So I'm catching up on the news tonight, and I come across an article from a respected news source about how cops in my state are being given the date rape drug Versed to use on prisoners. This is absolutely asinine! The excuse they have is that it's used to subdue unruly prisoners, but it can't be administered until a person is already subdued, so that's a bunch of bunk. I am absolutely outraged that such a thing could happen in this country. You can read the story for yourself here: http://www.wsmv.com/news/16844880/detail.html

You can bet I'm going to give my elected representatives a piece of my mind first thing in the morning...

The cops are administring the drugs.

I am really surprised this practice is being used, but as a LEO I can see both sides of the coin regarding the use of it.

You are going to complain about something that is working?

What would your solution be? A bullet to the back of the head? Maybe the Police and Prison Guards to resort to hugging upset people.

There is no valid reason for an officer to use a date rape drug on anyone, none whatsoever. It is absolutely outrageous!

You think having the police rape women is working? It's not working, it's nothing more than giving them a free liscense to commit rape. They already have to have subdued the person to administer the drug in the first place, so saying it's used to subdue someone that couldn't otherwise be subdued is absolutely bullcrap!

Be fair. Quit portraying the story like the cops are shooting up people with a drug off the street. The drug, an approved drug for the intended use, is being administered by medical professionals, who evaluate the patient and make the ultimate decision to medicate.

Hmmmmm. By that logic, SgtMaj, issueing guns to police officers is going to have them sticking up convenience stores.

I see no way to connect the legal use of Versed to "calm" unruly and violent prisoners and the illegal use of Versed by evildoers to "calm" rape victims.

As an alternative to beating heck out of the prisoners and risking injury to officers it sounds to me like a very good idea.

I'm not against using whatever force necessary to subdue an out of control suspect, but, This sounds like a civil rights violation to me! What, the tazer is not effective enough?

I think sometimes you can justify the use of drugs to subdue prisoners, especially in cases where there are psychiatric problems. However, Versed seems like a poor choice. Versed's main advantage is that it makes a person forget what happened to them while they were under the influence of the drug. That would seem to eliminate any accountability for what happens to prisoners once they have been subdued.

And before we get into rhetoric about whether or not prisoners have rights, think about the person referenced in the article. He had psychiatric problems which caused him to behave badly. There are also cases like that of Abner Louima, who was falsely accused of assaulting an officer and was beaten and repeatedly raped by officers while in custody.

Having memory of your treatment while in police custody is a pretty basic component of protecting your civil rights.

Re: This will make you mad...

First, if you want to discuss intelligently, call it by it's correct name - Versed, not date rape. It's a benzidiazeprine derivative just a bit stronger than Valium, another benzidiazeprine derivative.

Second, I've had Versed and it doesn't induce complete amnesia, just a twilight state. Some you don't remember completely, some you do. For me, it compressed 20 minutes into what seemed 5.

Third, if it's a human rights violation, then a taser would be actual torture.

I think the OP needs a chill pill (or maybe an injection of Versed:D).

I've also had Versed.....when I got a vasectomy....I remember everything about it. It actually seem to have very little effect on me.

Re: This will make you mad...

The amnesia effect may have something to do with the dosage, but there's no doubt that the drug does cause amnesia. In the article, it says that 80% of people who the drug is use on experience amnesia. The article also quotes someone in law enforcement and medical ethics who says: "The drug has an amnesia effect, and we use that therapeutically because one of the nice ways to take care of the discomfort is to make people forget that they've had it."

Re: This will make you mad...

I thinkk the use of a narcotic to settle a deranged person would probaly be better than the tazer. but on the other hand the perp is restarained
to be givin the shot ,they say the paras make the call .And if so
are they the ones giving the injection ,i doubt it ,face it i wouldnt want any of the police i know to administer anything to me , and haveing done my time with that would not want to have to give injections ,to the people i restained.
pepper gas ,and a 40 cal will do just fine ,if you are human enough to understand the threat situation and use only what is needed to control a
problamatic person ,

Re: This will make you mad...

I think it is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I also doubt very much that any police officer is administering the drug. The bit about the EMT makes more sense but, even then, I would think they would have to get physician approval because they are neither an MD/DO or a Pharmacist. There could be all sorts of situations where a prisoners medical situation, or intake of other prescribed medicines, would prohibit ingestion of Versed. Shoving pills down the throat of a patient who may not be able to describe his medical condition and/or medicine intake, could very easily result in a bad situation.
