Re: thinking about a new phone

Smart phones are for people who think way to much of themselves. It's a phone, nothing more. Make calls, any more you have a stuck on yourself thing.
No, it IS a lot more. Welcome to 2013. I use my smartphone to keep in touch with my customers...answer emails...get notifications of emails/texts/messages...navigate using GPS...listen to music...send pictures to family and friends...yes, I am very stuck on myself.

If you want to work at McDonalds, live in a cave, get lost, and sit quietly in the dark...then I guess you don't need one.

Re: thinking about a new phone

Seriously, how old are you? Official phone of the Ringling brothers, as well as 75% of other people who buy phones. How about you focus on what the phones can and can't do instead of trying to attack me personally?

Are you really suggesting that the Note holds 75% of the cell phone market? Really? I think that's a pretty huge exaggeration.

I read it as though he attacked Note users in general, not you personally. Kind of like how you attacked iphone users in general in post #3.

Personally, I don't care what phone anyone has, or what their opinion of "my" phone is. If you want to look down on me for what type of phone I have, I think it says more about you than me.

Android has 75% of the total market. I believe Apple is somewhere around 14%.

He is attacking me directly. Re-read my quotes.

"the Note has many features that make it more suitable for the circus market. Official phone of the Ringling Bros."

I still believe that is an attack on the Note, rather than you directly. However, I believe you both have bashed each other with other posts.

And it looks as though Apples share is closer to 7% (as of August last year B4 the 5 came out). Now the 5 may have indeed increased share a little.

Samsung, Nokia, and Apple dominate phone sales in spring 2012 | Digital Trends

The whole point I would make is that if the Note works well for you then great. If the iphone works well for Nickypoo then that is great also. Neither preference means that individual is somehow less or more intelligent. No need to bash anyone (goes for Nickypoo to).

I agree completely with the whole standing in line thing. Goes for real popular movies as well. I just don't get it. Neither do I get trading your phone in on the latest model every year. Seems kind of silly. I've seen both android an iphone nuts do this so it's not just one platforms users.

Another thing I don't understand is the whole battery issue discussed earlier. I've had a 'smartphone' since 2008. Everyone I know has a smartphone and has had one for lengthy periods. I don't know anyone who's had battery issues. Not saying that isn't an issue, I'm just not sure it's as common as some have suggested.

Fishing Dude too, do NOT post again in this thread. This is a thread about smart phones. You apparently think they are stupid. No need to comment then.

Re: thinking about a new phone

Here's just a quick overview of the dialogue here...

Completely reasonable, rational contributions:

Wife got the Samsung Note, which was more expensive, (ATT prices) than the Iphone 5. it's also a physically bigger phone, which i really did not want.

The Google Nexus 4 is a great priced phone for a unlocked phone and then you can go with net10 or Straight talk plans which are way cheaper than ATT and Verizon plans.

WAtch out for the religious opinions on this topic as you will get it from both the apple and non-apple side. I have experience with both the Apple ecosystem (Itunes, Iphone, IPad, Appletv, etc) and my kids and wife have the Samsung SGII phones.

On the other hand, the non-apple phones have some features that Apple devices do not. For one, they are not in constant prop - non=prop content licensing struggles , Such as the Flash issue

I like the new Windows phones. It's funny they get a bad rap but when you let users compare them side by side with the competition the majority say the Windows phone best meets their needs.

Typically, major apps are always written for the iPhone before the Android. I know a few app developers and they say the same thing.

FWIW - here's what I did about 8 months ago: I opted not to renew my wireless contract and buy a Straight Talk plan. Since it was unlimited data, I got a smart phone. I opted for iPhone (it works well with Apple's native productivity apps which I like quite a bit), but decided against shelling out $500+ for a shiny new one.

The iphones still do everything we need and we are satisfied.*Do not get wrapped up in all the hype........ get something YOU are comfortable with.

I have a Samsung Reverb on Virgin Mobile. The Reverb has similar features and looks as the wildly popular Galaxy S4 just lesser performance. I got it on Amazon for $150. I've been happy with Virgin Mobile for the price ($35 a month for 300 minutes and "unlimited" text and data) and the service has only improved in the time I've had it. Sprint's network. VM has a new Samsung model, the Victory, that has pretty impressive specs for $250.

These are great discussions. Iphone is coming out with another new model soon. Here's what I'll say. My work buys for me to keep the best, most expensive Ipad and Iphone...they even order them monogramed with my name. My wife on the other hand has all android based stuff including the new Droid Razr (she had an older droid for two years prior to upgrading) and an android based tablet. Her phone is far and away superior over my Iphone. It's just a better product and was cheaper.

When my wife and I first made the move to smart phones, she opted for a Blackberry, and I went iphone. She hated hers, I was ok with mine. A few years later, she switched to an Android-based phone (don't remember which). I stuck with my iphone, didn't even upgrade. She had nothing but problems out of hers, mine went right on ticking (figure of speech, it didn't actually tick, for all the s-a's out there). Jump ahead another couple of years, and I have won her over to the dark side--we now both have iphones. I generally stay a model or two behind, just to keep from paying the newest-tax.

Not sure where you get your "facts".

For Smartphones:
comScore Reports February 2013 U.S. Smartphone Subscriber Market Share - comScore, Inc

51% Android
39% Apple

By manufacturer
Samsung 21%
Apple 39%

Apple is actually increasing its market share for the period nov12 to Feb13 compared to Android which is losing market share.

Now for the much less reasonable (or helpful, or rational, or sensible) contributions:

Iphones are for people that need to be told what to do and when to do it. If you walk around in a $500 pair of skinny jeans, then you probably want one. Otherwise, an Android phone is what you want to get things done.

I don't pay extra for inferior products that have fancy plastic cases.

Smart phones are for people who think way to much of themselves. It's a phone, nothing more. Make calls, any more you have a stuck on yourself thing.

If you want to work at McDonalds, live in a cave, get lost, and sit quietly in the dark...then I guess you don't need one.

And then there are my posts, which are designed to mock and parody the less reasonable posts.

To all the reasonable posters: good job. You are normal people who can successfully carry on a discussion without pointless diatribe.

LOL (that means laugh-out-loud ;) )

I just used my iphone 5 - out in the garage, to search for, locate and open, a 56 page service manual, showing me specifications on torque/ tightening sequence, for cylinder head bolts - ON A 40 YEAR OLD KOHLER GARDEN TRACTOR ENGINE.

What's a phone call? ;)

Re: thinking about a new phone

The first time I realized a smartphone would be valuable was when I was on a 100 mile bike ride down to San Diego and had a rash of flats and couldn't patch the old tubes. Along comes a guy with an iPhone and was able to locate the nearest bike shop in the next city. I was hooked.

Re: thinking about a new phone

Thanks for the responses. As for my usage. The standard phone and text, along with work and personal e-mail. Web surfing when I do not have access to my lap top, or am away from work. I gave up on having a home computer several years ago. But retained the DSL service along with the wireless setup I installed originally. This allows me access to the web through my phone using a wireless connection. Thus saving on "plan" data usage.

Reliability is another concern as the cell phone is my only phone. I discontinued my home phone service several years ago. My web research shows a higher rate of customer issues with the android based phones. But they are also used more than the apple by a 55 to 38 % rate. Also the apple software does not support "flash player" which is utilized by many web sites. What type of issue does this pose in real life usage??

Cell tower signal location and signal strength, effect any cell phone "reliability", more than being an iphone or android device, IMO. Apple had an antenna problem in model 4, but it's been fixed. I get good signal almost always, on model 5, traveling from NE Indiana to Chicago every day.

We had lousy ATT coverage at our house, effecting iphones and other makes (non android) about the same. The service was upgraded now all our phones, work fine.

Re: thinking about a new phone

Just dont sign a contract,,Why would a person want to make such a serious obligation set by rules they have no control over just to have a cell phone? Cell phones aren't worthy of contracts

I disagree, if one wants a smart phone and believe that the cell service is adequate.

The Apple iphone 5 is over $700 by itself (unlocked) I paid $200 (now as low as $127 - at best buy) with a two year contract at ATT. At my age, two years, fly by in an instant. If I have to cancel early, ill have to pay, but I have almost never had a cell phone service for less than two years anyway.

If one moves that can usually transfer the service at no cost.

The monthly service (at least ATT) is about the same for contract, no contract.

From the "news".
Android beats iOS 5-to-1 in Q3 smartphone market share | Mobile - CNET News

Let's recap, shall we? Android phones are available bigger, the same size, or smaller than an iphone. They have better screens, with higher resolution. Some come with a stylus. They have expansion slots. They have faster hardware. The battery is replaceable. They have more software available. They have more support available because there are more users. For all this they cost less.

What does the iphone do that an Android phone can't? Anything?

Re: thinking about a new phone

2 good articles with best about android and best about iphone:

10 Ways the iPhone 5 Beats Android Phones
10 Ways Android Beats the iPhone 5

LOL! That first one is a complete joke, read the comments. Most of that is just flat out false, though I'm not going to waste my time debunking it line by line. The second link you gave proves much of the first one wrong...

PS - I almost forgot. Apple refuses to use the standard micro USB charger that everyone else uses. Forget your charger somewhere and you won't be borrowing one. My Android tablet is the same way, (Acer) it uses a special charger and has a built in battery. I won't make that mistake again.
