Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

brief update. not too much progress since i still don't have title resolved. trailer is rewired and has most roller replaced; new bunks built but not yet carpeted and installed.

i did get sick of looking at the dang ASBOturf one Sunday and dove into the demolition. cut floor rivets and pulled front 3 sections, yanked all the used-to-be-foam from under floor, pulled side panels, ripped out all ASBOturf. 3-4 contractor bags worth and filled my 6hp shop vac......had to switch to the big one after my little one began making sad noises.

like someone else, i found that my old foam had been eaten by more than mice.....a signif portion of it had been melted by fuel etc spills. how do they spill stuff that eats foam so many places in the boat?

the side panels are fine and will just need new vinyl covering. about half the floor will be usable to cut plywood pieces out of for other projects (did i mention that i'm a bottom feeder?) and all will make good templates for cutting new floor sections. here are a few pix:
http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/payasodelmar/

didn't pull the sternmost floor panel and splashwell cuz i need to be able to just drop it all back in for the appraisal if needed. once the title is cleared up, i'll build a motor stand and yank it, then do transom.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

got a few pix of the console construction up on photobucket.

http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/payasodelmar/

(sorry Jas, i still can't get it to let me post pix directly. keeps telling me i have an invalid file or not a valid link altho i paste the URL direct from photobucket...)(yo soy el menso....)

in case the pics aren't self explanatory, it's made from 1/2" birch ply and oak strips....the oak serves as combination reinforcement against warpage and trim. glued 1/2" thick strips all along inside of starboard side where door opens....the strips stick into the door opening by 1/2" on all sides so they help form an addtl splash barrier. and the exterior trim (1/4x2") on door overlaps the hole so it both hides my crappy saw work and also blocks the gap from spray

all visible hardware is brass but i screwed the oak reinf strips to inside with #6 x3/4 SS screws as well as gluing. corners are assembled with a strip of 1x1 oak screwed n glued to both panels plus a brace cut from 2x2 alum angle at the base to help keep things perpendicular. i will probably lay strips of glass cloth along each corner and epoxy em in place once i have it all done, sort of like a "stitch and glue" boat.
most of my electrics will live inside....fuse panels, ACR, house battery, etc. All that will be under the splashwell is the starting battery and the battery switch. and it's big enough to stow the kicker gas tank underneath.

in other news, 3 of the 4 floor panels are done, and we have about a grand worth of stuff on the way....seat, VHF, compass, gauge set, switch panels and electrics, ACR/battery switch, etc etc etc ad bankruptium

B2 uncheck the box that says -
Retrieve remote file and reference locally

I copied one of your small pics, but if you open to the big one and copy you will be all set.

Looking great

no, still working on the title. going by the TX parks and wildlife office tomorrow to see if i have all the paperwork basically filled out correctly and have all documents needed. also gonna get the name of the appraisers and go get that done in case i have to go the bonded-title route....i've been holding off on a lot of work so i can show them the boat the way it came home, in all its $300 glory........

folks at TX P&W were surprisingly helpful and friendly and i guess we have the process officially started.

on the OUCHEROONIO!! front, we learned about that 18 gal. underfloor gas tank someone mentioned on here as fititng between stringers of 18' hull. it's Moeller part #FT1826 and is still available if you do some research. it's a special order item from Moeller so anyone you order it from will quote you a 4-6 week wait time. i ordered mine from Defender yesterday cuz i'd never heard of any of the other outfits that claimed they could get me one. $344 with oversize shipping, a mere $44 more than i paid for boat/motor/trlr........ ahh, the joys of bottom feeding:rolleyes::facepalm:

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Good score on the tank, glad things are moving along with the title, B2. The Chrysler 100...I ran a pair of 89' Force 150 hp on a custom built 32 ft alum hull for several years. My understanding is Merc used their ignition system on the Chrysler platform as Chrysler ignition system had problems. Buddy had a 65 hp Chrysler that ran great and then wouldn't start at all, left us dead in the water. I didn't trust his outboard so I purchased a 45 hp evinrude as back up and that is what we ran on his boat instead. So Merc might be the place to try for ignition parts

The force 150 hp were awesome, only problem was rings on one broke in a cylinder and we (old outboard mech & I ) tore it down. We replaced new aftermarket, piston/rings there was minimal scoring on cylinder walls and she ran great after. Hmm, it also seems there was an issue with the starters, but local shop fixed that problem. Side note this was early 90's and it cost $50/hour to move this boat with two 150's on the back, can't imagine the fuel bill now.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

altho some are worse than others, i reckon "thirsty" is one of the main features of any 70s 2 stroke....but it will be a few years yet before there are enough affordable Etecs and 4 strokes on the used mkt.

ignition is weird. instead of a magneto, it uses a coil and distrib just like a car. makes it easy to wire tach etc tho. seems to be working fine so far. i always tote a kicker anyway, even in the portabote.

pulled the windshield and all gunwale stuff last night in prep for topside paint. boat REALLY looks like a reject now. somehow got bitten by a spider....dime sized welt on my knee swelled to size of half my hand and flaming red by 1 am. it looks better this morn but still burns like fire and i can already see some tissue necrosis. i was checking before i stuck my hand into crevices cuz we have black widows out the wazoo here, but apparently i need to check where i'm about to kneel too....

i have my new "slider" panels that cover the opening under splash well cut and epoxied but was wondering if it might make more sense to hinge these at the center instead of reinstalling em as sliders. the track seems to always get full of dirt n crud. anyone have any thoughts or experience on this?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Hope you get mail from TP&W with a title or registration soon, B2. At least they didn't call the Texas Rangers and haul you off. LOL

On the tank purchase - the only bottom feeder part is buying the boat. After that - $$$$$$$$. I've turned a $250 tinny into a $1000 tinny and not too much to show. Yikes.

I think a lot of Chrysler parts are right from the cars, but I don't think they had any 4 cylinder motors back then.

I've thought along the same lines on the "sliders" except I was thinking about making bi-folds so only half the floor space would be needed to open them. And hingeing on the outside so the doors aren't in the way when I crawl under the splash well.

Glad the title business might be almost over and watch out for the critters.

b2 - Hope it's not a Brown Recluse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider

My sliders were sticky. After the front panel of the splash was repaired and raised up to it's original position, they work great. They have about a 1/4" of play in the track, enough room for dirt and crud and still work.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanx Osby.....hadn't through of that......my splashwell is pulled down due to transom flexing rearward from motor weight....transom is separated from splashwell by a good 3/8" gap in the center. i need to pull boat up to other driveway so i can hoist motor off....haven't yet decided on whether to make up a "proper" enigne stand from 2x6 or to just chain it to my appliance dolly for a few weeks.

i suspect the spider may have been a widow or recluse. i never saw it but most species of spider don't have the venom to do what i'm seeing. dead tissue is now abt size of a dime and looks like a scab or skin that's run into carburetor dunk-tank solvent.

but that's OK, cuz Mister Brown Truck just brought me a big box o'love for the console. i be a wirin' fool tonight......:D

A box of goodies heals all wounds. Keep an eye on the bite. If you think you might to see a Doc, you do!

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=509269&page=2 look at post 28, shows my repair of the front of the spashwell. I didn't see it when I picked up the boat.

If it's a recluse or a widow you might want to see a Doc, don't want any long term negative effects.

Those Brown trucks are like Santa. Good look on the wiring b2

Hey B2 , your making good progress, I guess one good thing about living up here in the great white north is we don't have them nasty little critters. Hope it heals up okay.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks for posting that link. so your transom was OK and it was just the splashwell that was messed up?

black widow bites have no long term effect on lawyers, not a negative one anyway.....professional courtesy and all that;)

no wiring last night. figured out that i managed to cut my console sections just sliiiightly off square, about 3/32" over 45" height. and i already have bracing etc glued in place, so i spent eve trying to figure out how to do a kludge to get it together without too much visual imperfection or weakness. who hired that moron carpenter anyway?

i like the fact that Faria's box on the gauge set includes a template. how are y'all cutting speedo and tach holes? not sure i have a hole saw that big. fly cutter, or great faith in your jigsaw work?

i did get the last few items off topsides and pulled all old wiring from hull, and figured out how i'm going to do the bulkhead that will extend straight down from old dash to give me dry lockable storage in bow. debating back and forth on whether to keep the parcel tray, but currently leaning towards yanking it to get the extra 5" of open space. might be able to section it and re-use elsewhere in boat.
