Re: The toughest brain teaser ever...

Not as sure about this one. Got a mental block.... All I've come up with is the train is going 20mph... the two 3 letter words (car and van) add up to 57mph, the lorry is 37, so the train (also 5 letters) has to be doing 20 (37+20=57).

Can't come up with anything better I'm afraid.

The first one was easy... You said addition... So I started to assign values to the letters and noticed the roman numerals... was easy after that... Your 'lend me your ears' was a great confirmation... Thanks....

Chris............

You're on the right track, but you're not quite there. Keep going.

For the rest of you, I gave achris another hint for #2 in a response to a pm a few seconds ago, and it would only be fair to give it to the rest of you.

the hint was: "I figured you would have decyphered it by now."

Ok, you convinced me to put in #3... here goes:

"SING" costs 7453, "RESIGN" costs 798546 and "REIN" costs 5734, what does "RISE" cost and why?

RISE cost 3295. Numeric progression of the value of each letter.

A swing and a miss! ;)

Very close though. Right reason (wrong answer) for the same question if the question was phrased differently. Kudos for taking a crack at it and getting that close though.

I figured this was a hint, but this old brain couldn't remember the statement: "friends, Romans, & countrymen, Lend me your ears" until now of course.

Nope. I'm surprised #2 is proving so tough.

Well it's been a couple of days now, so I'll spoil it for you... just add the letters... a=1 b=2 c=3 etc... you'll notice they don't add up to their original values. Van and Car are both just 1 less than their values, both have a vowel worth 1. If you don't add the vowels, they add up precisely, apply that to lorry and it works as well. Now simply add up TRN and you get 34. See? Just addition. :D

BTW oops, I posted a follow up on progress in the "what am I about to... thread".

Well, since no one has answered #3 correctly, here goes:

"SING" costs 7453
"RESIGN" costs 798546
"REIN" costs 5734
what does "RISE" cost and why?

RISE costs 6478 because the value of each letter rises then falls such as +1 -2 +1 in series. achris, you were THIS close... *showing a milimeter*

Might as well have shot for the moon. "Close" don't cut it where I come from... :(

Nice puzzles by the way, SM.

Your driving a bus and you pick up 4 passengers at the first stop. At the second stop 3 get off and 7 get on. Third stop and 4 get off and 9 get on. Fourth stop and 5 get off and 2 get on... What colour are the drivers' eyes?

This photo was taken about a mile from the bottom of the ski lift :D, and those bumps in the background are volcanoes! You can also see the frozen Avacha River...

Cheers....

Where are you? Oops was correct, in Russia. More specifically, the Kamchatka Peninsula.

You're from Australia, where it is currently summer. So for a river to be frozen, you've got to be in the northern hemisphere. Rivers and volcanos could be a lot of places, but the Avacha River is in the southwest Kamchatka.

Here's a link to a summertime photo of that same valley from a different perspective.

Where was I? Asleep.. We have a lot of night here :D:D

Yes, Oops is correct and you are even more correct.... To be completely accurate, I'm on top of Moroznaya Hill, 7 km out of Yelizovo, which is where we have a flat. It takes us 11 minutes to drive to the bottom of the run. It's rated as the third most difficult ski mountain in Russia. Most of Russia Olympic skiers are raised here. It's also where the Olympic team train.

And the names of the 2 volcanoes in both pictures? The taller one on the left is Koryakskaya and the one on the right is Avachinski (which is active) and a year ago I was skiing in the valley between them.:D

Cheers guys......
