Anyone seen these in person? Used them? How is the accuracy with the .45 Colt ammo? How is the feel? Bulky? or Balanced?

Wife would like a protection piece and I am thinking that a revolver that shoots 2 1/2 in. .410's OR .45 Colts would be just the ticket. Great for in house - not long range and would not go through walls, but the scare factor would be terrific ... more knock down power would be better, but for panic shooting at close range ...

Anyone play with it, what are your thoughts? taurususa.com/products/gunselector-results.cfm?series=41"]"taurususa.com/products/gunselector-results.cfm?series=41

Re: Taurus Judge

I would go with something more basic for a woman's piece. Maybe a nice glock in 40 cal. I never like combo guns.

Re: Taurus Judge

I saw one at a gun show and it was bulky. I had a TC Contender that shot both and I have a doe from the 45 LC.

Buy the little lady a nice 20 ga pump action and have a 20" barrel installed. Slugs, birdshot or buckshot.... nothing beats the sound of a pump action being cycled. It would not be as harsh as a 12 Ga (that would work too). I actually like the intimidation factor of it too. I doubt there would be much need for more capacity. Fit it with a nice flashlight which helps aiming at night in the dark.

I just don't feel that every woman is ready for a pistol but darn near EVERY woman will be ready to point a shotgun.

After you do purchase her a weapon.......... remember these words........

Re: Taurus Judge

Stopping power is the ticket.A 41 or 45 colt revolver delivers that.
You may want to check if you can find the type that you can fit with a 22 barrel for practice purposes,so she can get used to her new toy without having to invest too much in ammo expenses.
The amazing thing about these 45 revolvers is that they have hardly any kick back.

I have to agree on the revolver part, for a novice. Especially a single action. They make a lot of noise and the sound of a hammer going back is also very intimidating.

They are also very safe. No hammer draw back, no fire. Simple.

Get her a hammer-less S&W revolver in .357. Easy to use and carry, plus it will shoot .38's for practice or business.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I still want to hold one - see how it feels for myself, and how easy it is to conceal, but my excitement has cooled somewhat after reading these posts ...

That's already the case - she knows the combo to the safe and knows how to shoot most of the guns there anyway! And her bow is hanging on the wall beside the safe!:(

Re: Taurus Judge

Some of these guys are acting like women are too incompetent to work a gun... it's not really complicated to **** a revolver or pull the slide on a pistol.

Have you considered letting her pick out her own gun? Obviously, you want to steer her away from a 380 or some other trash gun. I'll bet she'll feel a lot more confident with a gun she picked out herself, as opposed to a Dirty Harry look-a-like that most guys pick out.

Have any of you ever shot one those worthless LadySmith hammerless guns? When your hands are already shaking from fear, a hammerless gun is just one more thing to throw off your aim. And there goes the intimidation factor of cocking a revolver or racking the slide on a pistol.

Yea, good points there, RF. She will, ultimately pick out her own sidearm. She does like the looks of the little glocks, but doesn't like my 9mm. And remember, I want her to get something that I like also! (But I think the S&W .50 is a bit to big ;) !)

If the .50 is too big, and a "Lady Smith" is too feminine, then I would think a .45 auto would be just right.

Inside house defense...... go shotgun. A 40 S&w, 9mm, 45 lc or acp, 50 S&W all will travel through a wall....into the next room or neighbors house or worse into the gargae and hit the BOAT!!!!

Naw, it has to go through 6 - 8 inches of solid concrete in any direction (roof, floor, and walls) to get to the boat, so that is safe! :D I agree with the shotgun in the house - that is why I was liking the thought of the Judge.

I've got one of those little glocks in 40 cal. Plenty of stopping power. But Bob raises a good point about penetrating through walls. That's where aim becomes very important. I tried to get my wife interested in a shotgun, but she has no interest.

My wife is most comfortable with a revolver. An 8" .357 Dan Wesson lol

Re: Taurus Judge

Security and cool factor are two different things.

I do not want to even have to think about a potential jam when racking a shotgun or an auto pistol-in the dark. For protection, close range, a revolver is hard to beat. Simple, almost completely fault proof. Even s misfire is no problem.

I do not agree that women can't handle any gun. They can but generally, I mean generally, they are not as interested as we are. That's why I keep saying -SIMPLE.

Re: Taurus Judge

It sounds like your wife is experienced with firearms as mine is, if that is the case and she ever has to use it get a 45APC auto for her those pantie waist 38, 357 and 9mm won't always get the job done in one hit like the 45 and a blow back auto absorbs a lot of the recoil. My 100# wife and now a couple of granddaughters love them and when one goes off the sound and the muzzle flash reek with authority, if she ever has to use it make sure it gets the job done.

Re: Taurus Judge

When I got married my petite wife took over control of my favorite revolver, a first generation Charter Arms Buldog. I had to buy one for her to get mine back. Many of the second through fourth generation revolvers wern't worth bringing home, but the new owners got the bugs worked out and the quality is back up to snuff. The new Buldog pug has a 2 1/2 inch shrouded barrel. Just remember that it is called a buldog because it bites. A gun that is a study in light wieght combined with 44 Special ammunition has a strong recoil. That said, she usually put 25 rounds though hers in a practice session.

Her play gun is a 45 Long colt, 1873 Cavalry knock off. She stops when the ammo runs out! She can also use my 1911 with equal eaase but prefers a wheel gun. She has a 20 guage side by side as her shotgun but would easily use one of my 12 ga. if she needed to. What ever caliber is chosen, a bullet on target is far better than one that has more energy and is not. Modern defensive ammo like Glaser Safety Slugs, or Corbon's premium will make even a .380 or a .38 Special an acceptable weapon if that is all that the user can handle with skill and confidence.

We do not worry about background structures usually, as frequent training enforces not putting your finger on the trigger until the target is full within the sight picture and good ammunition will transfer most of the bullets energy into the body of the target. I personnally know from experience that Winchester Silvertips in .45 ACP will not overpenatrate.

The noise of a pump gun going home or a revolver being cocked is only a means of forearming a determined perp, and there are more and more of them out there as drug use goes up and gang affiliation requires worse crimes.

Pop was a cop and taught me that if you ever clear leather on a man, then you should drop him dead. The fist knowledge that he should have that you have a gun should be the bullet tearing through his flesh, otherwise he will try his best to kill you. Pop insisted that if it was not worth taking life, then it was not worth pointing a gun at someone, better thinking would solve the situation.

I know that there are exceptions, but the advice is still sound.

I would strongly suggest some advanced firearms training. During a stressfull situation one goes on automatic and does only what their training dictates. The $300 to $500 bucks for a good course is well worth it.
