Cut a quarter inch off the screw and drive it home. Use a small bolt cutter or heavy-duty electricians pliers and cut a hand full of screws. Use your drill to create a pilot hole then run a screw in to create the thread, back out the screw and replace with one that you cut.
You could also bring back the screws and get some stainless in the correct size.
Be careful with SS screws they break easy if your pilot hole is too small.

Don't You need to run some kind of sealer into the pilot hole?

GLG, thanks for the tip. That is an interesting idea. Plus I get rid of that point that just plain makes me nervous.

Steve, yes, I plan on sealing with some 5200 in each hole and on each screw.

My son is coming in from college for the weekend, so the extra set of hands will allow me to accomplish a lot.

Thanks Teamster.

Made a bad decision and took the worker at Lowe's word for it that 1 1/4 were the shortest self tapping deck screws! (Tan colored) I was focused too much on the actual " tan deck self tapping screws" and not even thinking to just buy stainless screws!

Did you predrill holes or just drive them right into the deck and ribs?

I pre-drilled the holes,..Then filled them with epoxy then redrilled and used 3M goop on the screws when I installed them,....

Re: starcraft supersport 1971 restoration

I apologize for taking off so much time from my last post. After my last post, I was working many hours a week on the boat plus juggling my work schedule along with my family.

I have gotten a great deal done on the boat and have received many praises on how it is coming. I have taken it out on the lake 4 times so far and it has performed with few hiccups each time. My wife loves it and wants to plan a lot of trips.

As you caan see from the photos, I still need to attach my windshields. I have the glass cut, just need to get it together. I have front seating and then I can add a removeable fishing deck. I can also add a seat in the stern if we only have two people fishing on the boat.

My son called today and reminded me that I needed to get my restoration posts going again.

Just want to say that I have really enjoyed learning about these Starcraft boats. I could not have imagined how to tackle such a job if it was not for the members of this website, your many forum posts and threads, and your direct posts to my restoration thread. I really love my boat and am looking forward to many hours on the lake with my family and friends.

GT did you by any chance make a template for the sliding doors at the back of the boat? Mine doesn't have the doors and I want to make some. Found some aluminum sheeting at Lowes that looks a lot like the sheeting used in the original doors, just need to make the doors themselves. Any help would be really appreciated.
