Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

OK folks,

Be careful what you ask for.
I have another problem.
I was looking for a donor boat on craigslist for the 4.3 V6 engine.
Well this is what followed me home Friday.

It's a 1988 177 Thunder Craft 4.3L V6 on a Tennessee trailer.

The boats not in that bad of shape. The transom is gone and I'm sure all the wood is rotting below deck but I still hate to cut her up. I had the engine running today and it sounded pretty good. I only paid $500 for everything. 40 minutes from my house.
Any thoughts???
The wife was not that impressed with the new addition. :p:redface:
Take care all

NIIIIICCCCCEEEEE Bob!!! Just take the engine out and put it in yours. That should put the wife somewhat at ease:D

Great work so far Bob. Time to recruit some helpers to flip her over:)

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey Mick,
That was the plan for the motor but I still have a good four banger too and another outdrive.
??????
Glad to see you enjoying yours too.
It may take some doing to get people to help with the flip. I have worked away from home so much I haven't stayed in touch with all my friends but I will figure it out.
Thanks for dropping in Mick.
Take care.

Nice find on the donor boat. You can always sell the four banger and outdrive and recoup some funds. The deck on your boat looks great. You do nice work for sure.

Good progress Bob!,

I'd think you can come out well ahead on the deal. Sell your outdrive, sell the new extra trailer, and see if you can get a little money for the hull, or just put it up for free on craigslist. If not, say it goes with the trailer, and let whoever buys that deal with it.

Good luck,
Terry

Hey Bob, your work looks great, even if it's taking you a while. A little progress is better than none! Nice find on the boat, I wonder if someone would buy it as a fixer upper if you include the motor and outdrive? I bet you could easily get your money back....and maybe make a little.

You gotta love that Craigslist. Wifes always seem to have a problem understanding the value of fine Watercraft but not fine Furniture.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey Folks
Thanks for all the great words.
I have a couple weeks to think about it before I get back home.
The next time I get home I'm going to do a compression check on the engine and make sure it's OK before I pull the engine out of the new boat.
I'm also going to coat the deck and then flip this thing. I really need to get the hull ready.
Thanks again all, I really do appreciate it.

Nice score on the donor boat. A deal is a deal. You can part it out, restore it, resell and make some money.

Either way I'm sure you will make money on the deal.

I'm trying to limit some spending. I've got some VC performance epoxy and primer left over that I may use to painting my trailer with. That's my way of coming up with a deal :)

Thanks again for the kind words.
Vegas,
I've been following your thread and I don't blame you for spending a much time as possible on the lake.
sprintst,
I'm pretty sure I will come out ahead on this deal too.
Thanks
Triton II,
Thanks for stopping by.
I'm pretty sure the motor is fine, I just want to give it a good check up.
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello all,
Well, I wasn't scheduled to make the trip home this weekend but I ended up going anyway.
I went home to work on other things but managed to get a little time on the boat.
I decided to go ahead and flip it, instead of gel-coating the deck.

Here it is back on the trailer and under cover.

The next time, when I flip it back over I will use two trees and leave my little tractor out of it. We almost had a disaster. I almost flipped the tractor instead of the boat. Had it on two wheels. I will get me another come along to use on the tractor end and put the anchor chains higher, It got stuck half way around.
I had more pic's but they got lost in all the confusion.
I also managed to get the donor boat running really good. I have a short video but not sure about posting it.
Next time I'm home I will crib it up and get it off the trailer.
Anyways, hope you all had a great weekend.
Take Care

Good work Bob, im at about the same stage in my rebuild. Im planning on using a utility pole and an engine hoist...

Do you plan to repaint or gel coat?

Ive been thinking about going the same rout with the 4.3, im not sure if that would be a good idea in my cast with just a 17'...

Good work and good luck!!!!
