The old engine of the boat is probably in Japan by now becoming a Honda, so not able to get serial no. Not sure if this engine that I removed was orig. or not.

The old engine SN probably won't help you any other than to figure out what ignition system it has (?)

I know it's a pointless distributor electronic ignition. The cap is on with four screws.

Which still doesn't tell us if it's a Thunderbolt IV or Thunderbolt V!!!

The old serial number would tell us a lot more than just the ignition type. We'd know what generation the engine was, Gen I, Gen II, Gen +, for starters.

Are you using the old drive and transom plates? If so, post the serial numbers of those. At least we may be able to get in the ball-park!!!

Can you take and post a picture of the distributor and any modules that may be attached to the outside of the distributor?
The distributor itself is the same rather it's a IV or V. It's the additional modules and knock sensor (sometimes) that makes the difference.

I can go in the boat's engine compartment and take a peek. What do you want me to look at? I can look at the SN on the new Vortec which probably won't tell you anything since I took the computers and everything out of it. It came out of a Blazer. So, basically, my question here is again on the timing cover, the notch on the plastic thing without number markers for timing for the ignition, would be what?

By the way, the boat runs great and is very fast. I was able to rev it close to 5,000 RPM (with a 21 pitch prop, just went up to a 23 to keep the revs down a bit on WOT), and then I retarded the ignition a bit and only got about 4200 RPM out of it.

I would just like to set the timing where it needs to be. I burnt my first set of spark plugs possibly due to wrong timing on the ignition. So, it's just a simple thing. Would like to get the timing adjusted where it needs to be and not monkey around with it too much.

I will and BTW no knock sensors on the motor. All removed. I'll take a picture of the timing cover, distributor and the module, and we'll take it from there. I appreciate it.

Maybe, maybe not... Different ignition systems have different characteristics. You could be using the wrong heat range plugs because YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT SYSTEM YOU ACTUALLY HAVE!!!

It's a simple thing IF we knew which ignition system we were fiddling with. Without a reference to TB-IV or V, or generation of the engine block, as they all ran different cams, we can't give you an accurate answer.

You seem to be intent on ignoring/avoiding giving us something to help you, so I'm gone....

Awwww, you're packing up your expansive engine knowledge and running away? Boo hoo.

Have patience with my bf! I have to! He will get back to ya. Thanks again to all the not so emotional responses...
