Re: thinking about a new phone

Even though most consumers may only pay $200 up front for a high-end smartphone with a two-year service contract (plus the $35 upgrade fee), they still pay full price for that phone through the monthly service fee.
It's similar to buying a car with cash upfront or making a monthly payment. Almost always a better deal paying upfront.

When I get a phone, I keep it for a long time. Don't really get excited about having the latest and greatest.

Smart phones are for people who think way to much of themselves. It's a phone, nothing more. Make calls, any more you have a stuck on yourself thing.

Well that's a pretty dumb statement. It's a fun gadget. Nothing more. I don't really see how wanting a device that can hold and play all my music, allow me to download and listen to podcasts, use maps and navigation, jot notes, use the internet, play games, etc etc makes me "stuck on myself". Oh wait, I do also use it to browse Facebook and sometimes take pictures so I guess I must be:

Re: thinking about a new phone

These are great discussions. Iphone is coming out with another new model soon. Here's what I'll say. My work buys for me to keep the best, most expensive Ipad and Iphone...they even order them monogramed with my name. My wife on the other hand has all android based stuff including the new Droid Razr (she had an older droid for two years prior to upgrading) and an android based tablet. Her phone is far and away superior over my Iphone. It's just a better product and was cheaper. To me having had so much experience with both types of phones, I just can't see the argument for Iphones unless you get them free and don't have another option. The android tablet on the other hand has had a few quirks such as the camera won't work after an automatic software update but is much lighter and has a wider screen than my crazy expensive Ipad. She can add storage and has multiple slots as well while the ipad has none. I feel like the apple products would have been really cool and inventive 3 years ago but have been surpassed by quite a large margin. When I went to Iphone from Blackberry, of course anything is an upgrade over the Blackberry Bold, but this is like comparing my sig boat to a brand new Chaparral. My boat is great until it is side by side with a new one.

I think Apple make very good quality hardware, their software just needs to catch up.

Re: thinking about a new phone

My wife and I both use the same phone technology. We used to have Blackberry phones, the wife switched to the iphone and I followed. It just makes it easier to have one technology in the house.

The iphones still do everything we need and we are satisfied.

Do not get wrapped up in all the hype........ get something YOU are comfortable with.

And there's the key. Don't worry about what other people say or think. As long as you're happy with what you've got, who cares?

When my wife and I first made the move to smart phones, she opted for a Blackberry, and I went iphone. She hated hers, I was ok with mine. A few years later, she switched to an Android-based phone (don't remember which). I stuck with my iphone, didn't even upgrade. She had nothing but problems out of hers, mine went right on ticking (figure of speech, it didn't actually tick, for all the s-a's out there). Jump ahead another couple of years, and I have won her over to the dark side--we now both have iphones. I generally stay a model or two behind, just to keep from paying the newest-tax.

Neither of us does anything extravagant on our phones. Mine's mostly phone and both emails, with a few games, a little web surfing, and some texting thrown in from time to time.

Bottom line is, I don't care what the latest and greatest is. As long as what I've got does what I need it to, I'm good.

I had heard that but my first iphone was a dud. It would shut off all day long and refuse to start or even hard reboot and had to warranty a new one. Also the screen size is just a joke on the iphone. I liked the commercial for the iphone 5 when they tried to address the small screen size issue with a guy holding the phone and showed how it wasn't too small but instead made for ergonomic reasons. Another thing I dislike as a business traveler is the inability to swap out batteries. My wife's droid is that way too but how idiotic is that? When i got over the initial shock of the differences between any other phone and my former blackberry, the realization sets in that the iphone is the B squad and the then blackberry was the Model T of the phone world. As to the software issue, I can't tell you how many times I can't open a document in my email on the ipad. It just refuses to open them. Pdf's for example and I even have the PDF expert app.

Re: thinking about a new phone

I understand the removable battery issue. Now that I have a tablet, I don't have my phone powered up on flights so its power is not an issue anymore. I have an external battery for my Android tablet to charge it when i need to. It also does not have a removable battery.
Amazon.com: New Trent NT120T USB chargeable 12000mAh Heavy Duty 2A/1A Dual USB Ports External Battery Pack for the Latest Apple iPhone 5, the New iPad with Retina Display, iPad 2, iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS/3G, iPod Touch (all versions); Samsung Galaxy Note/N

There is a tradeoff on the removable battery. The manufacturer can put a much bigger battery in the phone and keep the phone slim if its not removable.

Another reason not to have LTE if you don't need it. Much lower battery use.

I have had way more software issues on my Android tablet than my iphone. Typically, have to uninstall the app and reinstall it fixes it though. Probably more the apps's issue than the OS though.

I use my iPhone as a thin client to control my PC at home. I can program in MATLAB, work on Excel, email myself forgotten documents, draft in AutoCAD, etc. I think you get the picture.

Is this your preferred writing utensil?

Think about how much you can get done with all that lead...

Meh - iPeople ;)

I'll stick with my Sonim rather than having to deal with some fragile toy made for teen aged girls

My Iphone battery is at the point of not holding a charge as long as it should...its maybe 8 months old. I ordered a new battery for it and the little tool kit and wouldn't you know it, the little plug in on the battery is slightly different than mine im trying to replacd. I also use the tablet on the plane but still can't get through a day with the phone. Any GPS or other apps and it just drains very quickly. Another thing that i've found with the ipad is that on multiple occassions it won't connect to the free hotel wifi. I just get an error message so have to use the data package instead which is really slow in some areas of the country. The iphone battery itself is really pretty small and thin.

That's true with any phone or tablet. GPS is a battery sucker and why I have it turned off on most apps that don't really need it.

My 2.5 year old iphone still holds its charge well. Of course I know how to turn off background apps. The best jailbreak app is one that kills all background apps with one touch. I use a similar app on my Android tablet.

Yeah I have to keep pretty much everything killed unless i'm actually using it at the moment. I only keep texting and phone active. Which kill app is that you speak of? As for the Ipad, that battery will let me watch videos and play from here to Hawaii. No battery complaints with the ipad.

KillBackground but you have to have your phone jailbreaked to use it. I actually don't have my phone jailbreaked at the moment. Will probably do it again once ios7 comes out. Ios 7 is supposedly going to have major changes. Hopefully, some of the features that the jailbreak community have come up with.

The way I see it if you can't be away from all this your hooked on yourself, as far as pics my dumb phone takes pics. I work to get out of touch rather than make it easier to find me. I quit going to a resort when they got a phone, so duh.

This could be said about any smartphone. Or any phone at all. A real man doesn't need a phone, if his car breaks down he just punches a bear in the face and rides it home.

Give me a break.

My point is you're the typical rabid anti-Apple zealot. I left a response as bait and your reaction was pretty predictable.
Now you're just being an ***. You do hear a lot of people repeating what I say...that's because it's true.

If you don't like Apple you don't have to buy their products, and you certainly don't need to mindlessly rant against them on the internet.
Somebody asked for advice on which phone to get. I didn't just call you out of the blue and tell you your phone is stupid. I'm giving them the best advice I can and hopefully they won't make the mistake of signing a contract with an Apple phone. There is nothing "mindless" about it.

the Note has many features that make it more suitable for the circus market.

Official phone of the Ringling Bros.
Seriously, how old are you? Official phone of the Ringling brothers, as well as 75% of other people who buy phones. How about you focus on what the phones can and can't do instead of trying to attack me personally?
