Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

I 'think' you have to use the advanced reply & below the window where you type a post, there's attached thumbnails.... You might be able to remove it there. But doesn't bother me, just for info..... Often a 3rd grader, so pix are good, even 2 of the same:)

Same manufacturer, but their 'more' aggressive Epoxy Paint Stripper... Now that is odd, I just went to their website & the stripper I bought isn't listed....... Maybe it's been repackaged & relabeled the KS-3 Premium that you posted. It does have epoxy listed as a paint it will remove........ The can I bought has both red & orange, but is clearly labeled as EPOXY remover.... I printed the MSDS sheet for the KS-3 Premium, and will check it against the one at home......

Anybody want to guess if Aircraft stripper would be better at attacking the bedliner? When I can get through the bedliner, the original cream hull paint comes off too...

It really is paint stripper on a 6"X6" area, give it a few minutes, as soon as it stops bubbling up the little bit it bubbles, scrap it off. Else it starts to collapse & 're-cure'. Then start again. I tried several different plastics to slow the re-cure, and let the stripper chew on the bedliner for a bit longer, but the 4 different I tried didn't do much if anything. Good news is there are no squares of plastic stuck in the re-cured bedliner, so there is that:facepalm:

I'll try to get the bench plank sealed on the bottom tonight, and on Thurs, drop it in place & shoot some pix...

You were right, I didn't look far enough down on the "Advanced" page to remove the thumbnail.

Yup, stripping is an ugly & slow job most of the time. Boring & frustrating. Good you have something else to work on in the meantime to get your mind off it a little.

JCB

man you have got your hands full with the bed liner. this one SC has just about all your nightmares rolled up into one.

did you try the aircraft stripper? you can get it at Azone and they will match the price if you can find it cheaper in your area, it's a rusto product and that stuff has eaten through everything i have put it on and even the stuff that i did not but the splatter got it. just use some excellent chemical gloves though because it will burn your hands and any exposed skin it comes in contact with

I would be surprised if that did not work

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

I'll check a-zone today, the other does soften it, just not enough when it's deeper then 3/32" thick, esp @ rivets and along the edges & rivets in the ribs. If they have a small quart or so I'll certainly give it a shot.

If I could just get the new girl to pull her weight...... She surely has enough energy to give Jas a run for his money! But lacks focus for more then 3sec or so:facepalm: And then she's on to the next thing...... 5min nap to recharge the batteries & back to the mayhem:D

If you can find zip-strip paint striper that will work on bed liner.

Man, that aircraft Rusto stuff is the big nasty, but it worked:

Bedliner after Rusto Aircraft stripper = butter:)

I only got a 3" test square done before the rain came-a-calling.......

The bench plank is still slightly tacky from the 1st top coat, so not much going on w/ it either tonight.

All right! Glad you found one that will work. Some things just need any brand of big nasty to get them off, they're tough.

Hey JBC glad that stuff worked for you. it is nasty stuff no doubt. just remember keep skin covered, wear eye protection and some good chemical proof gloves. I used one i got at Home depot that were blue coated something chemical gloves and never felt a thing. I also used some black chemical gloves that after a bit my hands started to tingle so it was getting through the gloves, not a pleasant feeling.

good luck, now it's time to tip the scales back in your favor

Glad you found the Recipe. JB I know it's a nasty, messy job but better than sand blasting and making more probs.

Yeah, sand blasting presents a whole other set of problems. Esp for my neighbors.

I actually don't care how harsh the stripper is, if it works. But wow, as far as strippers I've used in the past go, and the Kleen-Strip epoxy stripper is pretty harsh, this aircraft stuff is much worse. If you need to be careful & use the correct protective gear in general w/ paint strippers, this stuff almost warrants a full body suit & respirator.... Just cracking open the can gives you mighty powerful fumes.

But if it takes off bedliner, I'm in....

Traded the itch of glass dust for the burn of paint stripper.....Yikes this boat resto stuff is hazardous to your health w/out careful attention to proper protective equipment....

In the end, it will be worth it, god awful nasty & expensive stripper & all. <<--- Sounds like a bad bachelor party joke...

JB, that stuff will strip your hull to if you decide to go that route. I was able to do a price match with A-Zone using Summit racing who sells it in their store for 21.95. worth a shot on the price matching if you should need more.

May end up as $26/gal (S&H) but still more then $13 less the A-zone..... Thanks again! Now to get the rain gods to head back down GT1M's way or anywhere but here.

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

That was certainly not my intention. Is it too late to retrofit the Bassassin into an Ark?

I am out until Tues pm, the Admiral has certainly garnered a long/late weekend out of town. But I did splash today:) Big yellow inner tube float trip down the Shenendoah River:facepalm: There was the river, I (we) got wet, there was 'some' splashing, so it count's right.... And bonus, I do not look like an extra well done lobster as of this posting......

I'm off the rest of the week, Mon, Wed the following (7/4 & all;)) & next weekend, so I plan to make some meaningful progress around these parts.

I have gotten the 2 seat bench/planks built, sanded, drilled for mounting in the boat & for the seat mounts (all over sized & epoxy filled, ready to be re-drilled) and coated in prep for getting the last of the (@&Y(#^@O*Y#*$#(*#Q(*$& BED LINER OUT!

I treated the bench/planks with the aliphatic resin I've been using at work. Interesting stuff, supposed to cure & be hard as nails. More aggressive adhesion & durability then epoxy. We'll see. Considering using it in place of Glu-vit, but we'll see.....

Finally, progress....

Finally, progress....

Well, as advertised, I spent some quality time w/ a stripper, goggles, respirator & a scrapper this am. 1/2 of the Jet has @70% of the bedliner removed. Of course the remaining 30% is the difficult parts along the edge of the ribs & all the rivets, esp the double row at the chine:facepalm:

I really enjoyed telling the Admiral as I suited up to do battle w/ the bedliner: 'I have an appointment w/ a stripper':D

The sun is now strong enough to almost flash dry the stripper, so that is that for today. Oh that & the sweat along my forehead started to run & get some small flecks of stripper mixed in.

Man that stuff burns:eek: The triple layer of gloves, outside pair heavy stripping gloves, still let the stripper get through.

Once my face & fingertips stop burning, I'll get some pix, if can find our camera post trip.

I plan to work on the bench planks & seats this afternoon. Got the mount holes for the plank drilled, need to check alignment & drill holes to mount seats, and get the vinyl off the seats & get it cleaned up, remount it & dye it off-white, or very light gray.

Tonight I will try to give the ole Johnson some attention.

Have a great over the hump day fellas.......................

Re: Finally, progress....

That stripper is nasty stuff for sure. Those flecks of stripper you don't even notice until the burning starts. I used a wire brush with SS bristles to get around the rivets, crevices etc.

Just a note, on the seat boards, I pre-drilled mine on a drill press and it turned out that the holes were slightly out of alignment, enough to have to really mess with a couple of the bolts on the ends. I don't know if it's because the brackets are old and probably had been messed with before? Just a heads up...
