Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey HVAC, thanks for the mount info too. I got enough wood to finish my V6 mounts and with the info you gave me and this web site (http://wwwarchive.mercurymarine.com/installation_drawings2 ) I found I have every thing I need to install them. This site has installation drawings for all Merc. engines.
Take Care.
Bob

Hey Bob, That is a great site:) They should add those drawings to the adults only page in the Mercruiser section.

Hello Folks,
HVAC,
I really liked that site too, I thought it could be a big help too a lot of folks too.
jeepdoc,
Welcome to iboats and thanks for the kind words.
I left my boat on the trailer but it has bunks, I'm not sure I would want to tear it down just sitting on rollers, the support is to limited.
OK, My progress report.
As most of you know here in central KY, They were calling for storms all weekend here and if you watched the derby today you know we got them. Last time I looked at the rain gage it was getting close to 3" today and still raining. :(
When I got home last night I decided to do what I could to at least get something done. I got set up and started pouring foam. I didn't want to cut holes in my deck so here's what i did.

,
Same pic just a different angle.
IMG00316.jpg
,
I have a little trimming to do but it came out pretty good. Really solid too.
Then then the sky started leaking. Had to quit.
I can't believe that Murphy went anywhere but here either. I decided that since I couldn't work outside I would start tearing my transom assemble apart. I couldn't get my hing pins to budge and managed to break my hinge pin tool. Now I can't do anything more until I get a new tool. Then I will try adding a little heat or maybe take it to a marine shop before I cost myself even more money.
Well that's about the it for today.
I hope the rest of you have had a better day then me.
Take care
Bob

He bob, looks good! Sorry to hear about the rain...it sprinkled for about 2 minutes here, then dry and overcast the rest of the day. So what was the method for the foam pour?

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey arch,
Thanks, It was really pretty simple. I just covered a cover board with plastic and mixed the foam poured and stood on it to keep it in place across the stringers, let it cure and removed the board. Then repeated the process until completed. Any voids I just mixed up a small batch (a cup or less) to fill in.
I will trim away any excess around the stringers to expose the tops of the stringers for the PL when I get ready to put the deck down permanently. I will also seal any area I cut too.

Bob,
I have been reading around on this forum for a while, nice job with the boat,
we have the exact same boat, i have a 1988 glasstream 182 caravelle aswell, different color options, but same thing.

I havent seen too many 182 caravelles in here, but its nice to see another one!

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey Bob, Looking good. Sorry about the rain. I've spent the last couple of hours catching up. I'd love to be as far as you are now. Not making any progress on my end.

I like the foam idea. seems less intrusive and no holes in the deck. I love the gauges too. Mine have the same backlighting. (if I ever get to put them in)

Keep chugging along I'll be watching:cool:

Hello folks,
Thanks for all the comments,
Not anymore updates on the boat, it was still raining when i departed today. I did snap this pic before I left today. We only got 6-7 inches of rain. :(
IMG00318.jpg

I have a small spring filled creek in the middle of that, About 6-8 feet under. :(
FFDAVE, Thanks for looking in on my thread. Glad to hear you have one like mine. I hope you don't have all the rot I did. Are you going to start a thread?
well , good luck
Mountain Man,
Glad to hear from you, stay in touch.
SnowHunter,
Yep, I got a little done. Only half the foam..
I hope that the rest of the folks involved in this storm are all safe. I know a lot of them got hit harder then me. My house sets pretty high so, I feel pretty safe in it.
Have a great night
Bob

Hey Bob,
Sorry to hear Murphy was staying with you this weekend. With the hinge pin tool I used a 1/2" allen key, it fit and worked perfectly might want to give it a shot before going to a marine shop. The foam looks good, are you going to give it a coat of resin after the trim to re-seal?

HVAC,
I plan to seal it with either paint or resin.
I'llhave to try the allen wrench trick too. I can't seem to find my tourch either, go figure. I put it somewhere safe again.

My wife told me that it looks like the rain is almost over for a couple days.
If it keeps going, I'll be able to just push off the trailer and go floating around.

Boatflipper,
Pretty wide spread flooding around here. I'm not sure if they have canceled schools or not.
Glad to hear you and your family are at least safe.
Thanks

Looks like this was the weekend for transom assemblies, Vert was doing the same thing too, with his though not sure if the tool or the pin stripped.
I didn't even buy the tool , I was about to here on iBoats and read the review for the Sierra it was all bad. I did a search and found others used a allen, went to sears and got it for $10.00 I did get lucky with my pins, whomever did it last time didn't use loctite :D. FYI I also read I think Don S. posted it that he don't re-locktite them

With the foam, I used epoxy on mine, with the Sea Gem I am going to do the same under my bait wells where the foam is exposed its dry but for 6oz of resin its good insurance

Real sorry to hear about all the rain, its raining here now too. If it keeps going like it is by you where going to have to change your name to Noah

You have a P.M.
