Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

one of the cutouts came in useful. when i JB'd the patches to the underside of the gunwales, the one big one where a rod holder used to be sagged a little bit....should have clamped or wedged it.

WHY I SAVE SCRAPS:
P1010764.jpg

perfect fit!

slathered the thinned epoxy into the end grain on the transom....got 4 oz of resin/xylene mix into the one edge alone...... i was watching it get sucked in and the air bubbling out as it filled the voids between cellulose fibers

weight of the old Jetson light had buggered up the gunwale top pretty well, and i wasn't able to beat it back into shape from below....just lacerated hand/wrist every time i tried. hopefully you can see the distortion against the straight edge:

so i cut a plate to fit over the bad area from an old hunk of Lone Star....it will be screwed through the gunwale to the reinf block below and then covered with durabak when i hit the touch-up round:

I like the teak rod storage mounts.
It's a nice touch.

That plate looks like a good idea for the stern light.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks, Dirty.

i did the teak cuz i figured if i was building a faux Mariner, i needed rod holders. sawed a 4-rod set in half to make two 2-rod sets. but we're now at about 6 coats of varnish and still going......

the plate is pretty necessary...the alum underneath is so warped, i doubt i could put enough 5200 into there to seal it fully

Teak is an awesome wood. I like the progress, the Durabak looks nice. I may copy that. Poor LoneStar.

So are you and Kev going to sit in the Holiday and make motor noises? Pretend you're reeling in yellowtail?:p

Poor Lone Star is right, you should see the results of my first tinnie resto before i met the Starmada. the mods on all other tinnie manufacturer forums should sticky a link to this place as the Fount of Tin Knowledge.

i'm hoping to harness Kev's homesickness and missing his boat, and put him to work on sanding the hull exterior. don't tell him. oops....

got back from a scary weekend in the mountains. our creek is completely dried up, only 1 trout left in a remaining deep pool. gonna be a heck of a fire season, i fear. come on rains!

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT: no, the rivets holding the stringers to the floor from the factory are not 1/8 OR 3/16".....couldn't figure it out til i stumbled across a pkg of 5/32" rivets in the rivet box....perfect fit. i used these to "tack" stringers in place and then drilled out most of the others for 3/16". the 5/32 also work well for where the holes were drilled a bit too close together for the heads of 3/16" rivets to fit.

and that's about all the progress in the last 3 days aside from a few more coats on the Endless Epoxy Trail......dang root canals, don't those endodontists know i got a boat to restore? hurts more now than before they did it.......

thanks Kev! real pleasure finally meeting you too! even if i didn't get any sanding labor out of you......;)

now that you've seen my boats, you'll know how NOt to do it on yours......

folks, can you believe it? it was a mere 102 degrees when he arrived, he told me it was too hot to work and that we should just drink beer instead....and he claims to be from FLORIDA??? on the other hand, he didn't insist on taking either boat pasture surfing so i should be glad

off to Burque this weekend. don't tell the tinheads but i may drag the Admiral to go look at a (gasp!) glasser that's on CL
http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/boa/3085689828.html not exactly bottom feeder $ there, but about what one like this goes for. think a 26' Chieftain with very low fuel costs............... if i get this, would sell one of the SCs and the 25' Mac

Kev couldn't deal with the low humidity. LOL Macgregor's are nice. Good performance under power and sail. And never out of power. No wind fire up the motor. No gas, hoist the sail. Well, no gas and no wind, brake out the ores (sic)

Those might be more fun as Winter Olympic games:cool: If sliding is allowed, the ice may help improve your distance measurements. If it's an all aerial flying event, well may be not, the summer would be better. Either way, extra points should be awarded for style & flair during the trailer dismount....

As Summer Olympics, barato2's neck of the 'woods' could host the events. The Admiral has requested the official event adult beverage be the Prickly Pear Marqaritas.............

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

white belly of death too.....you should see how the moths are attracted to the reflection from the 500w light. makes it hard to work when they're in my eyes. my wife must be a very brave woman not to run away screaming.

not much progress here lately. over 100 degrees every day, and it was 92 at 10:30 last night. the other night i saw 80 at 4 am! varnishing is tedious but languidly dragging a brush across a surface is about all i've felt like doing this week. now that the stringers are riveted down, i was able to drop the first floor section back into place.

did some measuring and i'll need to build a seat support box to raise it to where ti's comfy to drive sitting down with my extra-tall console. debating between just big enough to support the seat solidly while leaving the max foot room, or making it big enough for some storage or even fuel tankage beneath. any input or experience appreciated!

anyone have any wizardry on anything that will dissolve RTV silicone? i have to get a bunch out of the frames for the "eyeball" lights so i can re-seal em with 5200. it's down into crevices etc so will be hard to scrape/wirebrush out, but the frame is cast alum so it will stand up to whatever solvents i throw at it. when i'm elected despot of the world, i'm going to forbid the use of RTV, by everyone but myself....

oh, and no, i chickened out on broaching the idea of a $15K boat to the Admiral. she has her whole family coming into town for annual reunion this weekend and is a little stressed out right now. i think the best way to bring up the idea would be "honey, how many other projects would i have to sell for you to let me buy this?" but GA, i agree....it's the perfect retirement boat (old farts not in a hurry and with no $ for fuel) and perfect for less than expert sailors ("oh no, we've lost the mast and we're 200 meters off a rocky lee shore in gale force wind! i guess it's time to fire up the honda and motor on out of here..."). which is not to say that i won't still have one or 3 SCs......

If you invent RTV-Gone be sure to patent the stuff. Then you can spend royalty $$$ on any boat you want and practice MBS with no "Evil Eyes" from the Admiralty cause the Tin Crowd alone will make you rich! My prior owners used RTV for everything, including the screws holding down the PT floor. So nice to protect the junk that eats a tinny from the inside out.
