..... Not the quick plan to get it back in the water though....

On a better note, I couldn't work on the hull over the weekend so I fabbed the bench portion of the front set of seats. Filled & sanded last night, sealed topsides tonight. Already have the seat swivels, and seats..... Vinyl & foam will need to be replaced.... For now it may end up a 2 seater.

On the motor front, got the 1696 40ESL manual yesterday, the Type 'C' gear lube shipped yesterday, eta next week, have spark plugs & battery..... Need to go through the rigged wiring & make sense of it....

So as I plod along on the bedliner, I'll putter around a few other odd jobs as well....

Good luck getting over the middle & to the down side of the work week...

Hmmmm. Did you try a stripper with methylene chloride in it? Hard to believe that won't cut it. This has that chemical in it.

Keep plugging away & good luck. Stripping the bottom was the least enjoyable part of the whole project for me.
