guys! im happy to share with the rest of the die hard starcraft forum, ive found the rare ss22 hull! i think it was a custom ordered hull. been looking for one of these for years. found one.I assume its a 22 as its longer than 21 and registered as a 22.
no engine.
im split between putting an I/o back in and what i kinda prefer is to convert to outboard with a 4stroke 140suzuki that i have now on my holiday. my current boat is super fast and very gas efficient.
my concern is if i go the outboard bracket road.

1)would the standard longshaft outboard work, or would i have to convert to extra long.
2)how difficult would it be to get the placement of this bracket.
3)what kind of speed and fuel use could i expect.
4) comparing the outboard final product to I/O with volvopenta4
(which i have my eyes on now). would the I/o be slightly more gas ussage? and slower speed wise?

final use is mixed use both scuba diving/ trolling for musky / and offshore great lakes!

thanks.

not sure about shaft length, but speed and fuel use would depend on motor in Q. modern 4 stroke or affordable old carb'd 2 stroke?

my 2 pesos' worth: given your location, go with an outboard simply due to easier winterizing. i bet the Starmada has collectively seen THOUSANDS of I/Os with cracked block etc, and you only need to screw up (forget, procrastinate, out of town when unseasonal ice storm hits, etc) once to be out a lot of $. and a bracket mounted OB on an I/O hull with the tall transom is the best of all worlds for big water safety.....it takes very little swampage from a following sea to roll and sink a boat, and this setup is about as resistant to taking waves over the stern as you can get.

the dead rise will determine what shaft length youll need. I think the deadrise on most of the bigger starcrafts forces you to go with the 25" shaft minimum.... Ther eis just so much boat in the water a 20 " shaft would have the power head too close to the waterline even when static....but under power and coming off power...it would be suseptable to getting wet!....most info is the performance would only improve with an outboard bracket....you can get one mounted then drill the motor mount holes afterwards...to assure and even engine mount to the waterline!!.....that in case you installed the bracket yourself.....if you have it professionally mounted, then it will probably be right on....I built an outboard bracket that added flotation to the stern in the case of the extra heavy motors.....bob

I guess I will be the one to vote for the I/O. Personally I am more comfortable with them and find them quite simple to maintain and repair. Foul a plug on an I/O just open the doghouse, on an outboard ya got to do the balancing act off the back of the transom. The high transom wall on an I/O certainly helps keep water out the back over a regular outboard transom...a bracket certainly would be favorable.

Good luck with your decision on power plants and congrats on finding the boat of your searchings.

guy i bought it from let me know this model did not exist in the catalog and was custom ordered from the manufacturer.
even on the iboat forum i dont find reference to another 22. this is infact a 22 1977 SS super sport!

im still super happy about it all.
got the penta yesterday. picture shows two boats next to each other about to have motors and all sorts of stuff swapped. as my starcraft has nothing at all, and donor boat has everything it could wish for in for stripping.

chieftan 22 1969 of course:)
with Super Sport in background. you can see bolt pattern i am hoping to match.

look at the donor motor.new prop that kissed bottom . only a year old.

easiest fix to get the boat out. im thinking temporary solution, till i get an outboard bracket and extra long shaft

Nice donor Stern drive. My advice is to convert the 3.0L to closed cooling ( heat exchanger ), install it and forget the outboard/ bracket. That will make a good modern powerplant for the boat.

Hey PB --- really nice looking donor parts --- 22 is looking cleaner. Should be interesting as to what you find below the floor!

Since you now have a motor and drive... might be your best bet to just stick with that route. Course it's your call... but it'll work as intended.

Nice progress!

Great 22SS, I also don't see a problem with an I/O, my boat is parked out at camp close to the lake right now, I watch the weather and it is saying chance of freezing for the 24th so she will come home and go in the shop, if it stays cold I'll winterize. If your running a 4cyl, 120-140 pretty hard to beat how easy they are to work on and how little fuel they burn.

ive got the 140 4stroke but it needs conversion to extra long. i think that is going to be the ulitmate goal.
we run the lake all the way to the last day. last year pulled off the lake and it was skim ice frozen by the time i got the boat ready for the road. im not looking forward to doing winterizing coolant flush on every cold weather trip.

Gotcha. Ya... I getcha now! That's getting the FULL boating season there man! I too boat relatively late... November most years.... sometimes only until late October depending on the weather that is called for. It's really nice to be out in the crisp fall air when virtually no one is around!!!

uh, did anyone ever tell you that you have a bad case of MBS.......??

i like your plan but Matt's right that it will be a lot of work to swap to a different I/O and then repplace that with an OB on bracket. this statement: easiest fix to get the boat out. is dangerous....don't kid yourself, engine swaps in anything are a lot of niggling details to make it work right
