Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

got a little done last few days but not much. dropped floor sections in for test fit and they seem to fit OK. a few minor trims, cut the holes for the deck access plates (to access the cables etc routed under floor), re-epoxy the cuts and i'm rivetin and nautolexing......hopefully i can make some decent progress tomorrow between the heat and the rains. i'll get some pics up Thursday.

hope everyone has a great 4th!

It was a brutal 86-94 here ALL week. 98 degrees predicted by Friday! Low 80's next week, ahhhh.

B2, I've learned not to mess with a women when her family gets her riled. I like to fly under the radar.

Nautelex, oohhh. I can't wait, that is on my wish list for the Offshore.

i was looking at the Nautolex last night and wish i could install it upside down.....white surface so it'll stay cooler in the sun, and it feels much softer to walk on. weird, huh?

pic uploading is on hold for moment. something wrong with Photobucket, can't get it to let me upload and screen looks "wrong". maybe manana? i did make a bunch of progress yesterday but not as much as i'd hoped....last minute invite to a brunch 2 coworkers were doing, then i had to sleep it off.... am i getting old or what?

more pix

i had this floor spotless just before the hard rain we got....more carp from under ribs. and i've decided the old hacksaw blade is the #1 all time best tool for cleaning limber holes
P1010796.jpg

minor booboo due to old floors being too rotted at sides for good template
P1010797.jpg

the Harbor Fright drill finally gave up the ghost....came apart in my hand while i was sawing holes for rod holders....in fairness to HF, it had been dropped pretty good before this, and i have one of their cordless that i've dropped from top of my cabin (maybe 15' fall) and am still using

and the obligatory Dog picture

he was really surprised when he woke up after the epoxy set up and he had a transom attached to him...

Brunch on the 4th with a maybe a few adult beverages sounds great. Napping it off is better than using power tools. Not older just wiser.

Nice work on the floor and trim, keep it up.

Added - On tools I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I have a few 15 to 20 year old Milwaukee's that just keep cranking. A new switch or a set of brushes and there good for a few more years. But you could probably get 3 HF drills for the cost of 1.

Looks like good stuff, B2. Hey - Dog hair is kinds like adding chopped strand to the resin, makes it stronger. Course the dog looks like he has mange but it will grow back. LOL

Do not buy HF tools UNTIL your ready to use them. Preferably the day of, then use the poop out of them. I've bought some impact sockets at HF and just used them as regular sockets. Very satisfied, good value. The Chinese do not know how to vulcanize rubber though. Some days when the get new stock in my eyes water from the bad smell of uncured rubber products. lol

The Holiday is taking shape Bruce. Keep on truckin'.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

you hit it on the nose. they can do mild steel more or less OK, the heavier and cruder the better (the ideal tool to buy from HF: a T-post driver), but any plastics/rubber seems to be 50s level technology. this is why i only buy OEM gaskets etc for the Toy rather than getting the aftermkt, prolly-made-in-China ones from Otto zone et al. i know that "harbor freight odor" all too well....even the boxes smell of it. i do have to give them credit for honesty....as opposed to all the outfits that now make their crap in China and then glitz it up to try to disguise this fact and charge nearly-real-tool prices for it, at least HF is honest about where it's made and how crude it is, and prices it accordingly.

hopefully i'll be able to post some pics with all floor panels down by Monday

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

OK, i feel intimidated to post my paltry progress after all youse guys is splashin yer boats....

first order of biz was to beef the vertical bulkheads where my holes for rod holders left em flimsy

P1010807.jpg

P1010808.jpg

got the transom dropped in for test fit and drilling but not done yet....i figure i should also drill my holes for the supplemental knee braces and the swim step now so i can epoxy all holes and cuts before i drop it back in for good.

then it was on to bow reinforcement. i wanted to beef the bow skin for walking up there, and the center board underneath the bow llight, cleat, and horn was rotted a bit due to water intrusion, but i'm too lazy to pull bow cap off to remove and replace it. SO:
P1010812.jpg

closer view:
P1010811.jpg

reinf is 1/2" oak, flexes slightly but strong. i soaked it in extremely-thinned epoxy first, and then screwed it to all 3 longitudinal beams. i will need to either counterbore for two of my cleat screws or else find 10-24x3" screws somewhere. but now i don't see my cleat coming loose unless the whole front end tears off the boat. once this is done, i'll stick a bunch of foam up there.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

floors in! at least for test fit and drilling.
P1010813.jpg

i'm going to add three deck access plates
P1010814.jpg

and cut opening in rearmost section out to width of stringers so i can add knee braces.

i cut two hunks of 2x2 L-channel for brackets to bolt to transom, and then am going to use more of the stuff to tie those brackets to the stringers, for additional "knee brace" support. this was going to be just gravy on top of the factory's work, then i found the crack in my knee brace. anyone whose transom is bowed, look closely at this. so i need to decide whether to just add another brace or to haul the boat up to my friend to TIG it. leaning towards former since i have a good brace figured out, but til i drop the transom in for good, it's still open. any input?

finally, i HAD to drop the seat and console in so i could make vroom vroom noises
P1010815.jpg

P1010817.jpg

P1010819.jpg

and to start figuring out how far forward or aft to put it so i can begin to route cables

console is so tall it feels like a lectern or pulpit, makes me want to preach the Gospel o Tin to the multitudes......but too late to cut it down now.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Watch out guys, Barato is makin' motor boat noises. ;) I was wondering how the closed bow would look with the CC. Pleasantly surprised, it looks good. More room in front than I envisioned.

BTW - How did the motor sound?

Lookin good man, that is one heck of a pulpit you got going there...whats the seat for? ain't no way you can see over top LOL Looks like you did the dash in 2 pieces? Is that solid oak? OK I'll stop asking questions now. Good to see someone else was "working" over the weekend

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

correct on all counts. i like the dark better too, but that's part of the Mexibrew assortment i laid in when Kev was coming to town a few weeks back. and it was either motor noises or start working on a mast and keel setup.

CPT-- i left the original dash in place. what you're seeing is two pieces of 1/8" oak plywood (more like paneling, really, but it is real oak at least on the top veneer) that i saturated with epoxy and am going to glue in place to cover the gauge etc holes in the orig dash. wish i'd done it last night as we now have a week of rain forecast and i'll never get the base wood dry enough to glue covers to.

you're quite right on seat. i wondered when i built the console if it would create issues with seat height, and you see the answer. planning on building a box to mount it on, but still thinking on whether i can/should make it big enough to stow addtl fuel or just minimum size for maximum floor space. i also may get another seat as this thing ain't big enough for my fat nalgas and has low back.....i liked the $170 with pedestal part, and quality is good, but it's just too small to sit in for 8 hrs/day. may have to drop the big bux on a ladderback etc chair.

Floors in yippeee!! Center console and a closed bow. How'd I miss that? Do you have any pictures of the floor layout. What's going on with the gas tank? Under floor or on top?

motor?? OK I get it pretend motor. I'm a l i t t l e slow tonight. I got excited there for a minute. I like that Chrysler. I'm basically feigning interest in the boat waiting for the motor to fire up. lol
