Re: Sticky rings??

Sorry I skipped out on ya' hotrod....I'm working mids and I went to bed....couldn't see anymore.

Don't know what kind of spark tester ya' found but if you can set the gap on it, set it to at least 7/16". The spark should be a strong think lighting like spark. Each cylinder should have the same.

I used a plug tester light, held on wire I do have spark on all 4. My connection were pritty dirty. I cleaned them up but dont know if that did anything. the light looked kinda dim but put it on my truck running and it looked the same,.. need to get battery charged and see what happens. will clean the plugs on take it from there.

Re: Sticky rings??

OK...cleaned all contacts and plugs,, switched from 6 gallon tank that sat out in the rain to boat tank... Bam!!! she fired up! with alot of work with the choke and throttle. Ran at high idle on it's own..2000 rpm sounded good but would start to bogg and then die...can restart her by primming ball and hitting choke key. but she will not just fire up, it takes alot. worked on her for more than an hour to try and see what it takes to get her started and i coudnlt figure it out, seems like I did have to hit the primer ball everytime after she died, but when she started to die hitting the ball did not help.. but once started i could not keep her running for more than 1 minute or so.

Will read over manual tonight and see what I can find, will get new plugs in the am.. It was really nice to at least see her run she went from a piece of block on my back porch to a running motor.. It is a happy feeling as far as I got..

Any suggestions on where to start

And no out to the bar after work OBJ,, you got some work here!!!

Really need to check the timimg but Im having a hard time understanding link and synch TDC and timing.

Edit..think I can handle the link and synch..but do I really have to have the piston stop tool, ive read I do  I watch the pistong hit TDC both times and it lands right on the TDC mark on the fly wheel

Re: Sticky rings??

Just some things to double check hotrod.....

All fuel line connections are tight and no kinks.
Fuel tank is vented.
Did ya' rebuild the carbs???? Don't remember if you did or not. This should be a part of any rebuild.
Did you reconnect the VRO pump oil side or are you running premix?
The motor side of the VRO pump, it is connected to the block via the pulse limiter isn't it?
Is the primer solenoid red lever pointed to the bottom of the solenoid? This is normal running position. If it's up, you could be flooding the engine.
If all the above is good, you could have a sync and link problem here. The procedure can be a pain to understand the first 50 times or so... :D

Re: Sticky rings??

That looks like a piston stop tool, the web page tkes me to a spark tester. the stop tool is what I need i think.

correct me if im wrong but the tool only makes it so the piston stops at the same point each time. so i could use anything that im able to gauge or measure at the piston.

Re: Sticky rings??

The piston stop tool is made out of a spark plug and all thread rod and a wing nut.
Take the center porcelain out and thread the rod in and use wing nut to adjust and hold in place.

Re: Sticky rings??

Hotrod.....the forward diaphram chamber of the pump is the "motor" end. It works off the press/vac created in the block from the #3 piston going up and down. On the bottom of the "motor" end is a nipple that connects to the block via hose. Somewhere in this connection should be a pulse limiter. It's either screwed into the block or it's between two pieces of hose hose. Blue end should face towards the pump.

Re: Sticky rings??

HUmm...Im thinking the hose not connected to the bottom carb would make her run alittle strange,,,,yu think!!!...lol How nice it was to see that!! I know I put it on it must have fell off during installation. Just seen it, will reattach and see what happens.. but you would think id have gas all over when i hit the prim bulb??

EDIT>> ok it is the fuel pump hose that attaches to the block as you said OBJ.. it got pushed down when I installed the cover/ Im trying to pry it now.. and wow did notice there is a missing hose on the "front of the fuel pump.. I feal like a "TOOL"... I'll let yu's know
