Thanks EZ.
There it is right in front of me! I think I hit the tab key and it sent the message before I was done with it. Oh well...

Re: The Old Holiday

Okay...back again...
Well today in spite of the rain I did manage to get a lot done.
I was actually able to get the seats out of the garage and now I can walk in there! Anyway, here is one as it came out of the box...

...after assmbled I placed it in the boat just to get a feel for where it should go. I sat on it, yes I got soaked, but I did manage to get it all lined up so I could put it in a good spot. I also left enough room so if I had to stand I would have enough room in front of the helm. The seats are a very nice height and should be pretty comfortable.

I marked where the other should go as well and placed that one in there too. They are the kind of seat that opens up into a bench. What I did do however was I replaced the standard screws which were plated with stainless ones.

...it got pretty dark when I placed them in there and I thought the day was over, but I kept going in spite of the rain. It wasn't coming down too hard so...

Re: The Old Holiday

...the gas tank is in there but not secured yet. I just wanted to get an idea where it fit best. It's been so long since it was last in there. Gee I think it was late May or June. It's a Tempo 18 gallon tank. The paint worked well on it after it was primed. I painted the hold down brackets the same textured stone paint.

I had a cover made for it a long time ago. Gosh it had to be twenty years ago , about the same time we put the Mercury outboard on it.
I thought it's as good a time as any so I got it out and cleaned it off a bit...

I do have to put more snaps on the gunwales as the others had long ago disappeared. I did put some new "Lift the Dot " posts on and backed them up with nylon nuts.

I put all of the cover on so I could align where the new snaps will have to go and it was really cool to see her getting all dressed up again!

Looking good! That cover is nice for camping in the boat if you wanted to I'd imagine.:D

To fill the gas tank does it go straight into the tank below or is there a fill line somewhere?

Re: The Old Holiday

I went back to the basement and got the side windows out and just had to see the whole thing on there so on they went. It was nice as I said and more importantly, I was able to line up where the new snaps will go.

I figured it was time to quit after that, besides I was soaked and tired.
It's funny because as I sit here and write this, it's finally starting to clear up.
I think it's time for a beer. I hope to have more pics tomorrow.
Be careful,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

With only one stringer I would think its one of the shorter holidays as my 16' Jupiter has 2 stringers

What is the length of the old holiday?...didn't see it posted in the thread anywhere.

Thanks Huron Angler,
The tank has a fill on the top surface of the bow. There's a hose that goes down to the tank on one side and then vet is on the other. I think you can see the fill in the pics. It's on the starboard side just in front of the windshield.
The boat is an 18 footer. I'm sure you're probably right, I don't recall mentioning that.

Thanks Rick,
I think you're doing a great job yourself. Tinstock ought to be a nice showcase for these old boats with all the great color schemes etc...
They,3M, have a tape for freshly/recently painted surfaces. It's still blue, just make sure the edges are all down. I've used it with success on other things. Although I think if I had come that far, I'd not take any chances and wait as well.
Talk to you later,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

I was able to get a little more done on Friday. I was at work yesterday so that beautiful day was out. Anyway, I managed to get all of the snaps for the canvas work in place on the gunwales. It was tougher than I thought because I couldn't get my arm up in there to get underneath. I managed, but in the process mangled my arms pretty well. I used stainless screws through the snap and then on the underside, I used a nylon wing nut. I put the 5200 on the screws and the underside of the snaps to keep water from getting comfortable in there.
I had decided a while ago that I needed a shut off of sorts for the battery and figuring maybe one day adding another battery, I opted for a Perko battery disconnect. It installed easily and I put it on the face of the splashwell.

Of course I tested it out and yeah the old gal fired right up. The tach was doing something, although it wasn't by any stretch accurate so I need to look into that. I still have no idea what the deal is with the trim gauge, but it does look nice!
As far as the wiring goes, the rest of it appears to be working just fine. I have been toying with the idea of putting replacable fuses in the mix as the fuse protection now is provided by the switches themselves right now. Not a bad setup, but it could be donw the road.
Anyway, today is another day and I'll see what damage I can do. I have a lot of little things to do. I am still trying to figure out how to repair my Starcraft emblems. One has a broken "A" and the other has a broken "F". I'll try and get the vinyl inserts in for the lower rub rails and then a couple of handles, hoses, etc...
Be careful,
John

Rick,
I may do that thanks... I had another "quality " day today pictures to follow hopefully tomorrow. I am pretty much done except for the numbers on the hull, the motor decals, and maybe one or two other little things and it's ready. I do have to get it registered still.
Anyway, be careful,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

Thrillhouse,
Thanks for the kind words. You'd be surprised just how quickly the tear apart stage becomes the restore/refurbish/replace stage and beforeyou know it, it looks like a boat again. Everyone on here finds "stuff" that needs to be taken care of in one form or another. I am pretty sure after reading about all of the talented people on here, that someone can help you out. Many of the guys may have already had the same "stuff" that they had to fix themselves.
As far as the seats go, when I was in the tear apart stage I went to a local, 45 miles away, Boater's World. I know the store closed but I am not sure if the web site is still selling things. They are Wise seats, the twelve inch bases.
Be careful,
John

Nice thanks for the info. Yeah, I got a couple things bouncing around in my head with the tri-hull I need to find fixes for. There used to be a boaters world in cali, I think that's what it was called but they went under a while back. Either way can't wait to see the finished pictures.

Re: The Old Holiday

Okay, let's see... I got the rubrails all squared away. After I finally got it all stripped of paint and cleaned the vinyl it actually appears to be a very light blue/gray combination.

I had polished the "spears" for lack of a better term. I sealed the screws and the backs of them with 5200

Re: The Old Holiday

... I hooked up the fuel tank fill and also the vent. Kind of hard to see in the pics but they're there. The "dot" in the foreground just in front of the windshield is the vent. I wish I had time to have them rechromed, at least the fill. The vent I'm afraid has some pretty deep marks in it. It looks as though someone tried to either take it off, or put it in with a pipe wrench.

8-16-2009_009.jpg
[/IMG]

You can't really see it in the pics, but the fuel tank is in and all squared away as well. I just put the six gallon one in to get the motor running. I will at some point find a place for that as well. I think a couple gallons at a time would be better than a lot of gass just sitting in the larger tank as today's gasoline doesn't last long at all. That's another subject entriely.

8-16-2009_007.jpg
[/IMG]

I also put on some brass corners to finish off the dashboard a bit. I sealed them as well with the 5200...

Lastly, I replaced the "handles" on the stern , they could be newer, but these are servicable right now so I used them. Next, I got some 5200 on the seams on the oak part of the outer transom . The stuff that was there was in pretty decent shape although it was stained a bit. I did scrape most of the old away first.

8-16-2009_008.jpg
[/IMG]

The light sitting there in the splashwell (Thanks Rick) needs to find a home as well. I had some hard rubber brackets that are on it in the picture, I just need to mount them somewhere out of the way...

I'm back at work today, so maybe this evening I'll get these old reflectors back on the stern and hopefully I can get the decals on the hull. The reflectors were there when my Dad bought the boat, so in keeping with tradition, I guess they'll go right back on it again.
Be careful,
John

Andy,
The vinyl was painted on mine along with the hull. It wasn't a very good job though and it had some dings in it so I removed the vinyl, scraped off most of the paint with an SOS pad, and soaked them in bleach for a couple of days. The upper rubrail vinyl still has some black staining on it. I am having a heck of a time getting that cleaned though. The aluminum frame is banged up in a couple of spots so I didn't even entertain the idea of messing with it...

Andy,
As I think of it, maybe that vinyl paint could be used. I'm not sure how it would hold up if it actually got "rubbed", but it may be worth a shot
