Re: Starting a new job.....again!(MAYBE NOT!!)

Thanks Jim and Ken!

I think i will pass on this guy. The more i thought about him yelling over the phone after i apologized if i called at a bad time i could imagine how he would act once he got you out on the road.
Then the fact that he offered me one thing then said he never told me that.
I was very professional during the phone conversation and made several attempts to turn him around and calm the conversation down.
It was ignored and then he hung up on me.

Unless he calls to apologize and has a whole new attitude and sticks to the original deal...forget it!

Wonder how this guy even keeps anyone?

I have tons of large companies that would hire me but don't want to be out 14 days or more at a time.

My experience with the trucking industry was sometimes a nightmare. Dispatchers love to mess with your mind. Your mind is already messed with because of the lack of sleep and too much caffeine. Many companies want you to fudge the driving hours books which is stressful. Ya, you fudge the books and then have a accident and get thrown in jail. Or get a big fine at the weigh stations, random pull overs etc. Hard to drive when you are nodding off. Home time is rarely what is advertised. Extreme boredom is a given.
To me the best way to go trucking is being a independent and not beholden to one company. Or take less pay and be a local driver.
You are responsible for the condition of that vehicle. I wouldn't drive anything that didn't completely check out during the pre trip inspection. Your azz is on the line
I wouldn't go driving again as a independent with these high fuel prices and bad economy.

I got bait and switched at my current job regarding a draconian attendance policy I was not informed of until the day I started. Fortunately that's pretty much the only problem and my boss(es) are cool. But if it's looking this bad before you even start? That ain't good.

Have you considered the possibility that your new boss has seen your posts here? Since iboats is a direct competitor to West Marine, I wouldn't be surprised if there are folks there who cruise this site on occassion, if not frequently.

You have a number of posts that are completely clear as to who you would be going to work for and what you expected to be driving. You also have a forum handle that doesn't exactly hide your identity. Now, all of a sudden you will be driving an old truck and your new boss is pissed at you.

Coincidence?

Maybe, but maybe not.

This sounds like the classic boss with no soul. It's a good quality to have sometimes when you are the boss. I've worked for a boss like this before, they tell you lies to get you in the door then they do whatever serves them the best.

The guy I worked for would low bid jobs, so low that there was no way of actually delivering. We would run out of $$ about 2/3'ds of the way through (custom engineering) and the customer either had to eat the loss and start over with another company, or fork out more cash.

He would use his "promise the world" charisma to lure customers into a false sense of trust, generally leading to contracts without significant penalties for failure to deliver.

The bottom line here is make your demands now and be upfront. If you let him jerk you around now he will only get worse. If you demand what is fair and he still hires you, then you will have his respect !?

I doubt he has ever heard of Iboats! West Marine uses many outside carriers.
They do not have any of their own trucks.
I bet they have at least 20 different companies hauling freight for them.

Plus i never mentioned the name of the trucking company so i doubt very much that was the problem.
Good thinking though Jay!...;)

After thinking about it all weekend and this guy yelling at me like i am a child i'm about sure i will tell him where to stick this deal.

He is a cocky little redneck, about mid 30's and still has a mullet hair cut..
Not very professional.

GARY- I think that if you pass on this job offer you will be a lot happier and besides next spring, you would have no time to go boating or fishing. Let the mullet wearing redneck find someone else he can use as a whipping boy.

trucking jobs are hard enough even when working for good people. Glad you passed on it, sounds like it was a nightmare waiting to happen. And you can count on the home time not being what was promised either it sounds like. With times the way they are, alot of employees are being taken advantage of, IMO.

K - I just mentioned the possibility on the off chance that those guys might have seen this on their own. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that many companies use services for the background checks involved in their hiring process. As intrusive as it might seem, some of these services do look for people who blog or participate in forums. If you have any kind of a "handle" that has anything to do with your real name, it makes it pretty easy for them to find you.

Welcome to the world of "big brother."

Re: Starting a new job.....again!(MAYBE NOT!!)

I agree with all the above.

This guy never even called my last boss.I take it that he will hire any person he can get.

The Driver staffing service i was with said to let them know.
They have a few new accounts in the works.
One is a US Mail contract, all drop and hook.

Glad they are super nice people and i did not burn any bridges there..;)

I'm sure Joe-Bob the redneck will call tomorrow demanding i take that POS truck...Too bad!

I don't blame you. As long as the bills get paid, life's too short to put up with morons.

Hey Gary. What the heck?!! I'll second the overall opinion here, you did the right thing. dump him. don't look back.

sounds like the temp thing could actually work out pretty well for you. any chance of getting pay increases if you stay there and have good performance?

any Conway trucking near you. I've heard they pay pretty well for experienced drivers?

good luck

Are you hoping for the fedex thing? if you are, what department? I'm assuming the big rigs or freight? just wondering because my Buddy works for fedex and is a driver for home delivery.... He is paid salary not hourly or by the mile, and is always complaining about being overworked and under paid. From what I understand there are millions of sub contractors or route owners that independently hire people like my Buddy to drive their route...... hope that's not how that deal your hoping for is.... Maybe its different for the larger trucking.
