Wow, glad you found the culprit, but sorry to know you now have for 700$ in spare elec parts! I hope you'll be able to use them on Franck the Second one of these days...

LOL, the next motor.... sure... you must be joking.... LOL... Truth is, it's sitting right next to me, I blasted it last week. It's a sweet little virgin 2L just waiting for me to give her a massage.

What will be interesting with Frank is to see how much better the fuel economy is. I am amazed at how well the fuel is being delivered to the cylinders. I figured it was going to want more but it actually needs less. It actually makes sense if you think about it.

Here's Frank all loaded up and ready for the lake tomorrow..

Wow, that 18ft hull will definitely fly with a tuned 150! Do yo think you'll reach the 60mph mark? (BTW i'm pretty sure you stay within the manufacturer max hp range, right? ;) Oh, i forgot, you were the manufacturer! )

Shud hit 60's it chine walks at 56 I think I got enough to push through it.

ROFLOL>....... Rated HP is, uhhhh,, yeah I think.. no maybe.... Not sure where that label is. I think it disappeared when I restored the boat... LOL>>:D:D:D:D

It'll be a few weeks before I have enough hours on it to see what it will do. After it's good and broke in, I'll put a few more go fast goodies on it.

Frank Gets Wet - The Video's

Frank Gets Wet - The Video's

This first vid is getting Frank fired up. I first tried with no throttle and no choke. I could tell there wasn't any fuel in him which was a good thing. I then tried just throttle, then throttle and just a light touch on the choke and finally a little throttle and about 3 seconds on the choke.

First in the water start -

This next video is the begining of break-in.

And finally the run to a short WOT and busting through the chine walk... Then back down. I kept running it up and down, staying away from the deadly 3-4000 RPM range for any length of time. Got greated by the Coast Guard at the dock. No biggie they were admiring the boat (checking it out too). One remark that was made that ya'll might think about. I got a big compliment for having my portable VHF radio on channel 16 and my ditch bag. They never even looked at the USCG placard with the 115 hp limit stamped on it.

So this sort of officially closes the book on the FrankenMerc project. I hope those of you that are following it can use it to avoid some of the problems I ran into and to complete your motor project with the same level of success as I have found.

Thanks

Now what do I do with this... Yep, she's a virgin and a complete motor from prop to cowling.

Thanks Ken,, yeah it was shorts and a sweatshirt. Little smoke (steam) on the water. I was pretty much alone out there so I wasn't complaining.

Steve,

All I can say is WOW. Another amazing project. I just read your 1991 V135 - Project Engine thread yesterday, and followed through on your suggestion I read this one. (4 hours and counting - gone through a pot of coffee!)

It'll be fun to hear how fast the boat scoots (top speed and accel) when the engine is fully broken in relative to the 135.

Not to bring you down or anything but here in Canada I was told by an Insurance Agent (when I bought insurance for my "new to me" boat last Friday) that if I exceeded the Rating Plate supplied by the boat OEM (Larson in my case - @ 125 HP) the insurance covereage would be invalid. Does that hold true in the USA at all?

Thanks again for the great Thread!

My commitment to finish the project is done. I have no further obligation to remain a member of this board.

Good bye to all.

Don't email me, don't PM me and don't call me. I've checked out.

SS glad to see all your hard work pay off...Frank is truly a unique piece of machinery:)

Sorry to hear that you won't be posting anymore, the info you provided in this rebuild thread is truly priceless.

Keep in mind you are always welcome over in the Starcraft forum here on iboats...since you now have the fastest Starcraft in the world:D

(The previous record-holder is 86Century...his rig got close to 50mph with a factory 150 Merc if I remember correctly).

You can check out but you can never leave:

now when is that merczilla project?

Sorry no merczilla project. I looked around the shop and saw all the money sitting there and said... enough is enough. Being OCD is not as much fun to experience as it is to watch.

I'm back to boat building again. I don't seem to get as obsessed with it and tend to stay on track with the budget. The budget for this is one,(http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=414556) is $35,000.00 over 3 years, (972.22 per month @ 0% interest). Boats of the same quality and style average around $70,000.00 retail.

No merczilla?....dang i guess i'll just have to wait & settle for upgrading my 850 with some flame decals. Good luck with the boat project, tig welding is another set of skills and almost an art.

Get together with Faztbullet he's a inline guy I think.

TIG is less difficult then getting a good gas weld. The principal is the same but 1000 times more controllable and precise. The biggest thing with TIG is cleaning your material.

After a couple of hours of messing up... er I mean practicing and several hours of study time I was laying down some really nice beads. With Helium added I can get up to about 10 in per minute and that's not too shabby.

My TIG machine is so versatile, you can weld most anything with it. When you can't TIG just switch to a stick and continue. For quick and dirty welding, I still use my MIG because it sets up faster.

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

sschefer,

Glad to hear you are not leaving the board but rather moving onto other projects.

Could you enlighten me how the performance was for this unit (versus the motor it repolaced) when you finally got it broken in?

Thanks for the update.

By the way, I used to TIG for work => electrical connections - copper mostly and aluminum when I had to. I loved using it on Stainless. It's far nicer than any stick I used (AC or DC). Sometimes I'd use it to attach balance weights to rotors and armatures.

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

Jim, I cut the heads and brought the compression up to 135lbs. I was out today and had no problem turning a 19p Laser II at 7,500 RPM's. With the 1.87 lower it's like running a 21p prop. I was changing jets all day and think I've got it dialed now. My last run I saw the tach run past 7,500 but she got a squirley on me and I wasn't ready for it so I shut it down. I'm going up early in the morning and try to hit 8,000 and hope I have a chance to look at the GPS.

I picked up a nice kevlar jacket and I think I'll wear it tomorrow just in case it gets away from me.

It's definitely a rush...
