You can also use a sawzall down low and slice them out too.

Yep, that works GREAT, and really cuts down on the grinding and all that CRAPPY dust!!!!!

be careful not to cut through the hull if you do it that way like I did lol.

nice to see another thundercraft owner on here. I've got a 1990 1506 myself. if you have to replace the transom you WILL need to take the cap off. mine is the same setup and that splashwell just goes way too far back and down. even a midget couldnt get in there.

I didnt have to really replace the stringers or the transom but my floor was a mess and I had to replace pretty much everything else due to the sinking.

how bad was the flotation foam in yours? mine was sopping wet and heavy as bricks.

Have a question as far as the glass goes... what type cloth should i use? went on us composites.com and found 7.5 oz glass cloth said its used for boat building/repairs.... need to redo stringers, transom and floor. also need to know if polyester resin would be ok to use and if it is about how much would i need to repair a 16 foot boat?

Re: Stringers rotted....

Here's how I recommend that you install your stringers. I would use the 404 or 435 Poly resin and 1.5 oz CSM mat and 1708 Biax Cloth. Start with 5 gallons of resin and 15 yds of mat and 15 yds of 1708.
Coat the stringers in Resin and apply the CSM making sure to wrap the edges. When they are dry, Lay down a bead of PL Premium Adhesive on the bottom edges and let it set for a couple of hours so it will firm up a bit. When it is firm but still a bit squishy, install the stringer and tab it to the hull using 3 inch wide by 12" long pieces of the 1.5oz mat. Mix your resin HOT so it will set FAST. This will get the stringers, IN PLACE and vertical. (NOTE: Make sure you have a way to brace them and keep them 90 degees and in place). When the tabs dry, mix up the Peanut Butter(Thickened resin) and fillet in the stringers using a Large Plastic Spoon. Wait till the NEXT DAY and then start laying the 1708 over the stringers. The first layer of 1708 should extend out on the hull approx. 4-5 inches and the 2nd 8-10 inches. Try REAL hard not to get air bubbles in the cloth. Use your hands and the stick pins to hold it all in place. A 6" Plastic putty knife works well to help smooth and spread. Just don't STARVE the cloth of resin.

Re: Stringers rotted....

Here's how I recommend doing a transom...

Use the same CSM and 1708. Drill some 1/2" holes in random locations in the transom. When you clamp it to the outer skin, the thickened resin will fill the holes and this will keep air pockets from forming during the clamp up.

Re: Stringers rotted....

You will probably need more resin but 5 gals is a good start. By the time you're done with the transom and stringers you'll have a better idea on the resin.

Vinylester resin is better than polyester and yes it's a bit more expensive. Its good stuff and a lot of guys use it for below the waterline applications. It better than polyester in many ways, but still has the same charitristics of poly (as in poly won't stick to epoxy, the vinylester is he same way, not for use over epoxy)

I like the vinylester resin and have used in a good bit, but for 99% of applications the poly is just fine.

Re: Stringers rotted....

Check with Lowe's/Home Depot and see if they have any 3/4" UNDERLAYMENT Tongue and Groove. It uses 100% waterproof Glue and is VERY Stable Plywood. GREAT Stuff and NOT very Expensive. Would be GREAT to use for your Transom and Stringers.

Oh YEAH. If you do it right you could use just about any wood you want. The Poly and the mat is what really does the job the wood is there to hold it all together. Using a good quality wood is INSURANCE in case the resin gets punctured.

Re: Stringers rotted....

Just got the top cap removed last night and got the old transom dug out of there. the stringers were not even attached to the transom! fiberglass and wood just end a couple inches before the transom.... huh I am definatly going to tie them when I redo them. I will post some pics soon. almost time to start cutting new transom that is when I find some descent quality plywood..... also measured transom thickness from outer skin to outside of inner skin right at 1 and 3/8 and 1 1/2 and it looked like one 3/4 sheet and one 1/2 sheet of ply with glass in between just curious if this sounds right for the glass and resin to take up 1/4 inch ? or should I use one 3/4 and one 5/8 sheet just dont want it to be to thick and not be able to get that top cap back on....

Re: Stringers rotted....

Glad to hear the tear out went well. Did the boat have a bilge area? 3/4" and 1/2" should be just about right. Your thickened resin for the glue up and the final two layers of 1708 and resin will finish her off to 1 1/2".;)
