Re: Started rolling on some rustoleum today

Well went and got some non-slip additive and decided to roll it on today. It's made by rustoleum and the can says it is some sort of pumice material. Initiallly it looks like it might be a little rough on bare feet :(, but we will have to see. Anyone have any experience with this stuff? I definitely needed something on the decks, as the paint made them very slippery. Here are a few pics.
PS: I also picked up the carpet and supplies today. Look for another update this weekend sometime.

Yeah maybe I'm overreacting, I'll definately post my thoughts when it cures enough to test.

And if it too rough for your taste, just had another coat or coats without the non-slip additive then recheck.

Re: Started rolling on some rustoleum today

we waited about 3 or 4 days before putting the boat int he water and walking on the floor with shoes to let it dry. it was about a month before the first pressure washing. nothing scientific just how long we waited.
the non skid isn't as bad on bare feet as i expected. loke someone said it's kind of like a diving board. it is hard on swimsuits if you plan to sit on it a lot. at least that is what my son's girl friend tells me.

The general consensus seems to be to give it about a month for it to fully cure, so that's what I'll do. Thanks for the feedback on the non-slip. Hopefully I'll be able to keep my suit in one piece lol :D.

Re: Started rolling on some rustoleum today

Ok so I unrolled the carpet and started trying to lay it into the boat today. For those of you that have experience with doing carpet in this manner, this is what I plan to do:
I cut the six foot wide roll to the approximate length I needed. Then I plan on measuring and pushing the carpet up into the corners and trimming it. I guess I'm just looking for some pointers/things to watch out for while installing. Also, is there any prep I can give the fiberglass to make the glue work better? I was thinking just a quick scuffing?

I don't work with glass so I'll let someone else advise on that.

Get yourself a 4 or even 6 inch wide putty knife (spatula). Use it to push the carpet down in tight against the edges and then use it as a cut guide for your knife. You'll get a nice clean edge that will be pushed down tight so you'll never see any minor imperfections.

Side note: If you're carpet is really thick and stiff you can use a 6 "n" 1 and it won't bend on you.

Well got the carpet all cut to shape, and I have to say, it looks great!! Very pleased with the color and everything. Still have to glue it down but I can see the light at the end of tunnel!! Also got the new humminbird fishfinder in today so I'm really anxious to get this carpet done and get the console back in so I can install it. I really appreciate all the input on my questions. Anything you see that concerns you (other than the fact that im using carpet :p) feel free to speak up. Thanks in advance.

The best $4 I've spent so far. It was great for getting the carpet deep into the edges.

What the heck you waiting for --- Get er done!!!! Looks great...
Funny isn't it, up until you get the carpet in you doubt your skills. Something as simple as carpet makes you realize just how hard you worked to make that carpet look that good.

So true! Now that I've got carpet the project seems to be coming together very quickly! Thanks for the support!

You'll get there ;). You just can't let yourself get burnt out, learned that the hard way. And btw the fishfinder is a matrix 12 unit, settled on it because it has the ability to add gps later on if I buy the antenna, which I totally plan on doing funds permitting (college student), also thought the price: $150 + free shipping was a pretty good deal. Can't wait to get it hooked up!

I want to redo the carpet in my 14ft Smokercraft. How well did the edges of the carpet stay down with the glue you used? and which glue did you use? I'm worried that the edges will curl up if i only glue. Did you staple at all? *edit* i guess you wouldn't have stapled into glass... lol

thanks man

Haven't glued it down yet so I couldn't tell ya. I'm fairly confident in the fact that it will stay down well. I'm going to use some exterior grade carpet glue, so it should hold up well. And btw, I'm not stapling it at all.

Shouldn't need staples, just a j-roller to press it down evenly and try your best not to twist or turn on it until it dries. If you can stay off it completely, all the better. It takes about a week to fully cure. Be patient.
