I was out the other day with a buddy of mine on New River, NC fishing, only this time the tide allowed us to go much farther up river that ive ever been before. I heard some buzz that all the catfish had swam farther up river than normal because of the droubt so I went up river to see. While anchored off we got our lines in the water and sat there quietly. After a while i heard this whooooping noise that I ignored and went back to stareing at my line. A couple minutes went by and I heard it again, this time I realized It was something I didnt recognize and looked at my buddy and whispered "what was that?" "Did you hear that?" We continued to whisper about it for another couple minutes during that time and heard it 2 more times, making a total of 4 times hearing it. We started to talk louder after that and then the noise stopped. I have been in the woods for a long time and have heard every type of bird there is. This had the tone of a hoot owl but definately not the pattern. It was a steady and drawn out "whooooooooooop", then a minute or two then another noise. What gets me is that when we started talking louder it stopped, and that it was right before dark, when there is barely any light left, like a locator call. I dont know of any animal in North America that makes a sound like that and im not one to believe in big foot or other mythical creatures like that but this kinda freeked me out! Anyone ever heard a sound like that?

More than once I have tracked down strange noises in the woods.......to a durned catbird.

Yup, they can act just like a parrot.

I think Bondo nailed it, trumpeter swans and Sandhill cranes also make some really weird noises.

Too low pitched, steady and methodical to be a cyote, ive heard thousands of sandhill cranes and definately not one of them. The first thing it reminded me of was noises of baboons and other primates you hear on nature shows. Dont know what those parots are you mention, never heard of it. Look, im not trying to say it was anything, im not one to fully believe anything until i see it myself but i have never heard this noise before and i honestly cant think of anything native to this country that makes a noise like that...just cureouse to hear other opinions on this. And yes,...we did catch a couple fish and no im never bored as long as im out on the water!

Maybe a loon? It is hard to translate the sound through text. Just thinking of other water birds that make a noise like that.

The car alarm is probably a catbird. A grey catbird is a small perching bird that's pretty hard to pick out in a tree. They mimic any sound they hear, and can drive you nuts just for kicks.

Bob it couldn't have bee Bigfoot because in his original post he said he didn't believe in Bigfoot. Besides that, I married her and she was with me that night.

My mixbreed dog makes a loud, long, lonesome erie howl when she hears sirens. Could it have been a Coonhound? Barred or Great Horned Owl? Or hikers in the forest, listening to the echo of their holler? If none of the above it must be Bigfoot:eek: I saw a Bigfoot documentary recently and they claimed "Bigfoots diet is commonly known" or something to that effect, If they know what they eat, then they must be real!

Re: Strange sound in forest

I have thought of a loon cause we do have them out here but a Loon changes pitch throughout its call. It makes a long cry upward pitch with a sharp downward ending pitch. It wasnt an alectus parrot or a catbird i have listened to the calls of both. All the animals mentions on here so far have a variating pitch tone. This was more steady and uprising. I should have realized I would get nothing but jokes on here cause of this (although they were funny). I guess if I ever hear it again ill try to get a recording with my phone. Trust me, im not a believer in much, ive been in the wild most my life but this sound really confused me.

Re: Strange sound in forest

Whatever it was Im sure it is an animal known in the usa that you either heard for the first time or is imitating a sound not regular to animals. Im sure as much outdoorsy as you probably are you do not know every animal sound off all of the fauna in the usa. There are over 2000 birds in the usa, over 500 in NC, I doubt you can Id them all, just saying. Bigfoot would be at the end of my list.
