Re: This is just SAD

I have never seen a boat that "can be left uncovered". Even if it has no upholstery, it still has paint or gelcoat. They fade and get flat. Even bare aluminum gets dull. Outboard motor covers lose their paint and decals in time. Non-maintained boats lose their value quicker. Even if you don't care about any of that, you still have a dirty mess to clean up every time you want to take it out.

My boats are all covered.............AND in a garage besides....LOL.

My oldest is a 1984 SeaRay bought new, and its condition looks like a 2009. I often get inquiries at the launch ramp to sell it and I have been offered more than I paid for it. Naturally I like it to look nice, but with proper care it can be an investment too.

Reelfishin, what you (and others) are seeing are non-boaters who own boats, and think they are like late model cars--maintenance free, turn the key and go; turn it off and walk away when finished. See it all the time in many examples of bad, careless and even dangerous boating. Ethanol has humbled many of them.
I expain to first-time boaters that a boat is as much like a car as a horse is like a motorcycle. And if you wanted to think about it like a car, it's like having a 50 year old sports car--requires care, storage, tinkering and an expectation of occasional unreliability. Not a 2 year old sedan.

This guy gets a little bit of a break b/c this snow is highly unusual as are hard freezes, and we don't know if he recently bought a crappy boat and hasn't started to restore or doesn't mind it being that way. What if he was shipped out to Afghanistan? The critics should feel guilty then. This isn't Minnesota.

As for covering every boat? That's opinion and preference, like keeping a car in a garage, under a carport, covered, all of the above, or leaving it outside--IF it is the waterproof kind as discussed above ad nauseum. It is not a rule, except perhaps as to sofa boats.

This topic being fresh on my mind, I was at the local Bass Pro and noticed all the sofa boats sitting out uncovered. Lots of dealers do that. They have to do it for marketing--but that is marketing at the expense of the sucker who buys it--unless there is a deep "floor model" discount--highly unlikely. Soif you're buying one new, order it!

This snow is highly unusual, but we definitely do get snow here, so I'm not cutting him a break. That Marina is 2 miles from my shop, and 20 miles from my home. We have a SOLID 2' additional out there now, it's incredible. Hopefully I can get out of here, and to the marina tomorrow.

Now if the guy is laid up or dead, or otherwise tied up, I can cut him some slack, otherwise, he's not too bright IMO.

the upper snow will melt first, before the bilge pump thaws, 99% the engine will get water into the intake. then they will wonder why they blew their engine.

if the bilge was working before the snow storm the boat didnt have any water in it...maybe...

then there might not be any ice in that boat....so when the snow melts the auto bilge could take care of the water....

this might be something unusual...even 3 months outside wont ruin a boat..

maybe the guy died!! and his wife doesnt know how to care for the boat...could be all kinds of reasons..

besides he doesnt care about his boat , or he doesnt care about things in general...or he is ignorant..

he leaves his car outside...why not a boat????

that kind of snow IS UNUSUAL for that area!!!!!! and prolonged snow is even more unusual..

DC set a record for snow fall already this winter!!!
and they are not done yet

boats drift away, boats sink at moorings, and boats get full of snow for all kinds of reasons.

In Long Island Sound the deserted islands are full of trashed boats that broke free and washed up on the shore...

So I got over to the marina this morning to make sure Arks boat was OK, and she is. She's floating level.

Anyway, I took another pic of the subject of this thread, she's still floating.

Nice update.

I wonder if the owner thinks his boat is 1/2 full or 1/2 empty with snow?

While I agree that winter storage in the water is a bit extreme, I can think of at least a half dozen boats sitting just like that on trailers in driveways right in my neighborhood.

You know, boats are meant to get wet, not like the front seat of your car. So, snow is just another form of water. You really don't need to cover it up. It;'ll be just fine.

Boats are designed to keep the water out . NOT IN. I'll be willing to bet as already stated by some of you that something happened to the owner. Somebody is going to be sorry anyway.

Wow! I couldn't treat a boat this way. Mine is sitting in my garage covered, I even pulled it out two weeks ago to fire it up and wash it. Heck it barely even rains here. But of course my 93 looks like an 09.

Glad to hear it's still floating!!! After today's rain I need to pop the covers on mine and give the inside a wipe down this weekend and let it air out.

Hey, maybe the owner knows what she's doing. All that snow will help insulate the engine compartment and improve chances that the block won't crack!:D

Still Floating......... Fu#@ing Bayliners are great, huh?

This is a situation when the marina should pull the boat and charge the customer/lein the boat. There is one marina in my area that seems to always have one or two boats left in the water. Really unsightly and doesn't say much for the marina (I've heard the owner is an ***, and so it goes...)

This marina has plenty of boats in the water, that's not the issue really. Some, like Arks, cover their boats properly and make sure they are OK during and after storms.

Here is his boat, 2 slips down from the snow laden Bayliner.

I have to wonder if the owner hasn't just abandonded it, and the finance company hasn't figured that out yet?

Everyone in the Restoration forum (like me) has a boat that was treated like that!!!

Could also be a situation where the owner knows exactly what is going on and is hoping it sinks so he can collect the insurance and pay off the bank.

Good point, I always forget there are deadbeats out there.
