Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

got one half of the transom sandwich cut out last night but i seem to have left camera at home. really a pain trying to use badly bowed old tranny as template and lay out reliable lines on slightly pretzeled plywood sheet. am i just bad at this or a bad saw hand, or does everyone else's top edge look poopy til you drop the AL cap on too? i'm sure the avg 5 hrs/nightof sleep this week didn't help but it can't be all that.

next Q: i need to re-rivet down one of the stringers and replace some rivs on the other. i'm assuming that for stuff like this and other interior construction, plain 3/16 AL poprivets will work OK?

apparently there is no escape from tin....spent sevl hours up on metal roof fastening down our new solar panels...pair of 135w (if you ever buy solar panels, check shipping prices before you total order....cost to ship two was = cost to ship one so i bought a second one) to run the fridge. creek was way low, worse than i've ever seen it. i worry about fire season.......

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

came home exhausted from cabin at abt 1130 sunday night, and work is back up to insane, so i'm not getting much done on boat in eves. i did get the last floor section mostly cut out, and did a bunch of work on the wiring.

Brown truck guy came by to give my dogs some exercise and also left me some goodies:
P1010639.jpg

that there is a $129 distributor cap. platinum contacts no doubt. but try finding one of these anywhere but through Franz. his prices are really very fair and service is great, and he's spent way too much time answering my Qs for the profit he makes on the parts. i had to economize and get the plastic rod holders for now. figure they'll be easy to upgrade later when i can afford another $200 for stainless ones.

i didn't know they made these---weld-on skeg to replace the one the PO ground off. less than $35 and they make em for Murkcruisers too. also got a lower unit seal kit as i figure even with using TIG, enough heat will be transferred into lower unit housing to make old seals suspect.

laying out the electrical "subpanel" that will be mounted in the console (keeping it removable in case i need to pull it to upgrade electrics etc). note to self: use something beside a Sharpie for labeling next boat's electrics, or wait til after you've laid on some epoxy....xylene i use to thin the epoxy makes the ink spread
P1010641.jpg

close up of panel....the two 4ga wires at bottom are the main feeds from the house and starting batteries, and the red/black 10ga wires running up and to right are the power feed for switch panel in dash. single 10ga power feed to fuse panel will run all electronics and horn. small bilge pump is wired direct to battery rather than through main battery switch, so i can leave it operative in case of rain etc even if rest of boat is switched off.....using a 3 way switch to allow me to kick it on manuallly or just when the float switch trips.
P1010642.jpg

test fitting it all in place. still need to make up tiedown arrangement for batteries, but it's starting to look like a console and not just a carpentry project. i still have a lot of stuff to screw n glue together but figured it would be easier routing the wiring first.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

yah, IM, wish i had the time off work to go play with all of it. still waiting on 9' VHF antenna and debating whether to mount it on console or gunwale. anyone have thoughts? gunwale would be far more convenient to live with when antenna is lowered, console would simplify wiring and raise antenna another 18-24"....with a 6dB gain antenna, this means a theoretical difference of about 2-3 miles range.

i wanted to test fit the tank but need to get floorboards in first. it does look like it will fit just fine where the old one went. i;'ve gotten nearly all ignition sources out from under the splashwell; should i still add a fire suppression system?

on the transom wood, should i trim it so it's exactly level with top of aluminum skin?

Jas and EZ, thanks, never would have figured out the photo thing without your help.

You flyline a caballito perfectly out to a lonesome kelp patty..Your lil sardine is nervous, you feel his twitch, it rattles up your rod and settles into your left eye..He twitches again..Your eye blinks in unison..faster & faster line leaves your spool like a senorita mistress at 4 am..THERE HE GOES!!!! Your tip dips with weight, real weight and you have a hardfighting Yellowtail screaming line off your spool louder than a 2 year old brat's temper tantrum, do you want 9 feet of VHF in your way as you follow your beast up the rail?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

good point, Kev. i can see you understand why i have trouble getting all that excited about walleyes and channel cats in the NM lakes. i bought the racheting mount so i can drop it flat on short notice as needed.

a few hours last eve, not too productive. got the ACR and most of the rest of the "console" electrics (as distinguished from the "dash" and "hull" electrics) mounted and wired but that was about it. not even worth shooting a pic. now i'll have to pull it all back out so i can epoxy inside of console and finish corner bracing. it's frustrating moving this slowly but it would be more frustrating to have to rip apart and redo something cuz i hadn't considered some clearance issue. also frustrating being old and tired every night after work....when did this old age stuff sneak up on me?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks Bunker. i think it was just seeing lots of folks start and finish their boats and i didn't even have the astroturf out yet. i still need to get after the hull interior with the Gluvit etc

i have a Q for those who have mounted sonars. my current one is 300W RMS and i'm looking at a 500W RMS one since current one only has 800' depth capability. i know for a stereo amp that shoves out 500w RMS, you need massive power cabling like 6 or 8 gauge. 300W = 28ish amps at 12v and 500W = 42 amps. this will be one big honking wire to keep below 3% voltage drop. am i really going to need to wire in a 45-50 amp circuit to run a big sonar? i have the feeling i'm missing something cuz the unit i use in the portabote runs on two 6v lantern batteries for a week.

Most of my life was spent off shore San Diego/Mxican waters chasing Albacore, Yellowfin, Bluefin, Big Eye tuna..not to mention Yellowtail, Dorado and Wahoo. Killed the Wahoo in Cabo my one time down there.
Sooooo....I hear you on the catfish nonsense. I dont want to go tarpon fishing here..why? You dont eat it so why bother?
Think Shark is my only real challenge locally
