stupid people at the ramp

I was at the local ramp on the 4th. Launching was no problem except one person that couldn't drive with a trailer. Most people behaved out on the water and we had a good time. We came back to the dock to pull out and there was a boat that was getting ready to tube. The whole family was on the dock with 2 people fishing off of the opposite side and the side facing the river they were getting tubers ready. They had the whole dock tied up. I came in to dock and the kids wouldn't quit fishing or move. So I ended up beaching then going to get the trailer. After I got the boat on the trailer and out of the water I decided to watch what went on. The family proceeded to load their tuber and then gun it right through the no wake zone. They did this for 20 minutes before I got disgusted and left. This is why I want Pennsylvania to mandate everyone to take a boaters safety course, not just a test and actual on the water test.

in our wretched state? with our pathetic state government? you stand a better chance of getting pregnant (i'm assuming you're a guy with the handle) i agree we should, but we won't the c.g. aux. is busy enough trying to get people through the written test. None of them are crazy enough for a "driver's" test.

Re: stupid people at the ramp

My wife and I had a good laugh this weekend too at the ramp...
I find here in Michigan that the busier a ramp is, the better the people at the ramp are...unfortunately, the inverse is also true: slow/non-busy ramp=complete idiots.
We went to a quiet local lake (read: non-busy ramp) and watched the idiots.
First guy we saw, after waiting in line like the rest of us for several minutes, backed his boat in the water STILL STRAPED TO THE TRAILER!!! Second guy, backed a 20+ foot inboard ONTO THE DOCK!!! And when I say onto the dock, I'm talking directly, perfectly centered, onto the dock, with a loud "scccrrrraappppeee" and the wheels of the trailer almost off the ground!!!!
My wife says when I pull mine in I'm like a mechanic in an Indy 500 pit crew: start the stop watch, back the boat in, detatch, pull away, park, run to the boat, start the motor, then stop the watch and check the time....55 seconds, a new record!!!

Re: stupid people at the ramp

2 peeves for me this weekend

1- clueless family almost cut my anchor line. i have no idea what they were trying to do, the current didn't care either. by the time they pulled their heads out, their granny (on a tube) almost got impaled on the bow of my boat...at very slow speed.

2- people sunning and grabbing ***** on the boat docks....catch the name? BOAT DOCK....not sun-tan spot, not tube tie-up location, not picnic area....BOAT DOCK. like i said in #1, there's a current. when it's running, you go for the dock like you mean it. otherwise, you either miss it or get washed into it by the current.

you'd think people blubbering about the dock would move when a boat comes in to use the dock....nope. they look at you like you've just invaded their turf. "scuse me ma'am but i can't reach the cleat with your butt in the way"

Throw them a line and ask them to help and they'll move out of your way real fast.

Number 2 is exactly what we deal with here on the gulf coast. These redneck families come out of the north fully stocked with beer and children and they think the launch is some kind of swimming pool.

All day they sit with their fking lawn chairs getting wasted all the while the kids are swimming in the launch. Its almost quite laughable, you can tell they think they are payday rich.

Not to mention they leave their trash when they go.... I really would like to kick the hell out of them...

If they swim in the channel around here they'll get run over by the bass boats and the cigarette boats flying around not paying attention.
I boat the susky in the williamsport area.

I know what you mean. A few weeks ago I was at the same ramp trying to get my boat out and there was a family doing just the same thing. The parents were sitting up under a tree in the shade as their kids were running around on the dock, jumping from it, and swimming right on the ramp. As I start to back down the ramp the two kids decided to run behind me I mean right behind me. Then as I start to load my boat the kids swim close to my turning prop. That was a very stressful day at the ramp.

If I saw kids swimming at my ramp I'd have to call the DNR or something. Once I had to deal with some flatbillers fishing, but kids swimming is a whole different, dangerous situation.

A few years back, my buddy tied up at the ramp and ran up to get his truck and trailer. Same thing going on that you guys are talking about...family having an outing, kids playing and swimming at the launch ramp. So he gets backed in and sees them on the dock and can hear them yelling and carrying on. He hops out to put his boat on the trailer, and they are yelling at him about how they are going to sue him because one of their precious little snowflakes sliced the bottom of his foot open while climbing his outdrive and standing on my buddy's prop.

Re: stupid people at the ramp

sounds like you guys need some old timers at your dock.

Here in my town about 4 or 5 old retired guys run the launch...

You **** up around them and you'll know you better cut **** out. If you don't have a boat trailer and park in the parking lot - within 5 mins there WILL be a 35 dollar ticket on your window and if you EVER run down the dock they will come hollering at you for sure!

I saw a kid go to skateboard down the dock the other day and this old guy yelled so loud "GET OFF THAT DAMN SKATEBOARD MORON" that I couldn't believe it came out of his mouth.

People here at the docks are generally well behaved, nobody ever swims off it because we have 8 lanes at this one and it's VERY busy - they would simply be run over.

I'll have to take a pic of it today.

Re: stupid people at the ramp

I witness the usual guys that haven't use their rigs in the entire year and get to try it in a full busy access place. Taking the boat out was not much better as these same retards can't get their boat right in the trailer. Maybe due to lack of use or the many beers in their blood stream.
I head to the ramp around 4 in order to get to the cove I like and anchor in a good angle that keeps the wave from the channel from rocking my boat. Bow and stern anchor are perfectly set up. Then I had this "tool" show up close to the start of fireworks with this huge Chriscraft (thirty some feet) and anchor way to close to me. He had to use his motor while anchored to move away from me. I was stressed from the thought of that mammoth hitting me specially after that other chriscraft hit us and almost killed us on april. Final stroke was about 20 min from the fireworks start they caught my stern anchor and dragged it to my stern totally messing up my anchoring. I started hollering at them that they caught my darn stern anchor and was dragging me. The finally freed my line and moved to a safely distance. Not ever they say sorry or anything like that. I was able to set up again but they pretty closed screwed my night.

Reminds me of an old fishing pier I used to goto when I was a kid. Their was a homemade sign that said, "no bikes / pets / beer / Idiots on the pier" the enforcers were a select group of guys that were down their every weekend.

I witnessed everything on that sign go over the side of the pier. Quite funny times, but what a peaceful fishing spot.

Re: stupid people at the ramp

It must be the people in this area. I have put my jon boat in at the Muncy access several times this year and already had a couple incidents. First was guys fishing ON the boat ramp when I came in to trailer the boat. I ran over their lines.

Second was a couple guys who backed their boat down to the water then decided to unload all the crap out of the van into the boat, attach the outboard, then fill it with fuel while I waited patiently. They picked up the pace as I inched closer.

Third was a guy and a teen that decided it would be a good idea to troll their boat into mine as I was putting on the trailer. After I got out and I saw the 6 foot paint mark on my boat I went and asked them about the damage on their boat, which of course was none. I kindly thanked them for the nice paint mark on my jon when the said "sorry" and drove off. I'll do much worse to it myself, but it's the point of it in my opinion.

Most people are pretty decent and respect one another but those that don't really get under my skin. I always do my best to stay out of other people's way and I pick up the pace when others are waiting for me.

As far as expecting the govt to do more to help us out, it's a waste of time. That's why I just tell people when they are doing something wrong.

The arch street ramp (Susquehanna state park) is really bad for that crap. I've seen it all this year but this ramp is only about 5-10 minutes from my apt so I just put up with it for now.

Re: stupid people at the ramp

I live in Puyallup next to Tacoma (Puget Sound Area). To go crabbing we put in at a little private single lane launch with 1-3 spots for boats depending on the tides. when the tide is out the launch is anything but level if you launch straight out. Needless to say every time we are there you have 8 people waiting to launch and 5 waiting to pull out (no room for anyone to launch, park the boat, ect. We grab a soda at the marina and clean the crab and fish we catch on the back of the boat while someone mans the motor keeping us away from the docks and the other boats jockeying in line. This launch is never smooth but always full of arguments and fights by people who feel that everyone needs to get in and out within 2 minutes besides themselves. I too like to be ready to go right when it is my turn and have everything in the boat, trim ready to go, ball pumped, ect and cannot stand it when willie and millie feel it is fine to get the straps off at the water's edge and grab fluffie and buffie the rat dogs from the truck and put them into the boat after it is in the water but before they drive the truck up to the lot and end up tying up the launch for 15 minutes. It is painful to say the least but if you let yourself get consumed with anger like I see every weekend day we use this launch I am pretty sure your heart attack will happen sooner than later.

We were coming in the other day and a house boat with 2 wave runners just taking up the whole beach so we could not come in and drop off. My wife who is never shy told them to move, just got an appology but no movement. just a few minutes later a cop came by and they all of a sudden got going..........fancy that.
