Thanks for the ideas guys. Anyone think some heat would help the bending process?

Yeah the vinyl rub rail was wasted, someone must have drug up 10 miles of crab pot lines over it, it was cut, sliced and diced into garbage. The inner small rub rail was drilled full of holes and sliced up too.

If you can't find a good solution to repairing that dent. Try looking for free fiberglass boats on craiglist. Believe me there is no shortage of garbage boats out there. Just make sure the length of the hull is equal to yours. The rub rail channel from the other boat could be a good replacement option.

You could also cut the damaged part off of the rail and have the two ends tig welded back together. The bow and stern caps should cover the difference in length.

Nah, I would stay away from heat...unless you are experienced with heating aluminum, it can end up causing more problems...

I actually like this idea allot. Same for the fiberglass boat scavenging route too.

I happen to have a 19' glass rot bucket sitting around. Hmmm... The Vinyl on it isn't in the nasty shape my Chiefs was and the channel looks wrong to make a complete swap over. Ya ya I have a case of MBS.

It would be nice if SC would have designed it's rub rails like my SN, they are very thick aluminum with no vinyl and add to the structure of the hull.

Okay so the cost and difficulty of finding the new SC rub rail vinyl, sounds like everyone is unhappy when it comes time to get some new material. No sure fire way to get your hands on it if I'm seeing it correctly?

I like the idea Gus has for getting some of the wow out of the rail channel, and he put some serious effort into the illustration! I just hope it doesn't break. If so then I will be on to cutting the bad section out, welding and grinding. :grumpy:

Thanks JB, I saw that replacement stuff but it's not exactly the right dimension outside the channel. Although if push comes to shove, I bet that Taco flavored rub rail would fit the bill, maybe seal the deal with a mega tube of 5200 under it just in case.

The inside rub rail I was able to salvage the portion inside the cuddy but the rest of it is garbage. I may just replace the inner rail channel with regular angle aluminum and do away with the rub rail expense and hassle. Who the heck needs rub rail inside the boat?

Not much going on here, got the last of the paint on the topside stripped. Started wire wheeling the transom skin and decided to drill out the dozen or so rivet holding the transom bracket on. Something didn't look right with it, there was some gunk in the seam so I decided to take it off. You can see what I found on the bracket and the skin when I pulled them apart.

Here is what was hiding between the bracket and the skin. A 1/4" layer of crud and corrosion. Not sure how it was so packed in there, there wasn't any room and it was tight with no loose rivets.

The pic of the transom skin didn't turn out showing it very well like the bracket. Just something for those of us to remember when doing tear downs on these old boats, leave no stone unturned!

^^^ great advice!

I've become a big fan of the naylox wheels for removing that crap...great at removing corrosion while being somewhat selective to aluminum...doesn't tear-up rivets like a SS wheel does.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Got some must do work done today on the donor boat. Fired her up and fogged the crap out of it twice until it wanted to die while smoking out the exhaust. Drained the lower unit gear oil out, NO water intrusion! Happy happy happy as Phil would say... :D

First time winterizing a 4.3 MC so I hope I got everything opened up that has water in it. When the motor cooled enough, I pulled all 4 drain petcocks all the way out, (2 manifold, 2 block) lower water pump hose, hose from starboard manifold, hose from cooler under port manifold. Amazing how much water stays inside even after pulling out the 4 petcocks. When I pulled the hoses water poured out.

Also the port manifold petcock had a bunch of flakey crud backed up behind it when I pulled it out it coated my hand with flakes of what looked like rusted out metal. Problem somewhere in the cooling system or normal for a 1987 motor?

Those of you who do the winterizing every year chime in and let me know if I missed anything on my 4.3 please. I do not want a cracked block / manifold next spring. I'm hoping my hose pulling is a bit of over kill. I plan on replacing all of the hoses and belts before the re-install in the Chief, maybe even the water pump too.

Oh and I just got a rebate on my purchase price after pumping out 28 gallons of nice fresh gas from the donors belly tank, well over $100 worth of gas I put in my suburban. The guy told me he filled her up with no ethanol premium before he decided to sell.

Found the classic problem too of someone double decking to cover up the rotten original deck, no wonder the thing towed like a cement truck. Waterlogged and double decked, I also found a 2 x 10 and 2 x 4's that were put in. I swear, people do some dumb stuff throwing good money over bad rotten garbage.

Still trying to get the hull clean in the Chief but that 40+ year old grease is clinging to the aluminum like nothing I've seen. 3 dousing of Super clean and 2700 psi pressure washer just to make a dent in it.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Not a bunch done lately, weather has been horrible, from running AC to heat pump in a few days time. I did get the Chief off the trailer and flipped upside down so I can finish getting the paint stripped. The pressure washer blew most of the loose house paint off the bottom. Was going to strip but weather turned bad again. Alll of the aluminum pieces are now moved inside the garage for my winter time tin fix. Lots to do there on the cabin, windshields and trim work.

I figure it will be best anyway to leave the hull upside down for the winter snows so as to not get the build up of snow and ice inside. Man I hate thinking about the long cold days of winter.

Yeah - Winter isn't fun when you have things you want to do.

When you drained the donor, did you probe the block drains. Sometimes rusty mung clogs the drains and all the water doesn't come out. I don't remember if Jason had that in his link. ^^^ I'm sure he did, but don't want any bad words from E. Washington to singe my ears. :)
