Re: Timing Question on Vortec 4.3 V6 Engine
Which still doesn't tell us if it's a Thunderbolt IV or Thunderbolt V!!!
The old serial number would tell us a lot more than just the ignition type. We'd know what generation the engine was, Gen I, Gen II, Gen +, for starters.
Are you using the old drive and transom plates? If so, post the serial numbers of those. At least we may be able to get in the ball-park!!!
.
I can go in the boat's engine compartment and take a peek. What do you want me to look at? I can look at the SN on the new Vortec which probably won't tell you anything since I took the computers and everything out of it. It came out of a Blazer. So, basically, my question here is again on the timing cover, the notch on the plastic thing without number markers for timing for the ignition, would be what?
By the way, the boat runs great and is very fast. I was able to rev it close to 5,000 RPM (with a 21 pitch prop, just went up to a 23 to keep the revs down a bit on WOT), and then I retarded the ignition a bit and only got about 4200 RPM out of it.
I would just like to set the timing where it needs to be. I burnt my first set of spark plugs possibly due to wrong timing on the ignition. So, it's just a simple thing. Would like to get the timing adjusted where it needs to be and not monkey around with it too much.
